- In this episode at the modern image 00 gauge layout New Junction, We take a trip up north to visit the Modern image O gauge show, during the show I noticed one layout stage a deliberate derailment as a mid day show stopper.
Back on the 'O' gauge layout Apethorn Junction, I was blown away by the creativity to replicate a derailment scene and provide adequate time for the operators to go and have a lunch break together.

10 / 10, there was a driver in the cab, so often you just get painted out windows or Ghost Trains. So good you bothered to put train crews in place.
Absolutely incredible. The effort to build and operate is incredible. Thank you for the video from the United States, coolest thing I have seen in a long time.
Wow that’s amazing! What great skill he demonstrated hooking up the chains! Love the smoky diesel exhaust .
Glad you enjoyed it! You can make one for the garage!
I was most impressed by the class 20 exhaust ! Most realistic i've personally ever seen.
That was very cool, yes. I guess, being O-gauge, there's room for a fan in there to blow the smoke out, instead of just letting it waft.
This whole idea is so simple, and so common on prototype railroads. I wish train shows in the States would start doing this! Thanks for the video!!
Just awesome. The smoke coming out of the engine and sound of the Diesel engine of the rescue crane was superb. The gentleman has a great skill God Bless him
Oh man, if someone sold these i would totally buy one

New Junction a set up like this would have to cost $10k at least wouldn’t it ?
New Junction including countless hours of labor, maybe more.
Seen this amazing crane a few times over the years ..its stunning model and engineering .... amazeing to watch in person at the shows....jim
The challenge is to replicate this at OO level, finally I was well impressed with the clag that was being correctly pulsed out of the class 20s in timing with its engine, good job it was not a cold start up! Well done to Richard and 'his film crew' for this one.
Challenge enough in 'O' 🤭
They was so cool, the amount to technology in that crane was amazing. Great job on the building of that and then the operations. Thanks for sharing. Ken
Glad you enjoyed it Ken!
That is amazing. I am building a 1950's version of this type of crane for my layout set in the North East. It is the one that was based at Gateshead Greenfields depot. Quality modelling
Nice, sounds like a fun project
What a fabulous layout incredibly realistic 👍🏻
Absolutely amazing demonstration! I love the flashing light effects as well!
Impressive to see actual working buffers and chains for coupling. Then that breakdown train was incredible.
Fantastic. With the dramatic music, that could be a Channel 5 documentary! And I love those smoking class 20s whistling away.
One day I'll achieve BBC documentary status 😆
"Fantastic. With the dramatic music, that could be a Channel 5 documentary!" YYEESS
Old men playing with toys, I love it.
That was incredible! Thanks for spotting and posting.
Your welcome!
That was absolutely great to watch
Absolutely brilliant... amazing track work too
That's awesome, excellent to see the step-by-step film as well, thank you
Your welcome!
Superb richard, just incredible to see the crane motorised, thanks for the video.
Your welcome Alex
Derailed by the hand of god!
lol
That crane is way cool. I'd definitely buy one. Thanks for sharing sir.
Your very welcome!
What an amazing layout. The sounds from the models was so realistic too. Thanks Richard..very enjoyable as always.
Thanks Tim!
Fantastic what a crane
Very nicely done crane! Thanks for showing it to us!
Stunning setup 👍
Well, all I can say is, awsome. Absolutely brilliant, great modelling 😎👍
Your dead right Mark!
Another cool video of this layout and the crane rescue.
Thanks Anthony!
I like how he uses the little hook pole to attach the chains as if he wasn’t involved
Absolute amazing peice of model railway equipment
Loved this video with the class 20.
So much detail that builders put in to these its amazing. Its like our big world crammed into a little plastic one ❤
As the saying goes
VERY INTERESTING
Oh yes!
Gentlemen, truly an inspiring piece of modeling, very well done.
Muse
Thanks David!
WoW! Amazing video I absolutely love trains and have my own N-scale train line. And you are its biggest inspirer thank you!.
Wow that's great to hear, keep up the good work!
So cool! Thanks for sharing!
Your very welcome!
That was real neat. Thank you for sharing
Your welcome!

Thanks Al
Wow that is sensational!
An excellent video. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. ♡ T.E.N.
Fabulous !!!!
That is actually the coolest shit ever.
Absolutely Brilliant!!!!!
Stunning to behold
That must be a huge layout, especially to tour at shows! Looks awesome. Iain
Yes it filled a school hall lol
Oh wow.. I like how the smoke comes outa the engine towards the end !
Oh.. and the working crane is Awesome too !
Very clever nice bit of modelling
Superb!
wow that was fascinating, great to see
Great stuff
Thanks for sharing buddy
That’s one Great layout- nice seeing a class 20 chuffing smoke 💨- nice touch
Certainly gets the juices flowing 😁👍
Garry
Cheers Garry, always glad to get your juices flowing! 😅
_Two_ class 20s chuffing smoke! 😀
Great video that is certainly something you don't see on a layout at a show
Yes, It had to have it's own video
Great stuff thanks
Your welcome
Great video! 👍
Thanks
Oh my goodness Richard you’ve gotta have one of those in the collection mate!! 😎 John E
Ha I need Dave the operator to make me one 🤭
Great video mate really impressed with that
Cheers pal
Brilliant !!!!
Cheers Michael
I call “the derail train” the breakdown train
SodorChinaClay I still do.. some times
Ditto
New Junction ?
Where are the Thomas boys at?
I think it’s “rerail train“
This is a much more complex track-layout than existed at the real "Apethorn Junction" which was a few miles from where I live, and which once afforded a rail link between the now-defunct "Woodhead" Manchester-Sheffield main line and routes to Stockport and Liverpool that have also largely disappeared from the British railway network.
Wow, another great video with awesome work.
A big thank you for this wonderful sharing.
Of course I do not minimize the work of modelers, but almost everyone has done but they forget your editing work.
Thanks!
OMG !!!!!! This is just Amazing !!!!
Ha yes Andrew!
Awesome video!
Thanks John!
Wow fantastic I'm trying to do this on a 3.5 inch gauge rail crane and finding it difficult couldn't imagine doing it on a scale so small
It's a real art form!
@@NewJunction its space even with a big model like mine you fast run out of space you get a idea it doesn't fit I'm using scaleart equipment they seem to be the best so far we shall see I've some holiday coming up so I hope to get it finished
That's pretty awesome!! Worth having an o gauge layout just for that! Maybe something under the board could derail the train instead of reaching across to do it by hand too ☺
I couldn't afford a derailment haha
@@NewJunction very cool.
If you choose to automate the derailment, it probably makes sense to put the mechanism into the car that derails. For example, you could put a remote control pager vibrator motor inside the car and literally shake the car off of the tracks at the chosen time. Or a hobby servo that moves a lever arm underneath the car that pushes down on the ground, thus lifting the car up.
That was amazing :)
Oh yes!
Very nice....!
Very impressive layout and working crane and the footage is great too. I already saw this on Cottesmore's channel (with you in the background!) but it's well worth watching end to end again. With advances in 1/72 - 1/76 scale RC machines I think it's just a matter of time until we see something similar in OO - NOT from me I hasten to add! ;-)
@Cottesmore 😆
wonderful video, Greetings from France.
Awesome 👌 🆒️ video 📹.
Awesome.
Indeed Ron
Very good
Brilliant
That class 20 with the smoke looks the part
He should have invented a bunch of little people to do the removal and repositioning instead of using that little hook
Paul Mountney lol
I reckon he could even do that!
He should have just come to the USA, we just use wooden blocks to rerail cars.
@@donsgotmoney They do here, just about everything you see here is wrong, ramps and perhaps jacks would be all that is needed.
Paul Gallon we do stuff like this tho
In the uk so that’s a load of me ass
awesome
Awesome
Cheers
Nice 😎
Very good ;)
Thanks
It's good to see the breakdown cranes in action. Great video.
Thanks Jack!
SUPERB
Thanks
Dave I'm sure Dave EJ & Richard DP will enjoy it. Nice one
I'm not Dave haha
@@NewJunction I'm sorry Richard for the error.
@@NewJunction @francis47 It's Dave DP and Richard EJ too :-)
I’d never leave, I’d have to sleep there and keep an eye on the town lol.
Impressive stuff indeed. A lot of effort, just to get a pie and a pint in peace.🍺🥞
Yeah but sometimes the pie is worth it
That is absolutely fantastic.. I would love to see a video on how the inner workings work and or the building of this lovely crane... Does such a video exist?
Not to my knowledge
Now, that's cool right there, I don't care WHO you are!
It was amazing!
that is so very clever what a great video
Thanks Pal
@@NewJunction makes me wish i did not sell my crane
Awesome video , I had a crane bought from overseas . Last month I lost it completely to fire ....
That's a shame Raj, ateast your okay!
Yup bro , thanks a lot : D
Cmon bro!
You should have played the breakdown theme from thomas and friends in one of the first episodes!
True story!
Very interesting indeed i personally like the maintenance dep aspect and am incorporating a lot of it in my layout in the future ... I wish it could be done in oo but I think that would be a challenge due to space in smaller gauge cranes certainly out of my personal ability but maybe someone will have a go
Always worth having a go
Hi Richard, that was a very interesting video, certainly something different. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg!
ice layout, i prefer the HO scale but i live in italy ;-) the OO is not so common here, but really great layout
OO only exists in the UK, as far as I can see. It's because our railways are smaller than most other countries' and, in the old days, nobody could make a reliable motor small enough to fit in an HO-scale British steam locomotive. OO is about 10% bigger, so an OO-scale British steam locomotive is about the same size as an HO-scale European locomotive and then the motor fits.
Having said that, this layout is O, not OO. HO is "half-O", so O is twice as big as HO.
5:45 up up and away
Liftoff!
absolutely amazing !! ...however this isn't a first for o gauge ..there is a few about pluss there is a steam crain with working flywheels motion ect ..its amazing watching these working models picking up items of rolling stock ect
Cool, I'll keep.an eye out for it!
No big deal I have like 20 of these 😉
👍
Haha
What derailments?
Pretty much
Lovely O scale layout without the third rail and over sized wheel flanges.
Amazing. Thanks for a brilliant video Richard. Are you coming to the Manchester show? PS> I bet you've not finished the station roof yet have you.
I'm hoping to
It would've been smashing if it was made for Lionel sets. But still smashing on the rails
Grate
I'd have preferred this without the epic music, as the visuals were epic enough on their own and the music masks some of the model sound. But still a great video -- really enjoyed it!
