First impressions: The Just Essentials sausages look far nicer than the Richmond ones. I used to buy Richmond fresh sausages, but then you did a review of ASDA Farm Stores sausages, which at the time were only 80 pence per pack, and they tasted lovely. Recently, before ASDA introduced the yellow pack Just Essentials range, the Farm Stores ones had been replaced by another cheap ASDA sausage, which was just as good. And now the Just Essentials sausages are pretty much what those Farm Stores ones were.

For a few years now I've bought my pork sausages from the local corner shop. Most of what they sell is pretty bog-stndard, but their sausages are something else. Hand made, so they do vary in size, and wonderfully tasty. I buy the thin link and freeze them in pairs. They last me for weeks!
These cheapo sausages make a great 'binder' for minced meat..to be made into meatballs.just defrost about 4 sausage to a small pkt of minced meat..fry to brown..and add to stews/pasta..etc..😋
YES!! I'm now a member! Love your video's, it's so nice to see a youtuber who'll do comparisons without favouritism, and I genuinely look forward to your videos. Will you start to do merch at some point? A "SPOT ON" hat/ apron would be great! Anyway, great video, thanks for uploading 🙂

It's amazing that the price for both have jumped up with in the last 2 weeks. Richmond at my asda are now £3.20 and the just essentials are now & £1.50. For the last few years my kids have preferred the smartprice/just essentials ones to any other. They cook great in a toad in the hole too.
Hi Gareth. Another great review. In all honesty I never buy frozen supermarkets sausages, they have very little texture. Fresh butchers, for me. However fully understand everyone has preferred tastes, and budgets. That's what makes your reviews so helpful.
Hello, only just discovered your channel and have really enjoyed watching a lot of your previous vlogs. Well done they are so informative , I will definitely subscribe.
Fantastic Bald Foodie Guy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌 Thank you so much for this one, more than anyone . After just telling the husband,he wants to try the asda just essentials sausages. For last ten years I have not been able to switch him or find him something else he likes other than Richmond. So,some point this week we will get these . Cheeers
Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos.Very entertaining. My 7 year old daughter has become a fan and requested we watch a couple videos before bedtime. Currently watching your Frankie & Benny spare rib video before I take her to bed 😁
I’ve got to say the Just Essentials look much better after cooking. Just goes to show the packaging can be misleading and you don’t always have to pay more … thanks for another great review and vlog x
Id rather pick some ugly packaging and save £, knowing that some of these items probably come from the same factory with just a nice logo and packaging design.
Hi just thought I would add a point on here. When you see the weight on a package if you notice sometimes there’s an e next to it. That means estimated so you could actually get a bit more or a bit less. So not always exactly what you think you’re getting
Hi 👋. I've been waiting to see this essential yellow package Saucages. And I am very pleased with essential Saucage looked very Brown in colour and tasty. I've been buying the Richmond sausage for years. And getting very expensive now the price as gone up in farm foods. 5.00 for two bags of Richmond Sausages. Which lm changing to ASDA essential yellow package. Saucages from now on. Thank you very much for your video. Love Maria 💗 xx
I used to get these a few years ago, when they were Smart Price, for 97p. They were a lifesaver as I had very little money at the time. Used to taste fine, and I had them plain with mash and onion gravy, or in casseroles, or Yorkshire. Like you say, there's nothing wrong with them.
Your doing a mighty job of supporting asda and how being on a low budget ..you can certainly eat well and save money!....a BIG HIGH 5 from me..keep the vids coming xx
i buy the richnmond meat free, due to my health condition i cant have meat and there delicious too, tasted like real ones when first tried. lovely in hovis bread butter and tomato sauce. love from cornwall as always
I tend to do sausages in the oven but will be using the air fryer in the future. I was pleasantly surprised with Morrisons own brand though. Great review. Cheers Gareth
With sausages I like to give them a quick fry in a pan to get them brown and then finish 'em off in the oven to make sure they're cooked through (with a foil cover so they don't dry out). It's a bit of a faff but it improves the presentation/taste of even the cheapest bangers. Great review Gareth - I'm definitely off to ASDAs after your recent vids! 👍👍👍
Well I do the "breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, supper like a Pauper" method so my breakfast is biggest meal. I begin with bacon and sausage, cook them slow, leaves a lot of fat / sticky in pan, then add mushrooms which de-glase the pan, cleans it, soaks up some of the salt from the previous, then the pan is clean drop in whisked eggs, turn it, then drop back the sausages, bacon, mushrooms, to warm up. One pan cookining. Wipe clean then ready for next day. The sausages thus are cooked slow and kept warm. You can also defrost to begin microwave to begin to save time+money. In between I do all the other morning things I can shower while mushrooms cooking (they give off a lot of water).
I have to say that I'm not a vegetarian by any means but recently I tried Richmond vegetarian sausages, mainly because they have much fewer calories and I was actually really surprised at how good they were, they tasted really sausagey and meaty ,I'd recommend them .
I know this was a year ago but I just picked up on this. Price has gone up a bit £3 for Richmond and £1.50 for Just Essential but still a massive difference. We've always got a bag of the Just Essential in our freezer - me and my wife call them "school dinner" sausages, cheap and cheerful but nice and tasty. Well worth the money.
I really enjoy sausages beans and mash or chips sausages and egg, I also love the sausages cooked in the air fryer as they are the same colour all the way round can’t beat them and no messy grease splashed all over the cooker
Would love to see you doing some more cooking, nothing fancy just how some of the just essentials range can be used in some simple family recipes and how much it costs ter portion and reducing food waste.
I mentioned to you last week that I manufacture my own high-end sausages out here in the far East but whenever I get back to the UK I am desperate for hotel breakfast sausages which I would happily eat all day long and most of them are either Richmond or Richmond taste-alikes! One of Richmond’s directors used to be a Neighbour and when I asked her what meat they used she would go no further than to say “Pig”!
lol figures as that most minimised turn of phrase has been used extensively from what i recall. Nice to hear that brief avoidance again hehe brings back memories & i should think anyone with the sense should use it today or else risk a gerald ratner!
I've never liked the Richmond sausages, but I recently tried their 'Sausage Patties' and they were quite tasty. Finished them off fairly rapidly and have just got another pack in from Iceland! 😋
Good review Gareth Ty, One thing I could never skimp on is a real sausage, Got to be local butchers best for me! I only eat sausages about once every two months so cost is not prohibitive on this treat, although watching costs I still will make three meals out of a pack of six, freezing some for later.
If I have sausage it has to have a very brown skin, so I do them in a non stick frying pan and that also renders out some of the fat. Have to say that your recent reviews of this budget Asda range is very impressive.
I like how both packs have the legal minimum amount of meat in them. lol I never touch sausages unles they have a minimum of 65% meat in them and no more than 85% as you need the fat for a good sausage.
Hi ya. I was brought up with Richmond but am going to try the essential ones. It looked much nicer when it was cooked. Surprising they both had the same amount of meat content. Have heard it said you shouldn't prick them otherwise the juice runs out and they end up dry. I bet the essential ones make a fab bangers and mash
I couldn't stop my mother pricking sausages. It was a thing before they switched to artificial sausage casing, as the natural casings used to split if you didn't prick the sausages.
@@corringhamdepot4434 yes my mum always did as well and they were always fried. Never done in the oven and she didn't grill them till in her later years. Must admit, I always fry them
We had them with mash and gravy the other week, they were absolutely delicious. Two kids and two adults who all finally agreed on a sausage brand! Definitely give them a go :)
Hi Gareth, this essential line in Asda is great. The sausages looked far better than the Richmond's. It's a pity I don't have an Asda anywhere near me. Thanks for the review mate. 👍
@@yodaslovetoy I am thinking similar, I visited a family member in another town who had a nearby Asda, tried some of their stuff, and now I'm thinking of getting an Asda delivery. Note: I don't drive so it's bike/walk radius for me, Asda is way other side of town, up a hill..... dodgy bike storage. I've been using the nearby Tesco but it's adding 10p a week to every item.
Cheers Gareth great review mate. I use to work for Walls as a sales rep . Four years ago the owners Kerry foods went into administration, Walls , Richmond, Products started being produced by a new company. The products now unfortunately are nowhere near as good . So yes the cheaper version are probably a lot better. Thanks Gareth see you soon. ❤👍❤👍❤
My lad swears by the Asda essential sausages. If you even suggest he spends a bit more on name brand or better supermarket one, he falls off the the spot he’s stood on lol
I've never liked Richmond sausages, taste cheap & nasty to me. I will however give the Asda ones a go though, 6p a sausage? Have to be tried. Keep going Gareth, love your videos.
Hi Gareth, a brilliant review as always, I have to admit the only time i would eat a cheap sausage is in a buttie and apart from that i get the rest from my local butcher, P's red sauce 😊🍻🙏
Going back to our conversation regarding cheeseburgers. I went to Heron Foods today and got a cheeseburger for £1.39. Not a bad price but as i mentioned before adding 3 cheese slices and more ketchup. Handy having a Spoons nearby for the heinz ketchup sachets
I cook my frozen richmonds in the oven, I do love them, less fat leakage, however had tastier ones. I buy icelands own too and tried the caramalised onion ones which were ok. The asda ones looked nicer and have bought their smart value mature cheese for years so not choosy about brand names.
For the first time ever, I've bought Tesco barn eggs just to try. £1.35 for *15 eggs* . The prices of the standard eggs had all gone up considerably and I couldn't get to the farm gate where I usually buy free range eggs because the road was closed. I would not, on principle, buy caged eggs, but at least the hens in barns have some room to move around a bit and roost. Another shopper was also buying the barn eggs and I asked her whether they were okay. She said, yes. Mixed sizes, so sometimes you might want to eat two if they're small. I will post a comment after I've eaten the first one tomorrow what I think, but this is one major food item you could compare - provided the people in your family like eggs. You could compare barn eggs with standard eggs and with the expensive eggs like the Tesco Clarence Court eggs at £2.60 for six. Vast price differences, but do the expensive eggs really taste better?
Apparently the boxes marked free range” are from chickens that lay eggs in only a metre square space to roam. Free range is a supermarket con in my opinion. If you want fresh, either get chickens, or buy from someone who owns chickens.
@@SuperLittleTyke Duck eggs taste & shell colour depends on the variety of duck. My daughters ones were white & tasted much the same as hens eggs, but larger
I have been looking for these in the fridge section. Ah now I know where to find them. I bought 8 Asda sausage for 80p or so even that was cheap but not as good as these frozen ones.
I've had the these essentials ones before, they are what I call cheap cafe/breakfast sausages! I'd give these a 9/10. Never been keen on the essentials burgers tho
Like a few comments l gave up on Richmond sausages a while back now Gareth as the fat that came out of them was unbelievable. Think l could deep fry my chips in the fat that came out of several of them. NASTY!! Big time. So love your video's,well done 🤩👌👌
On the Comparison bit the Essentials are per 2 grilled sausages and the Richmond are 1 raw sausages so the cooking process will alter the salt and sugar contents
I usually get the Richmond 8s or 12s -12s often £2 in Tesco but i have found they have gone downhill over the last few months sometimes have lots of gristle in them, keep up the good work.
You'd probably have to grill or fry that Richmond sausage in a pan to get a better colour Gareth, I dont particularly like Richmond sausages as I find them pretty much tasteless. The value one did look much better imo, my mum would buy a pack of the sainsburys pork and herb frozen sausages when we were growing up...they were pretty good if I remember. I do love a decent sausage with a bit of brown sauce 😋
To be honest, I buy 2 packs of 14 thick Richmond sausages, from Iceland, sometimes and I quite like me. Not the best sausage but if you fry them nice, they are quite nice. I do like the odd sausage and bacon, sausage omelette for breakfast or sausage mash peas and gravy for lunch or dinner. I watched Blue Van Man reviewing Harvester cooked breakfast and it looked so good. I was starving aswell. Sausage looked great. Nicely brown. Lovely looking hash browns. Bacon etc. Although, he covered it in syrup.
Richmond sausages are the only ones I'll eat as I don't like lumps in my sausage. I usually buy them off the chilled counter. Looking at the two sausages the Asda one did look better. I cook mine in the air fryer and they always come out lovely and brown
Hi thanks for your reply. I know there's not a lot of pork in them but they are the only ones I like the taste of and they have no lumps in. I've tried Cumberland before but didn't like the texture
I've never been able to cook Richmond's sausages without them splitting. You can't justify paying over double for them over the Asda Essentials for sure. I've just bought Lidl's new pork & Bramley apple sausages and they are banging. Be interesting to see them up against premium Jolly Hog pork & apple sausages. Lidl are £2.19, Jolly Hog are £3.50 so a big difference.
I’ve never ever ever had a Richmond sausage split. You must have been unlucky. Only sausage that’s ever split, in my whole life, was Iceland 40 sausages for like £2. Many years ago and I never bought em again because I was horrified at the thought of the poor quality.
I always cook sausages in the Air fryer, All come out nicely browned and not spilt. So it's purely down to the taste, When it comes to frozen sausages Richmond's wins evetime for me.. But they used to be much cheaper than they are now! I'd happily buy the Asda essentials instead to save pennies as they are nice, In fact I don't think I've come across a bad frozen sausage to be honest, It's just Richmond's is the nicest.
When you did the comparison the Asda numbers were for 2 sausages and the Richmond was for 1. Asda had me when I saw the spices ginger, nutmeg, white pepper, cardamom and mace they have to taste good. So am off to Asda tomorrow as I love me a sausage butty with brown sauce!
Virtually every meat product is available in fresh or frozen form in the UK. Frozen is always cheaper but tends to be of a slightly lower quality. You pays your money and takes your choice!
Hi. I always use Asda smart price but now the essential range sausages for sausage casserole. They always absorb the flavours much better than any other sausages 🤤🤤😍😍
Hi Gareth another interesting review. You mentioned that the Richmond sausages Didn't look as brown as they do on the pack I am afraid that is a good selling point on Behalf of the makers of the sausages. I suppose they put them like that to sell them. Thanks for posting.
Hi Gaz You get what you pay for. I'm sorry but I'm spoilt by my local butcher.. 80% pork.. and taste amazing.. No sulphites and additives. Not cheap but the enjoyment is on a different level. Downside, apart from price.. unless you freeze them they don't keep more than 24-48 hours before they taint in flavour but that's because everything is natural food there are no preservatives... Unfortunately many people may never get to taste real pork sausages and that's a shame as additives make up to 60% (or more) of most high street products. Keep up the excellent reviews...
Always have a bag of just essentials (smart price)sausages in the freezer they are great for a quick meal or a sausage stew i even defrost them n take the skins off n make sausage meatballs n add extra seasonings and flavorings like mixed herbs n paprika etc but u shuld defo try the just essentials chilled sausages u get 8 for under a quid n they taste like a good quality sausage in my opinion
I have never got Richmond sausage as only 42% of pork I have said this to you in the past for me Aldi Oakhurst Cook From Frozen Thick Pork Sausages Lightly Seasoned 800g/16 Pack £1.79 Pork (61%) but I will defo try the Just Essentials range as lot's are doing food reviews & some of the food omg defo going to buy them as always great video Please Please Please keep them coming

So yes the cheaper version are probably a lot better. Thanks Gareth see you soon. ❤👍❤👍❤
Cheers Steven, all the best pal
good you do everyday stuff as people are struggling hard well done going to join spot on
Cheers Robin
The asdas range seems to be pretty good at their price points, fantastical reviews
Keep going Gareth, love your videos.
cheers pal 👍
Hi Gareth, a brilliant review as always, I have to admit the only time i would eat a cheap sausage is in a buttie and apart from that i get the rest from my local butcher, P's red sauce 😊🍻🙏
cheers Sean
Going back to our conversation regarding cheeseburgers. I went to Heron Foods today and got a cheeseburger for £1.39. Not a bad price but as i mentioned before adding 3 cheese slices and more ketchup. Handy having a Spoons nearby for the heinz ketchup sachets
Haha cheers pal
Love your content. Have binged loads over the last few days. Could you make an Aldi playlist if you have the time?
Cheers Lewis good idea 👍👍
I cook my frozen richmonds in the oven, I do love them, less fat leakage, however had tastier ones. I buy icelands own too and tried the caramalised onion ones which were ok. The asda ones looked nicer and have bought their smart value mature cheese for years so not choosy about brand names.
thanks 😊
You ever tried duck eggs i love them so tasty
@@dannyhogi4953 No, I've only ever eaten hens' eggs. Someone once told me that duck eggs are quite strong-tasting and are an acquired taste.
@@SuperLittleTyke Duck eggs taste & shell colour depends on the variety of duck. My daughters ones were white & tasted much the same as hens eggs, but larger
@@SuperLittleTyke there bigger and i think they have a bit of meaty taste in a way go nice with cooked breakfast
Love Supermarkets to Come Out with...ULTRA-Essentials....everything in the Pennies....
I have been looking for these in the fridge section. Ah now I know where to find them. I bought 8 Asda sausage for 80p or so even that was cheap but not as good as these frozen ones.
Love your videos
You're welcome
I've had the these essentials ones before, they are what I call cheap cafe/breakfast sausages! I'd give these a 9/10. Never been keen on the essentials burgers tho
Like a few comments l gave up on Richmond sausages a while back now Gareth as the fat that came out of them was unbelievable. Think l could deep fry my chips in the fat that came out of several of them. NASTY!! Big time. So love your video's,well done 🤩👌👌
Thank you very much
On the Comparison bit the Essentials are per 2 grilled sausages and the Richmond are 1 raw sausages so the cooking process will alter the salt and sugar contents
Cheers pal
When comparing traffic lights the richmond are 1 raw sausage. Asda are 2 grilled. They often do this to make it hard to compare.
these are the fundamental questions on life we need to answer!!!!!!!
I usually get the Richmond 8s or 12s -12s often £2 in Tesco but i have found they have gone downhill over the last few months sometimes have lots of gristle in them, keep up the good work.
Thank you very much 👍👍will do
love tesco cheap sausages in a bagel. went off richmond ages ago.
I do love a decent sausage with a bit of brown sauce 😋
cheers James yes they needed browning up, all the best, Gareth
Good video Gareth
cheers David
To be honest, I buy 2 packs of 14 thick Richmond sausages, from Iceland, sometimes and I quite like me. Not the best sausage but if you fry them nice, they are quite nice. I do like the odd sausage and bacon, sausage omelette for breakfast or sausage mash peas and gravy for lunch or dinner. I watched Blue Van Man reviewing Harvester cooked breakfast and it looked so good. I was starving aswell. Sausage looked great. Nicely brown. Lovely looking hash browns. Bacon etc. Although, he covered it in syrup.
thanks
Richmond sausages are the only ones I'll eat as I don't like lumps in my sausage. I usually buy them off the chilled counter. Looking at the two sausages the Asda one did look better. I cook mine in the air fryer and they always come out lovely and brown
Richmond 49 % meat are awful ....buy a butchers sausage ,more pork for your £ and less E numbers and crap
Hi thanks for your reply. I know there's not a lot of pork in them but they are the only ones I like the taste of and they have no lumps in. I've tried Cumberland before but didn't like the texture
I had to laugh at the Richmond sausage pack saying they're like thick sausages. What would a chipolata of their's look like?
A very good Monday afternoon to you sir from Wellington Somerset
afternoon David
I've never been able to cook Richmond's sausages without them splitting. You can't justify paying over double for them over the Asda Essentials for sure. I've just bought Lidl's new pork & Bramley apple sausages and they are banging. Be interesting to see them up against premium Jolly Hog pork & apple sausages. Lidl are £2.19, Jolly Hog are £3.50 so a big difference.
cheers Pal
Hi there what a good video keep up the good work
Hey, thanks
When you did the comparison the Asda numbers were for 2 sausages and the Richmond was for 1. Asda had me when I saw the spices ginger, nutmeg, white pepper, cardamom and mace they have to taste good.
So am off to Asda tomorrow as I love me a sausage butty with brown sauce!
Thanks for the info!
We don't have frozen sausages here!! It astounds me how much more frozen goods you have over there compared to us.
really, hope your well over in Oz
Virtually every meat product is available in fresh or frozen form in the UK. Frozen is always cheaper but tends to be of a slightly lower quality. You pays your money and takes your choice!
A true hero 👏 no, you don't need to buy brands to feed your kids a hot meal! This guy proves it.
Just watched this one. I'm with you on sausages. I got morrisons value sausage and they had more pork than Richmond. Never looked back 😊
I have to say I wouldn't buy either of them but thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
You’re welcome 😊
Love the just essential sausages. To me taste like sausages used to when I was a kid.
Hi. I always use Asda smart price but now the essential range sausages for sausage casserole. They always absorb the flavours much better than any other sausages 🤤🤤😍😍
Thanks for sharing!
Your a brave man...... what is in that 58% is anyone’s guess!! No about of money would make me eat either of those ..... I’d rather it my own feet!!
The essentials are good with a sausage casserole mix and some mash.
Hi Gareth another interesting review. You mentioned that the Richmond sausages
Didn't look as brown as they do on the pack
I am afraid that is a good selling point on
Behalf of the makers of the sausages.
I suppose they put them like that to sell them. Thanks for posting.
you're welcome
I love them just essential sausages nothing wrong with them. And the block of cheese they do for £3.65p is amazing!! 😊 maybe give it a try Gareth
Cheers pal 👍👍
The problem with my local ASDA (Crewe) is stock level on their own sausages,so lately have had to get Richmonds
Hi Gaz
You get what you pay for. Keep up the excellent reviews...
cheers Hazzard, yes butchers are good.
My 'local' butcher is a mate and his unit is next door but one to mine. We do swopsies and I help him maintain his equipment. I rarely buy meat.
Cheers yes more coming 👍👍
watching this video made me realize. i not had bangers and mash for ages. so easy and cheap to make a large meal. only thing , i always make a bit too much mash lol
Can you do supermarket own brand chicken nuggets vs the expensive ones?
I don’t mind cheap sausages at all, but Richmonds are a different breed! Absolutely minging!
Iceland frozen thick Irish sausages FTW.
Cheers James
