- Hi everyone!
Hope you are all making sure you are getting into the fish room and just enjoying your fishy friends đ
This video is about dither fish and target fish that are very suited to Rams. This obviously doesnât include all the amazing varieties of fish out there that are suitable but it does include the ones that I particularly find effective at alleviating aggressive behaviour.
Hope you all enjoy the video and please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you havenât done so already.
Cheers!

This was great!! Awesome recommendations!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked themđđ
Ditherfish is such a cute name for them âš great video as always!
Thanks Em! Glad you liked the video and the name for them đ
I enjoy all your content.đđ»
I app reactive that so so much! Thank you đ
Hi Justin. I am planning to get some rams, could not decide which ones to get as they are all beautiful so I was doing some research to keep different ones together. Really liked the video. Clear, right to the topic, very helpfull and informatic. I wish you could ship to the UK. Those are some very beautiful rams! Good luck with your business!
Great! You have a lot of tough deciding ahead of you if you are anything like me! I just settled for as many as I could haha. Thank you so much for your feedback and glad that you find the videos helpful. All the best and looking forward to seeing comments detailing your successes in the future!!!
Great video. Hope to get some rams soon. Just sold some guppies to free up a 25 gallon. Love the videos, keep it up!!
Awesome! So happy your getting into themđ€Ș
Hi Justin. Awesome video as always. My choice of dither fish was pencil fish. My target fish are Sterbai Coryâs. Both species seem to do well in the higher temperatures that rams prefer. I definitely like the idea of cardinal tetras, so next tank will probably have these. Lost a subdominant GBR male this weekđ©đ„
Oh, Iâm so sorry to hear that, my friend. I know how this feels and Iâm sure you will soon be enjoying the company of another stunning GBR. Those are all great higher temperature fish choices. The cardinals should fit right in to your selection perfectly fine đ
Great video! Another great target fish in my opinion is otocinclus! My male GBR always chases them away. He does no harm, but doesnât want them in his space!
Couldn't agree more with that type of fish too. I also keep ottos and I love them!
Great selection Justin!!!
Here are my Dither fish with my GBR's...
I keep Pencil Fish with the GBR and Checkerboard Cyclids...
I also have Rummynose and Green Tetras with my Electric Blue Rams
I also have Panda Cory's...
and White Cloud Minnows
As a companion I have Sparkling Gourami's...
Thank you! Pencil fish are great but I have never actually kept them. I must do that one dayđđ
Those are all awesome choice and your tank community must look so amazing!!!
Thanks for that, my friend đ
Personally i use neon tetra, peaceful and generally stay up higher in the tank. great video and ideas for dither fish.
Thank you, Bobby đđŒ
Incredible work, Justin! Awesome video! Go demons! Haha. đ
Hahaha thanks Laz! Hope you, your family and you fish are all doing great đ
@@JustinsFishRoom yes they are doing fantastic! What âbout you, and the fish and the family? Exams probably easing next week, eh?
Thatâs great đ Yeah, all is great my side! Exam shave all finished just have been given two assignments to do over my breakđ đą
I think zebra danios make great dither fish. And 1 thing to note if you have ever tried black Mollyâs as a dither ,I have found them quite aggressive, I added 1 as a dither in my neolamprilogus multifasciatus shelldweller tank, and it decided to actually take on 1 of my pairs, no damages but this molly stands his ground! Great topic and I enjoyed it very muchđđđ»
Thanks for the heads up, my friendđ I will definitely keep that in mind for future choice selectionsđ
What about a single bristlenose pleco? I saw a video from "The Dave". And he successfully uses a single one as a dither/chase fish! Thanks for the vids!
Nice video
Love some of the dither fish you suggested, now just to find them.
Thanks, Gavin! Let me know what you end up selectingđ
@@JustinsFishRoom love the sound of the Killi fish the clowns look great,
Also like the panda Cory option
The tetras are easier to find than the killi though so they might be my go to
Sounds good! Cardinals are a great compliment to German blue rams in a natural looking tankđ
yep i have found a reasonable size group of rams is working well for me at this point
Definitely looks amazing having so many rams together too:)
I use threadfin rainbows for dither fish đ
Your fish community must look so stunning. I am very jealous!!!đ€©
Cheers i like rams alot too
Thatâs awesome! They are the best hands down đ

When you realize African tiger fish are part of the order of characiformes:
Clown killis are great addition to lots of tanks!
they are jumpers so not an option for me in my open top tanks
I couldnât agree more!!!
Fair enough - covered tanks are a must for them for sure đ
Hey! Very informative video thank you!
Is it possible to have different kind of rams together? Like a German blue ram and an electric blue ram or red head, or should they be all the same? Thanks again :)
Thank you! Great question - the answer is definitely!! If you are not concerned with breeding then this is perfectly fine đ
@@JustinsFishRoom thanks a lot for your reply! Really Appreciate it :)
Great video Justin. Have you seen dither fish help with the Rams not eating their eggs? Ive been having that problem with my BR pair. There going on their 10th spawn and have eaten all but one spawn which i pulled out.
Yes! I wish I had mentioned this in the video. But this is what the target fish are mostly for. Rams need an outlet when something goes wrong or if they have eggs. So, I have definitely found it stops them from eating their spawns especially when other rams are around
@@JustinsFishRoom I'll definitely be giving that a shot then. Thanks Justin. Keep up the great work! Loving the content.
I separated my male and female gold rams for 2 weeks when I put them back together 2 days ago I also added 3 Praecox rainbows that I had grown out. The pair of gold long finned rams spawned last night. Anything I can do to keep them from eating eggs. This is their 3rd spawn. Aggressive male is all calm. Thanks for help!!!
I would just keep an eye on them. Make sure they have a lot of plant cover so that they feel safe and that the eggs are hidden. If a pair of rams feels like their spawn in threatened by predation, they will eat their own spawn to conserve the energy and start again. So make sure there is plants galore in your aquarium:)
Do you ever see hydra in you tank? What do you do about them?
Just added a golden ram into my tank w other tetras and a killifish. Killifish seems to be harassing the small golden ram. Any suggestions
Justin, what do you think about Discus fish?! I'm starting to get an itch!! đ
One thingâŠDO IT! Iâm not just saying that because Iâm a discus addict but they are honestly such an amazing fish to keep and breed. They are up there with rams for me and I can never go past the wild types like the heckles đ€©
Did rose ever take you back after jack hit it ?
I use schools of cherry barbs, neon tetras, black phantom tetras, and 5 banded barbs to disperse the rams' aggression
Great selection! I am particularly fond of black phantom tetras but have never actually kept them before.
The ram has always been my fav fish but have always been told 2 or 3 to a tank due to aggression was so amazed when seen you tank full of them . How do you manage it and how many would you keep in a 20 gallon and a 4 foot tank?
Hi there! My rule of thumb is usually a breeding pair to every 60 litres đđ But this also depends on how much cover there is - the more plants, rocks and driftwood the better đ
@@JustinsFishRoom thanks for the reply I have my first 2 blue midnight ( blue knight rams ) coming in 20 days can't wait
Thatâs awesome!!!
I have a 20 gallon long with driftwood and many plants. Many places say to only have one pair in the tank. Do you think two pairs would be too much or do you think the two pairs would have enough space to have different areas for each other?
You could do two pairs if there is enough cover. It also depends on the individual fish themselves. Some Rams are just inherently more aggressive than others. I would get one pair to start with and see what their temperament is like. If they are very peaceful then you can try another pair. I would also suggest to keep a spare tank on standby if you can so that you can seperate the pairs if need beđđ
If you put say celestial black ram pair in with a established pair of gbrâs,have you seen them cross breed?
No, the pairs are quite strongly bonded and all my pairs have never parted from their mateđđ
I have german blue male who knows he hardest fish in my tank but still goes round starting on fish in my tank the other night he went down to were my other fish was chilling in coconut started so I took him out the tank put him into breeding box for night let him back into tank next morning seem to be fine then tea last night he started again I don't want to rehome them but if it carry on I will have to has I don't want that to keep happening & lose fish I lost pair ove black Knight ram pair because ove them
I have 2 females and 1 male ram, guarding their spawn like an amazing poly-amorous family. My question is at what point do I pull the fry out? They are about a week free swimming now, still just over 50 fry and this is the adults 5th spawn, so they are finally getting the hang of parenting. This is the first time the free swimmers lasted past the first day or two. I don't want them eaten, but don't want to stress the adults out by taking their babies away either. Help!
Itâs a bit of a give and take situation. My suggestion would be to leave the fry in there. This is because your trio are already showing signs of improved parenting so I wouldnât interfere at all. Let them keep making mistakes until they get there on their own đđ
@@JustinsFishRoom Thank you for your advice! You're awesome! I have learned so much watching your videos. I just had another pair spawn on the filter of a 40g community tank! I'm going to be overrun with ram fry!! đđđ
Thatâs awesome! Iâm so glad you like the videosđ sounds like you are going to be a ram pro soon!!!
Im honestly terrified of adding killifish to any aquarium. I added a pair in my community tank and one of then ended up ripping my tetraâs and bettaâs fins apart. It wasnt even the male that did it, the female was the aggressor. She literally followed my fish to their usual territories and terrorized them. She did all this damage in a single day too, and I sent them both back to the store right away.
Hi there Alex. Thatâs no good mate. You do have to keep in mind that fish do seem to have individual personalities and some species that even usually thought of as peaceful can sometimes act unexpectedlyđ
I always thought corys would eat the eggs. So never thought of them but yes my rams are aggressive to each other. I have them separate now, going to reintroduce the female soon.
Yeah! Itâs a weird one for sure. I have never experienced egg eating from even my large bronze Cories. But I still tend to stick to the smaller more skittish types as they are less clumsy in a ram breeding setup
đđđčđč
How many ram pairs would you put in a heavy planted 40 breeder?
My rule of thumb is one pair to every two feet long.
Bro how do you do it!? I canât keep my rams together. I have to keep each pair in their own 20 long. It looks like you keep so many together. I would love to know how I could keep more than one pair in a 20 long
I would recommend making sure that you introduce everyone at the same time and make sure there is plenty for hiding areas for them. Make sure you add more than just a few pairs. You should be able to do it if you follow these tips. This is what I do anywaysđđ
Recently got 2 Bolivian Rams. Canât tell if they are a âpairâ yet. Added 6 Lemon Tetras. 5 of 6 âgoneâ by morning. Replaced with 5 more. All but one gone again. What the heck is going on? 2 guppies have been fine in the tank even when they were barely bigger than fry. So Iâm scared to add anything again.
Hi there Laura! You are more than welcome to send me a picture of the Bolivians on Aussie Ram Farm Facebook page and I can sex them for you. In terms of the tetras, have you get a secure lid on the aquarium?
@@JustinsFishRoom yes I have a lid. No jumpers that I can find. Iâve found a few of them dead in the tank over time. But not all of them. It was just strange. I will definitely post a pic where you suggested. I can get a good pic of the dominant one who comes out sometimes. The other I rarely see because it gets nudged away whenever it comes out.
I thought panda cories needed lower temperature than rams. No? Like Rams 78 and above, pandas 76 and below?
Hi there! I havenât had any problems with having them in 28°C. Mine actually thrive in the discus tank at even higher temps.
@@JustinsFishRoom great! Then I can use what I've got! Thanks for the input.
My GBR parents raised their young, now the male seems really angered. He is turning dark, and going after the fry. Is this normal? It's been about 2 weeks that they're free swimming.
Hi there! Yes, this is very common. I would use the methods mentioned in the video to help with the aggression:)
@@JustinsFishRoom I did that from the jump. I have cardinals, hillstream loaches and 2 females/1 male GBR. The male is very dark mow (looks like a black ram, but this is new coloration, so looks like anger related). Do I HAVE to separate them from the fry, or will he adjust?
@@survivalofthefishiest I would give them a few chances and they should adjust perfectly fine:)
@@JustinsFishRoom All is well....they may have eaten the newest babies, but the previously parent-raised ones are still doing amazing, and look like mini-GBRs now. Very exciting! Thank you for your advice :)
Do you ship Ram to the us
No, sorry AndrĂš. I only ship Australia wide. I really wish I could though - I have a lot of friends over there who also would love to get some toođđ
If your looking for rams look up imperial tropicals, they're based out of Florida. I got some good looking rams from them that ended up pairing up
