- Affectionately called the “Warthog” for its aggressive look and often painted with teeth on the nose cone, the A-10 Thunderbolt II is the U.S. Air Force’s primary low-altitude close air support aircraft. The A-10 is perhaps best known for its fearsome GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gatling gun mounted on the nose. The GAU-8 is designed to fire armor-piercing depleted uranium and high explosive incendiary rounds.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II has excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude, and is a highly accurate and survivable weapons-delivery platform. The aircraft can loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time and operate in low ceiling and visibility conditions. - Věda a technologie

@@deaganwarheit4686 The GAU-8 is a hydraulically driven Gatling-style autocannon. Gatling doesn't mean hand powered, most of if not all modern day rotary action autocannons are referred to as Gatling guns except for smaller caliber ones like the M134 Minigun and the GAU-19.

Why would this plane be deemed ugly. Thing looks badass to me

They're revamping the look, now. The concepts look pretty cool
I live near an Air Force base and the real scary thing about the A10s is that you didn’t even hear these warthogs coming until they were overhead not like the f15s which you can hear them coming miles away. So if ur the enemy if you can hear the a10 it’s way too late.
Vegas ?
You are correct. If you are hearing the gun fire, you are not the planned target. The A-10 thunderbolt is the sky beast.
Yep. I grew up a few miles from Pope AFB (now Pope Field). Know exactly what you mean. Anytime they flew over my school during recess all the boys would immediately stop what they were doing and stare up into the sky until it was gone. A buddy of mine was hit in his head by a kickball because he looked up when he heard the A10. My neighbor's son-in-law was an A10 pilot and he'd occasionally fly over to say "hi".
I don't care what it cost to maintain this plane, it's needed especially in this out of control world.
Thing is, the A-10 Thunderbolt is stupidly cheap (and easy) to maintain. They were designed to be so cost effective so that even a tiny little airfield can land one of these things, repair it, and send it on its way again in a matter of hours. By comparison, the F35 the Air Force wanted to replace the A-10 with are several magnitudes more expensive and to maintain, and they can't even take half of the beating an A-10 can.
Sadly Brandon is sending them to Ukraine as a gift
If you’re solider pinned down by enemy fire, A-10 is like an angel that comes from the sky:)
What a wild rush that must be for anyone in that situation! 😮😮😮

This aircraft still has a place, it is easily the best close air support aircraft to ever exist .
Any aircraft with a pilot flying in it, that flies this close to its targets in a modern battlefield, is going to get those pilots killed. Drones, stealth aircraft, missiles, and guided bombs may not always be the cheapest option, but they’re the most survivable
Anything it can do the F-35 can do better

*when your machine gun produces more thrust than your jet engine*

@@scruffyboi5897
I'm not sure if I've been wooshed, but that wouldn't happen because the bullets would have the velocity of the plane added to their velocity. The A-10 has a top speed of about 196m/s, the muzzle velocity of the GAU-8 Avenger is about 1010m/s. So at top speed the bullets will be travelling at 1206m/s relative to the ground, which would give each round about 43% more kinetic energy.

The A-10 is the finest ground attack platform ever fielded. Superbly designed, engineered, produced and flown by the world's best.
@Bobby Brady That is absolutely false. It was designed to survive in a very hostile SAM/AAA environment. It's main job was to fly multiple daily sorties over Soviet tactical airspace. In Iraq, it flew in dense AAA areas and excelled...became legendary. So where does your deduction come from? It sounds like an opinion based on guesses, or personal taste...not an data or factual analysis. The fact is...other than stealth, one simply cannot build a more survivable CAS platform...within reason.
Second best,.
Jonathan Phillips After what?
Bobby Brady You are seriously misinformed if that's your "opinion".
It has done exactly what you claim it wasn't designed for.
It is in fact a highly survivable aircraft in virtually any environment. It's only real Achilles heal, if you can broadly call it that, it that it's not particularly fast. If comparing it to the Russian Frogfoot, which is Mach 1+ capable, that is the Hawg only real vulnerability. This has however, in actual combat, not proven to be the case on a regular basis.
What, pray-tell, is your alternative for a cost effective and robust CAS platform?
If you say the F35 Lightening... I'll slap your stupid face off your head.

My son was stationed at Davis-Monthan in Tucson, Arizona, which is home to the A-10. In the shop where he helped to maintain these brutes, I got to see the Gattling gun removed from the plane. The gun was as long as a 1962 Cadillac and the rounds that it launched were just stunningly huge. A VERY impressive piece of genius !! Keep this plane in our inventory. NOTHING can replace it ! The Army, Navy and Marines may give the Air Force some good natured shit, as all branches do to each other, but when you and your brothers are pinned down in some God forsaken area of Afghanistan and here comes a pair of Warthogs, well,......God bless the United States Air Force !!!!!!!
Yea…I was stationed at Moody AFB, GA which also has A-10’s. Those rounds are throwing 16oz of metal at the targets. Why those holes are so big! Awesome plane! Hope the AF keeps it in inventory. Cheers

I can only Imagine as I am a Gunney Sgt. An you're a Marine protecting his Troops
Well done Marine
That's physics for ya
I just love this plane, it’s toughness, weapons and overall it’s just intimidating! When our guys are in a bad situation, this plane shows up like the badass big brother in the sky and the enemy knows it’s in big trouble! There’s been talk for a while about retiring it, that it’s CAS role is done better by other aircraft like the Bone, F-16, F-22 and others. That may be true, I’ve never served and I only know what I’ve watched and read. But there’s no denying that this platform does it’s job in style, takes a beating and keeps on hitting. I hope that they keep it as long as it’s able to keep our guys safe, instead of putting in the heap just because something newer and cooler needs to get some of the glory. This plane has inspired so many, that imagine swooping in and raining hellfire on the bad guys, so our soldiers can do their job. Love this plane.

So, a funny story about the hawg. In the 80s, I was a 45B in the US Army. Basically, an Army gunsmith. When I was stationed in Italy, we would sometimes have to go to Aviano Air Force Base to fix something if they didn't have anyone that could. One time, me and the other small arms repairman got asked to go out because a flight of A-10s was coming in and one had a bad Avenger. The thought process being - you work on the 25mm Bushmaster chain gun, you can work on the 30mm Avenger. They are two totally different beasts using two totally different principles. So, the first thing we do is grab the technical manual. In the US military, if you can read at a 6th grade level, you can fix anything if you have the manual. Go through the procedure of removing the cowlings, getting a hydraulic lift cart for the assembly to rest on, and removing the restraints. No sooner do we remove the last restraint and the whole aircraft goes nose-up until its resting on its now crushed vertical stabilizers. No one informed us there was a totally separate bulletin on preparing the aircraft to have the Avenger removed. The majority of the aircraft's forward weight is in the Avenger. It balances the rearward weight of the engines. We were apparently supposed to put a special support under the tail section to keep it from doing exactly what it did. Oops.
I was never in the Air Force but we have a base not too far from our house. Every once in a while I would hear the distinctive sound of the engines as it flew nearby and we would all run out to watch it. Behind our house is a rather large swamp and they would practice maneuvers over the swamp land. Like I said, none of the other jets sounded anything like it so it was great to hear them and watch the tight turns they could pull with it. Great video!
I was stationed at Hurlburt Fld., FL when the A10 was being tested. Because of my clearance, I was aware of most of the newer aircraft that were being tested on the range, but when the A10 started shooting the mini-gun I thought I was being buzzed by bumblebees. What a kick-butt plane!

If I was stuck on the ground, under fire, I could not imagine better air-support than an A-10
An interesting fact that I just found out about the A-10 is that it only tops out at 704 km/h (at least the Warthog) which isn’t even close to mach 1, and it only has a range of 400 km before it goes out of fuel. If you compare that too at JAS39 Griffin, it’s really bad stats. The Griffin tops out at 2150 km/h which is over mach 2 and has a range of 1500-3000 km. Still tho, you can’t really compare these to planes, since the A-10 is a turret with wings, but it’s still interesting

Everyone else at the air show was looking at the super fighters and I saw this sitting alone on the tarmac, so I got a good, long look at it. After hearing it in the air on videos, my heart was gone. I had just passed a Vulcan system on a palette when I eyed the big bore of the GAU-8 the A-10 had. Yowza, that's purty.
