    It's often difficult to even get the feel that the fans were considered in modern cinema that having the lead actor say it out loud got us a little choked up.

    USA does have 5th gen fighters and more of them than anyone else in the form of the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. You actually see F-35s on the carrier in the opening scene before they move to Maverick's Test Pilot scene. There was a throw away line somewhere about why they couldn't use F-35s for this particular mission (and F-22s are Air Force, not Navy). So for this mission, the F/A-18E (single seater) and F/A-18F (two seater) were at a disadvantage compared to the enemy Su-57s (5th gens).

You could interpret that to mean the INS/GPS guided weapons wouldn't be accurate enough to hit that tiny target in that environment, leaving only laser guided weapons as an option. Thanks to it's stealth capabilities, the SAM systems can't track it well enough to get a good lock, so it'd fly at cruise height, drop a laser guided bomb and get out of there. The 3 reasons why the F-35 wasn't chosen for maverick are:
      1. The F-35C is very new (entering service in 2019) and the US navy doesn't have much of them, unlike the super hornets
      2. The F-35C has a lot of classified features, and you don't want Hollywood actors to access (or even worse, leak to the public) classified military information.

    One of the most moving moments to me is where Ice tells Maverick to let things go. I know it's an action movie, but that line and that moment was touching and what a classy and great way to send a message like that.
    Past that, it checks all the right boxes and was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had watching a movie. It's more a victory lap, and a outstanding one, than a sequel. Then too, although most of what they are doing isn't based in reality, but that doesn't get in the way and it's still entertaining.

    The fact that the "enemy" had old American made F-14's means that if it took place in the real world it would have to have been Iran - the only country other than the US to own them. This would also make sense given the "nuclear enrichment" plot point. The only thing that doesn't currently make sense is that the only Gen-5 fighters (other than those of the US) are being developed by Russia and China. The funny thing is the iconography of uniforms and planes of "the enemy" seem more like a North Korea thing.
    In reality, the "enemy" is really an amalgamation of all foreign adversaries of the US.

    Rooster was “shot down” at the beginning of the training because he was covering his wingman. His flaw is being too conservative, but his virtue is putting the team ahead of himself. Maverick shot down the enemy jet, it wasn’t crossfire. The US has 2 5th generation fighters, the F-22 and the F-35. The Navy doesn’t use the F-22, and it and the F-35 is only single seat, so they wouldn’t be able to film an actor in them. F/A-18s are 4th gen, but they have a 2-seat variant that was used in the film with a real navy fighter pilot upfront flying the plane and the actor in back filming. They used “GPS jamming” as their reason not to use the F-35. Probably irrelevant in real life, but they covered it in the film. The enemy planes were CGI, but based on the real Sukhoi SU-57 which is capable of all the maneuvers shown in the film, including the crazy one.

    I said this in a comment on the last video, but I can say with all honesty that Maverick is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. Period. It's probably the only movie I've seen in theaters and decided before it was over that I was going to buy it on DVD as soon as possible.
    EDIT: I'm pretty sure Mav actually shot that first one down, because the bullets drew a line across the engines, and Mav and Rooster were more off to the side than directly behind.
    EDIT 2: Oz, even though the US spends more money than the next 8 on the list combined, most of it is wasted. Our military spends more money on diversity than effective equipment and tactics. F-18s are standard issue, because it's cheaper and easier to have the programmable drones than pilots and fighter jets. So it's not unbelievable that the enemy has better equipment, because even though the US spends more money, other countries are way better at allocating funds.

    The romance in this movie isn't a perfect representation of traditional values, but I loved its effort. It demonstrated several times that Maverick and Penny want to build a relationship and not simply show a love scene. Most movies today would just show as much skin to try and make a stamy scene, but this movie went to lengths to show that Maverick needs to be there for Penny and that he needs to return home to her.
    It definitely adds to the themes of fatherhood and traditional masculininity by demonstrating a deep love for a family rather than a shallow sex one-off.

    My dad is a fighter pilot, he flew f 18s (the planes in this movie) for many years, and now he flies A 4 Skyhawks (the little planes from the old topgun movie). He now trains the Air Force in dogfighting. He absolutely loved this movie, and said that many of the combat scenes were plausible/ realistic. He always had nit picks of course, like the f 18 doing cobra maneuvers, the way they dodged radar missiles, and the bomb targeting pods being outdated. Also, the Su 57 felons should have absolutely owned maverick in the f 14, but it was still an epic dogfight. One thing I've learned from him and from studying air combat, both BVR (beyond visual range) and dogfights, is that it is just as nuianced and just as much of a test of skill and physical strength as a sword fight.

      In long range even mid range combat the SU-57 would kill the F-14, in close range combat, things get more iffy. In this arena even an old WW2 Spitfire can shoot down an F-22 or SU-57. there are just too many variables. And in this case, the range was so close where the SU-57 gave away all of its advantages and Maverick took advantage of it.

      @@linusa2996 I'm assuming you pulled the spitfire thing from GS. The f 22 can beat the spit if using thrust vectoring. I mean, have you been to an airshow with an F 22? That's only the capabilities the military wants to show us. And in a dogfight, no the F 14 would not win except maybe 1 in a hundred scenarios, like the one in top gun. People keep arguing that the F 14 is just as good in a dogfight. But in reality the SU would drastically outturn the f 14. The scene in the movie is cool, but no the f 14 couldn't reverse the Su 57 that easily. But the power of editing and film making makes it appear that way XD.

      @@linusa2996 When missiles are in the picture... all they have to do in a real dogfight is thrust vector behind a 4th gen fighter, and fire Fox 2s. It'd be over in a few turns. One in a hundred would an F 14 win in a dogfight against an SU 57. The Tomcat is designed for extreme BVR engagements, so it stands a chance doing that.

      @@braedynhoward3644 If the stealth of the SU-57 is 1/2 of what the Russians claim it to be, the F-14 needs to be within 25 miles to even engage the SU-57, thus, close range is better for the F-14 as in this realm, the advantages can be negated. Oh TV means you lose energy, this gives the F-14 driver an opening to get above the SU and keep the energy advantage and get a kill.

    As an American
    just saying that fighter generations are hard to grasp for the layman. But earlier in the movie it is said that the f35 wouldn’t work because of the radar jamming set up around the target. The f18 super hornet is in fact not a 5th gen fighter it’s still 4th gen. The difference is staggering between generations. So much so that you don’t want to fly when 5th gen fighters are in the air.

    • @richardvernon317

      The F-35 can only be stealthy if it carries its weapon in the internal weapon bays. The bomb required to do the job is a 2000lb bunker buster. F-35 can carry the GPS guided version of this in the weapons bay, but the target has GPS jammers around it that will stop the bombs from picking up the GPS signals they need to work. The only other option is the 2000lb Laser Guided Bomb which needs a target designator (preferably with somebody to guide the bomb on to the target).

    Claudia makes a great point at around 8:00 : they used the original movie but they were clever about it. Spoiler: at first I was thinking Goose's son hated Maverick because of his father's death, but they introduced the fact that Maverick sabotaged his career (because of fear of him ending up just like Goose). And that allows for the conflict to be resolved in a satisfying way.
    Compare it to Obi Wan, for example, where Reva hates Obi Wan... I'm afraid it will be as simple and vague as: 'you failed us'.

      @Fordo007 Před 2 lety

      Because so much of modern storytelling is lecturing 'people' and 'groups' so failings are always a group or organization or people. Obi-Wan should feel bad because of what the Jedi did... not what he personally ever did. Vs here where it's something one person did to another person that that one person can feel bad about because they did it and the other person can feel angry because they did it. But modern writers can't lecture audiences with that type of storytelling...

    When it comes to the technological edge...
    It's a bit weird
    The F22 was so advanced, they actually scaled back the tech level for the F35 (ish. It's a really weird thing to talk about) so that everyone else wouldn't try as hard to catch up
    And of course they stopped ordering F22s because they're so expensive and the F35 was flashy
    So the idea that someone else could somehow catch up isn't impossible

    • @joesmutz9287
      @joesmutz9287 Před 2 lety +1

    Wow! Oz is actually correct on something! Yes, one of the most basic things thought in army is to asses lines of fire, be aware of what is behind your target and other things to avoid blue-on-blue incidents. On the ground they seldom still happen, but in the sky that is basically empty that would be really embarrassing.

    41:40 Absolutely agree. The whole American military shtick is to be technologically superior than anyone else. Some nation might figure out a gadget or piece of software but other than that, Murica wants to maintain technological supremacy. The last time they were up against a technologically superior enemy was WW2 but Germany couldn't outmatch them in weapons production.

    In the film, the American side has 5th gen planes. BUT they say that they can NOT use them due to radar issues regarding the mission. That is why they didn't use them. And I appreciate that you think we Americans always have the technological edge. But we only recently upgraded our small arms. A lot of times, we spend a ton of money on R&D and it goes nowhere. Or we regress. So our "edge" tends to fluctuate depending on what part of our military you are talking about.

    We watched the original together, then went and saw Maverick together, and my son loved it even more.
