  • Good information on house sparrows. www.sialis.org/hosp.htm
"Without question the most deplorable event in the history of American ornithology was the introduction of the English Sparrow." -W.L. Dawson, The Birds of Ohio, 1903
This video shows the removal (by hunting) of English (House) Sparrows from a feeder for the purpose of creating a friendlier environment for native song birds. This method equals instant death for the birds in question - much better than poisoning or netting.
This was one of 4 trips I made to this location. By the end of the fourth trip, the English sparrow numbers were reduced significantly enough so that they no longer "swarmed" the feeder. Native song birds returned in healthy numbers. I estimated I shot around 200 in total (over the 4 days). I also tore sparrow nests out of the trees and barns. I hit 'em like a ton of bricks. And the result was that there were song birds all over that bird feeder at the end of day 4. (the video was filmed on day 3). I moved around this location, shooting at 3 or 4 "hot spots". This spot was just the easiest to film.
    Equipment details:
The Camera Mount I used to record through the scope can be found here:
    www.amazon.com/dp/B0069VXY7K/...
The slow-motion camera I use to film the shots through the scope is the Casio EX-FC150. That camera is no longer made, but you can buy its successor (which is actually a better camera than the one I use) here:
    www.amazon.com/dp/B004H3X1EI/...
The Exact same Hawke Scope that I use in this video (Sidewinder TAC 30 6.5-20x) can be found here:
    www.amazon.com/dp/B00413KACA/...
Gun - Edgun Matador .22 PCP air rifle
    Scope - Hawke Sidewinder 30 6.5-20x (video at 10x)
    Pellets - JSB 18.1g shooting at 920 fps (34 ft/lbs energy)
[It goes without saying that] All birds were legally shot, and all are exotic species. I can't say this enough - if you have a problem with hunting do NOT watch this video. Friends can comment without approval. All others will be screened.
For those who do enjoy hunting...um....enjoy. :)
European house sparrows are an out-right plague on some farms. If left unchecked, their numbers swell out of control. They eat a lot of the livestock feed. But, what is worse is that they defecate in that feed. In this way, they can spread crippling disease very quickly to the animals.
Furthermore, these birds are quite aggressive and disrupt the nesting of tree cavity-nesting birds, such as Purple Martin, Eastern Bluebird, Carolina wren, and a variety of woodpeckers.
We not only shoot sparrows and starlings, we remove their nests and habitat (brush) as much as possible. Some folks think it doesn't make a difference. I can tell you that they are not trying hard enough. If you make life tough on these birds, they will find alternative areas to congregate.
Do a Google search on "House Sparrow" and you will find much information about the damage they cause. One thing I'm sure of is that if these birds were ugly like a rat, fewer people would be so quick to chastise me for blasting them.

You are really correct, sparrows are dumb, this is from 2+ years experience in having house sparrows they took 2 years (from baby) to know the house window path to nest but now they only know how to get in to the house through different windows but they only go out through the main door and windows near the main door. They don't have intelligence to go back from the other windows they came from.

The problem with invasive species is that they cause the loss of native birds in their natural environment. Depending on things like size, aggressiveness, and dependence on the same food source the bigger more aggressive non native drive out the native birds and can cause loss of the native birds. An example is the more aggressive European starling drives tree cavity nesting native birds like tree sparrow, blue bird and red headed woodpecker out of their nest and take them over.

I have to do this routine around my scratch pile. We have roadrunner sometimes. I had this young one that was curious that liked to hang out on my porch rail. We have the tall ones and standard size roadrunners. I feed them mice I kill. One liked going into my firepit to dig for things. I've been nailing things on the 18" Talon in .25 I made out of the pistol I bought 10 years ago. Sometimes it hits so hard on those Seneca 43gr, that the hit cuts the small varmint in half. Wicked hits. Short or long.

dkchen In the winter they would seek shelter under roof overhangs in the cities where poor insulation let out heat. As new insulation standards increased in an effort to reduce energy expenditures fewer of the sparrows survived the winter and populations dropped dramatically in the cities. They are still common in rural areas.

I bought a benji 392 .22 and have done some small target practice over a month or two to see how dialed my shooting was. Yesterday, I noticed house sparrows harassing the wren house I set up and they were chasing the wrens off. I found a good downward angle (from the bathroom window). The male HOSP had a mid air tiff with the wren and chased her off and landed back on the front of the house. I didn't hesitate, pulled the trigger, and the bird didn't know what hit him. I was just happy my first shot was incredibly clean. I might've enjoyed it more than I care to admit....

If its legal, than nothing anyone can say. Maybe they would send a DNR officer over to make sure you weren't shooting anything illegal. If you are in a city, check and see if air guns are banned first (they are usually not considered firearms), then see if there is an ordinance against killing/hunting animals, if its legal to shoot and legal to take game, there's nothing your neighbors can say.. and really you shouldn't try to explain it. If they are curious, then maybe explain what you are killing and why, if they are pissed off then best to call the police and have them explain to the neighbor that its legal and to stop harassing you.

Hi, I'm sure you're the right person to guide me, I want to buy a PCP rifle and I'm looking for the Walther Dominator .22 (I don't know if it comes in .25 or bigger), the Benjamin Marauder .25, Hatsan AT44 or the Air Arms S200, but also I'm looking for rifles in .30 and .35 cal, the Big Bore rifles in cal .357 sounds good for me (Benjamin Bulldog, Evanix Sniper) but I don't know if I can travel overseas with them, all I know about air rifles is because I have been looking your channel and let me tell you it's f** awesome I like your rifle on the current video, of you can help me choosing a good rifle (not for start) I can send to you my own pest control videos in my country. Thanks.

read up on the laws, all that really matters is accuracy, even my $70 crosman 2289 is superb after $100 in mods.. pump though.. .22 call is more then enough unless you want to be buying tins of 50 pellets for $30 ..
the laws here are ridiculous (canada) if your gun fires over 500 feet per second (or over 2.4 foot pounds) it is classed as a firearm!
All the guns you listed I would need a firearms licence to buy, And I wouldn't be able to transport it without a $75 permit, so I'd do your reseach.

      Harley Me
Wait...are you serious? Airguns are "firearms" in Canada? I have this one - ordered through the mail with no permits, paperwork:
      www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Hatsan_135_QE_Vortex_Air_Rifle/3976#7594
You're saying in Canada this would be a firearm? Wow...I knew Canada was a bit stricter on average than the US, but dude...I live in California, which has some of the worst gun laws in the country, and no one here thinks my air rifle needs any licensing or permits.
I'm not saying that Canada needs to change its laws regarding REAL firearms - that's your country's business - but dang...air rifles are, well, AIR RIFLES, not firearms. You got to tell your lawmakers to loosen up a bit. LOL

      www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/air_gun-arme_air-eng.htm
"These are air guns with both a high muzzle velocity (greater than 152.4 metres or 500 feet per second) and a high muzzle energy (greater than 5.7 joules or 4.2 foot-pounds). The "muzzle velocity" is the speed of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, normally expressed in metres per second or feet per second. The "muzzle energy" is the energy of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, expressed in joules or foot-pounds. Air guns need to meet both standards to be classified as firearms for purposes of the Firearms Act."
So, yeah. It has to fulfill both, and I don't know enough about air rifles to say how common that is. Getting a license isn't hard, though. You have to pass an 8-hour course that's typically $100-$150 depending on where you do it (from what I've seen). The actual license for non-restricted firearms (what an air rifle would be) is $60 for a 5 year license. If one hunts or traps for sustenance this fee can be waived.

    Ted, remember, ...
...some of the negatives just may be newbies to your channel. If they manage to take in a few more of the vids, especially those dealing with pest control, they'll see that your background in the area of native fauna is extensive and valid, and that any harvest is made for quite justifiable reasons. Negative commenters should also remember that growing up and living in rural or farming areas is quite different than growing up in a city's interior. Vastly different approach to, and repercussions from, excessive numbers of a pest species, than a city dweller could perhaps truly 'get'.
I've never seen hunting vids where the narrator had not only such a deep background of research and hands-on experience with these particular species, but were as enjoyably presented as well.
    Keep it up, Ted.
