Bathurst, the first major centre west of the Blue Mountains, is located 670 m above sea-level and 205 km west of Sydney via the Great Western Highway.
Very historic town. I got chills watching this with you. It was sad that we lost our Holden Manufacturing...so no more Holden's... I love watching it each year. There are quite a few online 'reactors' who watch it live in the US lol. It's a great day for fans of motor racing and the crowds are huge. When the race is over it returns to a lovely drive for 'normal' drivers lol. I've seen the occasional 'kangaroo' get onto the track but luckily they can jump over fences lol. It's on 5th to 8th October 2023 Not only is this the first year the new Gen3 era of Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro will race around Mount Panorama, it is also the 60th anniversary of the Repco Bathurst 1000 - promising to be an historic occasion!

The driver Moffat a 4 time champ . Not bad for a Canadian kid far from home ! My first club number was 888 and sent a picture to Lowndes . Got a reply from him ! As for SVG as soon as I knew he was racing Chicago I knew the race was his !! So much to see in this series !! Enjoy !

When converted to 1,000 klms ( about 600 miles), they changed the rules...... now every car needed 2 drivers, but NO navigators. lol
Last solo race was won by Allan Moffat, but he suffered for it.
Wrestling the heavy Falcon for 500 miles had stripped the skin off his hands and fingers.

The Bathurst 1000 is I guess Australia's Daytona 500. It's 1000 Kms (or about 700 Miles give or take) and 161 laps of pure motor racing across Mount Panorama. It's a race circuit located at Bathurst which is around 200 odd Kms west of Sydney. It use to be the battle between the 2 local car manufactures Ford and Holden but Holden have shut up shop and Ford have stopped producing the V8 falcon so now it will be Ford Mustang Vs Chev Camaro.

Mark Larkham, a former Formula Ford champion, and familiar with every inch of Bathurst as a race driver and former team owner does an incredible video about Bathurst, basically explaining how to drive every corner, and every straight of the track. Nothing like someone who has raced the track to understand what it is like. Then for a good laugh, watch Darrel Waltrip taken for a hot lap of Bathurst. He gives a great American perspective.
Also check out the Bathurst 12 Hour. Personally I prefer the 12 Hour, even though the 1000 is more popular. I recommend the last laps from 2015 in which Bentley, Aston Martin, Audi, and Nissan battle bumper to bumper for the win. Because the mountain is so difficult, it levels teams, so that after 12 hours of racing it is still anyone's guess who will win.

Since 1993 the teams chose between 2 Australian made rear wheel drive sedans; Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore.
But since the cessation of the Australian automotive manufacturing in 2017, the race cars are now Mustangs and Camaros.

    @Rassskle Před rokem +1

We could say that Peter Brock was Australia’s Richard Petty..... or Petty was almost the USA’s Peter Brock........ but there is a fly in the ointment !!!
From about 1969 to late 1970’s Holden and Ford were locked in battle for sales, and winning Bathurst made you the King of Sales.
Both teams had a few top drivers until Ford signed Allan Moffat........ a self taught Canadian who got the car racing bug as a high school student in Melbourne, Australia.
Allans business man father was against car racing and basically cut him off completely..... Allan was on his own with no money and probably no functioning family.
Anyway...... he travelled while teaching himself to drive, often selling pots and pans door to door to eat, and to go racing.
Moffat was the real deal but NO factory team in Europe would hire him, he had no pedigree, and had embarrassed Europe’s best in a stock standard Cortina GT with no money, no race mechanic and no sponsors...... he even embarrassed the best in V8 Ford Sprints, when the factory Cortina GT’s could not even compete against the V8’s.
Moffat changed the game in Australia with pure driving talent...... and then Holden found Peter Brock to match him.
Colin Bond was probably as good as Brock, but apart from being top class in a racing sedan, Bond was a world class rally driver.......circuit racing is not rallying...... especially once they started using slicks.
Slicks are faster than treaded tyres, but hopeless sideways.
As a rally driver, Bond loved to race as sideways as possible..... hence Brock was a little quicker......on bitumen but not on dirt or gravel. lol
Anyway.........after his first race in the USA against the best American and European drivers, Moffat was hailed as the second best driver ever after Richard Petty by all the American experts.
Moffat took a drive in a privateers car, a Cologne Capri 3000...... a one off drive in a car he had never driven on a track he had never seen before.
Like his early days in the Cortinas, he smashed the Factory Capri drivers and split the factory turbo BMW ‘s on a “ turbo “ track...... he didn’t get pole but qualified 2nd .
First lap he lost at least 3 seconds on the banked oval...... he had never raced on an oval before......when he braked for the oval as a corner, about 5 cars went passes him.....lol
By lap 5 he was back in 2nd place and pushing the No 1 BMW.......
Moffat came 2nd, but the winning BMW superstar driver admitted he had to go way past the red line to stay in front...... lucky not to blow the engine.
If Moffat had not have braked for the oval section, he would have got pole position by over a second and won the race in a slower privately entered car........ Brock could never do that and neither could Petty, but Moffat did it at least twice and was always quicker than his cars.

    Hey Jeff,
Mt Panorama Bathurst Circuit destroys ANY Driver that under estimates the difficulty. Many European, English and American drivers have tried and only had basic results. Some complete fail.
I know that if you look into it you will see how this race and the Circuit evolved. Originally called The Armstrong 500 (miles) after a Shock Absorber manufacturer. The moved to Mt Panorama Circuit and named the Hardy Ferrodo 500/1000 after a Brake Pad manufacturer (Ferrodo) as made by James Hardy Industries.
Early races were brutal on the Cars that simply were not developed to last the Race distance. Examples of Diff and Transmission swaps mid race, as well as Rotors and Pad changes for the brakes.
Today the Race average speed is just over 100 MPH per lap with top speeds approach 180 MPH (300 km/hr) down Conrod Straight.
As you see more you will get to know the Circuit.
Only recently both Ford and Holden GM have pulled out and changed their V8 offerings to the Australian market, so the US Camaro and Mustang now make up the Cars and Teams.
Enjoy you journey. We are proud we have this unique history story to tell.

Add to that the road really is pretty narrow and people actually have homes on the mountain. It is effectively a semi-rural street.

A Ford Falcon GTHO originally built in 1971/72 specifically for this race, at a time when the local Australian car manufacturers lived by the mantra "Win the race on Sunday. Sell cars on the Monday"
It is actually a historical race that was a Bathurst support event that took place in 2008, I believe.
For a guy like me who actually owned one of these Fords as a street car in the early 70's it is electrifying to watch. The shaker air scoop and hearing those sounds again. I would never have believed at the time that such a significant vehicle and phase of my life in my early twenties would be something I would be watching approximatedly 50 years later as a "historical event" it still feels so fresh and so current to me even now. Wow! I remember doubling that clutch and washing the speed off coming down some damned windy mountainous roads in the Queensland Gold Coast Hinterland. Just out on a pre breakfast drive from nearby Brisbane. OMG, so much fun!
You also get an extremely good 'through the windscreen' view of the Bathurst/Mt Panorama track, 3 laps starting from the back of the grid and working through a lot of traffic.
Well worth the watch and I'd love to see your reaction to it.
