Alexander the Great invaded the Persian (Achaemenid Empire) in 334 BCE. He defeated the Persians at the battle of the Granicus River. Then he fought his way to the city of Gordion, the capital of the ancient Phrygia. Then he reached the town of Issus in Turkey where he met a huge army led by Darius III, the emperor or Great King, of the Persian empire. Though outnumbered, the Greek forces inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Persians. The Great King fled in his chariot while his family was captured by the Greeks. Alexander then proceeded to capture Tyre and Gaza while Cyprus and Egypt surrendered. Alexander then entered Egypt and took its ancient capital Memphis. He was crowned as the Pharaoh of Egypt. Then he visited the Oracle of Ammon in the Siwa oasis of Egypt and got more predictions about his future conquests. Thus Alexander annexed nearly half of the Achaemenid Empire.
