@@14Lenka11 Well he ain't wrong in the sense that this year, because of Covid, no audience members were allowed, the only people at the finish line are other skiers and teams plus officials and slope helpers, medics. The applause that was heard was played from the speakers and as you could hear, someone actually physically pressed the 'stop' button after the crash, I guess in order not to make it disrespectful. While I have no doubt out of those at the finish line everyone gasped and held their breath in shock, we couldn't actually hear their magnitude of 'applause to silence'. It was the artificial/playback applause into the real silence.

Once you realize how dangerous this can be on those steep slopes even for a recreational skier at very low speeds and then you see those daredevil riding such slopes designed to push the limits, with their speed well over 100km.h on an icy, uneven surface, fighting with high G-forces, then you realize how much nuts this kind of sport is.. Each fall on the Streif slope can mean the end of the skiers carrier and disability for the rest of their life..

To me downhill skiers are the toughest sportsatlethes in the whole world. Yes, they try to make this sport safer at any chance, but when ever an accident occurs the reality is that your body has to take the force of stopping from 90kmh- 145kmh within seconds. Broken bones, career ending injurys and even death are always a part of it.

All skiers wear airbags. they have an three layers of fences in each spot. the piste is in perfect condition, they have always an helicopter at the spot to bring them as fast as possible in the next hospital and so on... You should watch this competition 30 years age where they only had like one wood fence in each curve.
