Goshawk on Pheasants over a Pointer and Spaniel.

- Another morning on a local farm hunting Pheasants with a Goshawk. The dogs worked a hedgerow and ditch down towards a wood. After a short hunt, Lush went on point and Fig the Spaniel flushed a Pheasant. Rhaegar was slipped and he struck the Pheasant just out of camera shot. Keith made his way in and after fitting the tail guard, Rhaegar was given time to plume his kill, before trading the Pheasant for his normal food. We moved on to a game crop full of Pheasants and after two further flights, Lush went back on point. A Pheasant flushed directly in front of us and climbed swiftly upwards. Rhaegar was right on it's tail, caught up quickly and struck the Pheasant within 30m. It's the best flight I have ever witnessed and Keith was delighted.

I'm a shotgun hunter, enjoy watching hunting vids, but watching your hunts with a hawk is like none other. Great hunt right there!

You ve got a lovely set up there mate. Falknersheil. Personally I wouldn't have combined a pointing dog with a flushing dog but it seems to work just brilliant for you

Lush is getting on a bit and struggled to push through the thicker cover along the hedgerow. She worked by herself in the game crop.

It's definitely fun to go hunting with the hawk. I like the bird very much. He comes to visit me very often and hunts my pigeons. Has already flown into the window 3 times. 😅 I even managed to take pictures of it 👍

Aren’t they useful in woodlands with their short wingspan for grey squirrels?
In the wild, Goshawks are very astute at catching grey Squirrels and can form a large proportion of their diet. However falconers would be reluctant to use them for Squirrel control, as they have a nasty bite that could lead to injured tendons, loss of foot or death.

Hi Kenny. I was wondering if I could ask a couple of questions. How often do you take the Goshawk out? Is it a finnish Goshawk?
It is a Finnish cross Albidus male.
Keith trains him just about every day on a lure machine. He’s hunted once or twice a week.
Thanks Kenny. The springer seems to work well as well. Springers are May favorite dog breed and goshawks my favorite bird of pray, so it's good to see they both work together. I see most people just using pointers.
Yes, they work well together, especially in thick cover.
I trialled spaniels many years ago and hold many special memories.

Its definitely more challenging and the success rate of slips drops as the flush is less predictable than with a pointer.
The glove is a Doug Pineo glove that was a gift from a friend

Fantastic to watch such an awesome raptor also sadly ironic that gamekeepers persecute these very birds in order to protect their game birds.
Glad you enjoyed the video, however in my experience, the vast majority of keepers don’t persecute birds of prey and that successful falconry is much easier on keepered ground, where good land management results in higher biodiversity, including larger game numbers.
