- In this video I will be sharing 3x things that I've learned to help me have and uphold my high standards when it comes to making better welds and doing better welding fabrication work. I have been a welder for 17 years plus. And I have not always had or be able to uphold my high standards that I craved down deep inside my soul. I'm excited to be taking you along my journey as I learn things throughout my welding career and how the things I learn through my welding journey also apply to the life I want to live. Today we will be setting the standards for this fuel tank I am going to build.

Thanks Austin, absolutely love the philosophy. I would like to share a philosophical phrase i heard a long time ago, " People soon forget how long something took but will long remember how well you did it."
Oh my goodness… I absolutely love that. Thank you for sharing.
One I heard was either from Bentley or Rolls Royce but it goes like this. “Long after the price is forgotten, the quality remains.”
7 P's = proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance 😂
💯correct.
I always heard it as piss poor preparation premotes piss poor performance lol same idea though
3 P's = perfectionism= procrastination= paralysis...IMHO
Words of an NCO
I love the welding on this channel, but the real value is the life experience and life philosophy that you share with us. Big fan of your channel. Thank you!
Pleasure is all mine. I learn from you all (the viewers) as well. So thank you!
That there is why you are a great teacher, you are humble and modest.
That is a tough mindset to have in today's world where everything is mass produced at a fast pace and pride and craftmaship thrown out the window. Thanks for the good coffee break vidya ✌
I’ve done a lot of large diesel, oil and air tanks and what I’ve learned is feather your stops and starts and weld around the corners in a single pass
Thanks for the advice on proper planning , I seem to take crap from ppl that want to see a job done quickly while I stare at it for a while planning and thinking, in the end it always turns out better for me .
Hi Austin, thank you for taking the time to create and post your videos! I have worked with a lot different people and I cannot tell you how many times I have heard “Come on! Why are you spending so much time on the small details? It’s good enough!” That kind of attitude drives me nuts!! It’s nice to watch your videos and see other people that actually care and understand that you make a name for yourself and picking up your next customer could depend on the product you just put out! I appreciate the pride you take in your work!!
I’ll never forget (at least not anytime soon it was only last year 😅) my mentor from the shop I was at making slot machines, restaurant tables, signs for casinos, etc, he never really necessarily told me a phrase that stuck with me, it was more just the way he taught things, I was a welder before this for 2 years at this point but I learned more from him in 8 months than I did in 2 years of experience elsewhere.
Thank you! 1.5 years into my business and struggling with being overwhelmed due to lack of planning and not expecting the unexpected.
Definitely want to see this get weldingA
Right on Austin. Thanks for sharing this with us . Looking forward to watching the fuel tank build and testing and putting it to work. Fred.
I run into the same problem at work. But when there’s a machine down and it needs welding, I can get the job done correctly in 15 to 40 minutes. Depending on the machine, the users, expectations of my bosses is a lot of pressure. Safe to say, I’ve layed the prettiest, and strongest welds because of higher standards and knowledge of how this piece of equipment that is going to beat, smashed, dipped into 1500 degree aluminum, still holds. I’ve had other guys say “that’ll do, I used to just say okay, hear ya go,”it last at least 4 weeks. Now, the steel melts off. Welds still intact. Pipe still on the steel plate. Feels great.
We’re making bumps for the new machines and with them, my goal is to make my welds look exactly like the ones from the factory. I’ve only made one so far and I swear, if you handed that bump to the manufacturer of the machine he’d take down the design and ask his guys why there making the bumps like this instead of the original. 🤣
I couldn’t help but lol.
God bless the USA
Absolutely great advice! If you are going to have your name on it or associated with it. The job needs to be right. Word of mouth of quality work will keep you in business! Awesome video!
Mr. Ross, I congratulate you on having the courage to make this video. I've watched a number of your videos, and just could not help thinking: this man has great welding skills and experience, BUT too often he is not willing to take just a little more time to do excellent work instead of "just good enough". I guess your wife thought so too. Credit to her for wanting you to excel instead of just "get by", and credit to you for accepting that the remaining steps to excellence are easily within your grasp. I think this video should be shown to all new welding students! I'm looking forward to new videos from you.
Hands down the best video you have thrown down so far A. Ross. Quality, Value, and mindfulness. Thats a powerful combination.
Excellent video here brother. I will ad that most people in the work place will work against these philosophies and make you out to be a threat because you're "making them look bad" or "out working them". Just be prepared for this and smile to yourself and just keep charging ahead anyway. Leave these peoples words and opinions behind you. They will only weigh you down mentally and they have no place among those who have set higher standards for themselves. Harsh but vital for success. Thanks again brother.
Amen, I love what you are saying so many people are fly by the dollar, the "good enough for free" or "get what you pay for" crowd even the skilled labor isnt cheap labor I include in this. If you find yourself saying or thinking this hold up and realize the error lies with you, the work has your name on it do it right, and maybe do a better job on the bid next time. I will also remind people that sometimes you need to take a job to keep the food on the table, so its less than what you feel your worth well what other options do you have now, sometimes you just need to keep money coming in just as long as your not negative on the job its ok. So its $60 an hour in the end instead of $120 or $150. You can charge $200 but if you dont have any work $60 an hour is worth more than $0 in the bank!
I love the way you think. I do the same and it’s so true. It will improve your quality of work if you take pride in it
Thank you for all the help and tips you give out. Very appreciated.. Also for all of us we all have areas to improve everything we do in life great job Austin...
Thanks for the tips 👍 I will try to have high standards to and I will do more planning to on my things
Hi Austin I am in my 3rd year doing pipe welding course I wish I could travel across the world and get experience in the pipeline business I have seen your videos I appreciate every video u post gives me a lot of information to be a better welder just want to say thank you so much welding student from Malta.
I completely understand where you're coming from in terms of how your environment shaped the way you approach projects. At the same time, I think you do fantastic work. I worked in environmental science. Countless government and private sector projects spent time and money collecting data, only to find out that the data quality wasn't good enough to meet project goals or make critical decisions. The government got fed up and put together comprehensive training and instruction documents. It made a huge difference! Folks are always eager to rush in and get started on a new project (myself included), but we learned the importance of planning, patience, and deciding how much data we needed and what the quality needed to be to answer the questions we needed to answer. It was difficult being the person that said the "usual way" of doing things wasn't good enough for a particular project. People get set in their ways and it's an uphill battle.
Your fuel tank is a completely different kind of project, but your philosophy is the same. You decided ahead of time that an ugly tank that just doesn't leak was too low of a standard, so you're deciding what you want and are doing what it takes to achieve it. Good on you!
I sure appreciate this message.
Always strive for perfection it will make a better tradesmen and eventually you will always have a very good product every time . Do it right the first time then there is no come backs to fix a mess or getting a bad reputation
Thanks for putting this video out. The ideas are simple but made my welds become the level they are at. In the beginning there was a bunch of grinding out and redoing until it was where I wanted and now I think more before I begin the build and as much as I can before I get to each step. I love welding and was able to teach people at work how to get it down and some have really took off with it and other haven’t, I relate that largely to the patience. I’ll be sending this video to all of them. Again thanks for this video and all the other you do man, keep your hood down
Pleasure is all ours. Thank you for the feed back. I surely appreciate it.
This is still good advice to me and I'm 75 ! Applies to life, not just welding.
If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.
Very good video and topic. Keep it coming Austin!
You have to look at every weld as if someone's life depends on it.
Yep that's what I was tought years ago
Well said.👍
Austin, it's been a long time since I commented or chatted with you (you where still traveling and doing pipeline when you offered me advice from time to time when I was getting started) but I have watched all your videos and want to let you know I along with many other people appreciate what you do and your advice MORE than you could imagine! And I've adapted the "learn something new everyday" into my daily life. Keep up the good work!
I appreciate you sharing this message. The pleasure is all mine my friend.
Great advice! I too have been a lot like you! Things changed when I went to work for a company that did high quality work and was held to higher standards, since then I naturally hold myself to those standards and my customers notice!
Thank you. Great advise!
I've admired you for awhile now and you inspired me to get moving on doing my own thing. This video helped even more with moving forward and being my own boss! The jobs I get that they tell me to do it my way never fail for them to be in amazement over the work... I always stress that they aren't going to like it lol! I have never thought about the money while working instead think about doing a good job. Keep these videos coming because they help us out here! Thank you for being here for us!
there is always pressure from your boss or customer to do the job faster, but I can't stand working for companies that have low standards for fabrication and welding. personally, I am very satisfied to know that my work looks good, and is very accurate to specifications!
I needed this as I head outside to work on my welding table and various other welding projects. Thanks buddy👍
My pleasure!
Oh man. This one video can teach you so many real truths about life you would gather through lifetime. As a wellder that just started working in business this video really helps
excellent self awareness and advice for any trade
Well spoken AR! As an owner/operator of a small business we're constantly trying to get our staff to buy into everything you touched on in your video!👌💙
I wish all auto mechanics, plumbers, and other tradesmen in the service industry, would take time to watch this video and apply these principles. If they did, there would be more loyal customers that would refer them to others. Great Job Austin! Thank You.
Pleasure is all mine
Wow. This was excellent.
Saludos y te estas convirtiendo en un artesano. paciencia, imaginacion, amor a lo que haces. animo
It’s nice to hear someone else say the things I feel and practice , a lot of times I work alone because my coworkers are in a rush to get finished and do nothing. But when the job is done correctly it look good and works well. And nobody asks hey how long did that take you .
Good video as always.
I work for a local government, but I had a plumber who owned his own outside business tell me once: “When the job is done and I go to collect the check from the person who hired me… IT HAD BETTER BE DONE RIGHT, AND IT BETTER BE CLOSE TO EXCELLENT..”
Word travels fast when you do great work instead of the minimum.
This is very helpful to build a better work ethic as well
We used to use the phrase: “At its core, the saying “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast” emphasizes the importance of accuracy, consistency, and a controlled pace in executing tasks. Contrary to popular belief, the fastest route to success isn't always about rushing headlong into tasks.” Inspirational, keep up your journey.
Hey man love your videos, I am 14 and have been welding for about 3 months and your videos have helped a lot. I have one question in a past video you where fixing a barn that was rusting out and you had a green tiger style welding hood, what brand it is or carry’s it. You make great videos and are a great mentor, hope you read this.
I often tell people
Im upping my standards ,,,,, up yours!
Lol 😆
You know I have welded pressure tanks that had fluid in them, they looked very similar, but had flanges on the side, although it was 7018, no undercut, and no pin holes was very important, watching that puddle and making you standards higher made the welds better and mad it where it was a really good project all together
เป็นกำลังใจให้ครับช่าง🌏🤝🇹🇭🛠️❤️🙏
Great advice! I’ve always been told that it’s human nature to be lazy but I think there’s a bigger picture than that. I’m OCD and want everything perfect, although I can’t always afford it or have time to appropriate to everything being perfect so I have to pick and choose what things to not do at all and which things will get done as perfect as I can possibly do them. Occasionally I do have to throw a patch in a pinch to get by, but typically fret over those until I can get back to them again and do them properly. Always pressure test any fuel tank builds or repairs too. I’ve actually thought about starting my own CZcams channel but haven’t figured out where to start. More of my overthinking everything.
Also take pride on your work.
Thank you for reminding me why I spend soooo much time thinking, it's a bitch striving to keep my standards high. I'm a 5th generation carpenter and more than a "jack" of all trades. But the one rule of thumb that applies no matter what you're striving to do ( an old Boss beat this mantra into my head and heart)
"You're only as good as your last job, kid..... don't ever forget that!!! "
Mark Jorgensen,,, RIP Ol' Man
Speaking of higher standards....i sure do like them videos that are at least 1080p.
Joking aside...My standards, like I've heard you say...is to take pride in your work, and do as good as you can, and not just good enough.
I love the patient part. That’s where I feel like the “welding fabrication shop” I work at. Didn’t think about. We use to be hourly, now we switched to piece work and yes we make more off piece work. But it makes you rush your work and yes we are all making more money then we were hourly But the quality of the fabrication is way down then when it was when we were hourly. Now it’s like “fuck it just leave it”. Compared To how it use to be “that looks like shit, Let fix it”You know
Where's the fr jacket from?!?!
Why not bust out that square wave 200 and TIG weld it?
I thought about it.
The problem is employers want very high production with very high standards I’m not a robot been in the field almost ten yrs but employers still don’t understand if take the time to prep well in their eyes that’s wasting time just weld it.. I could go on an on but I digress because it don’t matter to the employer they just want drones
Proper preparation prevents poor performance
You had me until you mentioned your wife 😂😂😂😂
12 minutes of hold yourself to a higher standard. Save yourself 12 minutes folks
Patience don't cost a penny
it's sad, but you don't have to try too hard to stand out! Slow is fast and fast is slow-LOL
I’m 75, and I worked for my grandpa every summer, and he taught me to get the job done correctly, as quickly as possible, and shut up your cry baby mouth! If you ain’t bleeding you ain’t hurt!
First
Stop, stop, stop, You must 6010 the root pass, cap with 7018. No mig.
nope......didnt enjoy it at all.......
