This is something I think the anime did way better than the manga. In the manga Trunks was a Kaioshin apprentice and basically was the healer on the fight. Here he shows how powerful he can be. He's the first son of Vegeta for Crist sake. He should have as much potential as Gohan.

My headcanon is hybrids can layer rage forms onto their previous transformations and that Trunks used his with super saiyan 2 to get his rage form while Gohan uses his with Ultimate to get beast.
Future trunks actually gained pretty good decent control over his own form later on after fighting black & zamasu repeatedly really, since we saw his white blank eyes fade & gain his iris in view again plus he managed to condense his ki aura around the form too using proper ki control.

The form as of now has only been officially licensed name called “Super Trunks” or Super Saiyan Anger/Rage by Toei, Bandai, And V-jump. But sometimes they just plainly call it super saiyan or super saiyan 2 in the hand full of dragon ball merchandise material or console & mobile games it’s appeared in for some odd reason.
One thing I’ve never understood about rage is how it can rival something like SSR or SSJB evolved, especially when it’s essentially just SSJ2 buffed, but it looks cool ig

The earlier examples could at least be explained by Toriyama's ridiculous obsession with shitting on Vegeta and disappointing the character's fans... but this was the moment they truly jumped the shark and threw power scaling (one of the most critical elements of DB lore) out the window forever. Next stop: Master Roshi being able to successfully compete in the Tournament of Power... 🙄
