For every person who insists that the system is broken, that you can never really achieve anything, there is someone like this man who proves them wrong. Jose represents everyone, no matter where they start out from making their way in life, and finding their happiness in it. Only from humble beginnings can one reach true greatness, and he proves it to be true.

I agree 100%. I have several of these examples around me every day in Construction in California. Ironically one is also from Michoacan Mexico. Don't dare tell them the American dream is dead. They're living proof. Another guy came from Guatemala 25 years ago. When he left he was making $3 a day. Fast forward to today and all 3 kids went to college, and he has their home +3 rental homes. True hard work and commitment will always land you in a good place. Well usually not NASA but doing well..lol

    Awesome show Jocko. I am
proud to say that I know Jose. I worked with him at Lawrence Livermore Lab. Witnessed much of what he speaks about including his astronaut application process. As disappointing as it was when he left the lab for Houston it was even more exciting when he was selected. And of course his launch. Awesome life story. Awesome human being and awesome guest. One can absolutely do most anything they put their mind to. You just have to “get after it”.

He could have been accurate and understood, but he choose to be accurate and precise. I wouldn't bother to fact check because I know he's studied and practiced and verified the answers. He's very intelligent but he's clearly a very prepared person, good lesson in there.

I'm an early childhood educator, and it's crazy how much a consistent environment can do for a child! In our classrooms we try to help incorporate the child's home into the classroom. So we do family boards, if a child is bilingual we put labels and get books that are in their native language. We are also encouraged to learn a few words in the language to help communication. Your teacher was amazing!

Amazing so many MILLIONS of Americans do not grasp what they have in our country. They choose ignorance and laziness to their, and more importantly their descendants, demise. So grateful I grew up in the Texas Hill Country in a place with everyone being different. We spoke “Spanglish” and it’s served me all my life and continues to this day to do so. Growing up multilingual gives you such benefit, living in my friends houses with their Parents as The Law and learning the Culture and my Mexican friends getting the same in the Anglo houses, the benefits are never ending. We were one big Family you see and there was no difference between any of us. No matter the 1st language spoken in the individual home, English, German, Polish, Czech, Spanish, it didn’t matter. If you wanted to know what was going on you picked up on what was being said and in doing that you got an in-depth look into how people thought and lived. People are so much the same and yet so different at the extremes, all is beneficial to everyone if you pay attention. I’m especially grateful for the difference in eating the same basic foods but getting to enjoy them prepared in different ways from cultural influences and traditions! What a childhood and place/way to grow up! Jose and I are born in the same year and I can relate exactly to his mindset from those times.

I think the "content of his character" is one of the reasons why he was chosen to be an Astronaut that isn't mentioned. I believe it plays a big factor, especially when the selection process gets narrowed down to 12 or 20. For him to invite/bring those two teachers who impacted him most & have them sit with his family at his first launch...to show them such respect by his actions & not just words. You couldn't ask for a better way to appreciate & honor a teacher more than this.

25:27 ... Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I was living in the city of Ventura when the big Northridge earthquake happened.. I was jolted awake, ran outside to see the sky flashing green as the distant massive towers from the power plant swayed and ran into each other causing massive green sparks to light up the night sky.. and then, after the quake was over... I looked up, and it brought tears to my eyes and took my breath away. The same sky that I grew up looking at, with Orion, the Big Dipper, the Seven Sisters or Pleiades, was unrecognizable. There were so many stars everywhere that I couldn't even make out the usual constellations that are always there. The colors, the density of the stars, and the bright Milky Way, like a bright river flowing across the sky... it looked like a magic movie set, it completely took me by surprise and took my breath away. There were no city lights from Ventura, Camarillo, Oxnard, you name it... they were all knocked out by the quake... hence the true sky, once and only once was seen and it transported me to Yosemite, to the High Sierras... our beloved vacation spots at the time, and the sky at night was one of the reasons that we loved to go out camping for a week or two at some isolated High Sierra lake, as the stars were enough to watch and count as we fell asleep each night. Now, at that time, I was looking up at that same wide massive beautiful scene... but from my own backyard.

I have SO MUCH respect for hispanic MEN who work hard in a foreign land, all day, seven days per week; in the HOT sun and then go home and raise children, while protecting and supporting a family, all with positivity and thanks for their jobs!
You don't see that in the "LBC."

Growing up in northern California myself, not too far from the Stockton/ Modesto area, this episode hit me right in the feels, so to speak. I shared with both my mother and my sister. . Gotta say though, as someone who has fled my once beautiful home state, where regular people used to be able to actually afford to live, I was stunned when José said he was a Democrat! The policies of the democratic party have absolutely ruined California, but you already know that, Jocko. You were just too polite to ask, "Why? Why one earth are you still a Democrat?" 😅 Killin me, Smalls! You aren't political, I know, I know... Nonetheless, much love to you all. 💕💕💕

Great episode. What an amazing story and an amazing story teller. Only disappointment is ordering his book from his website to Australia has $50 shipping on it! Tried to find local but could only find ebooks. Audio version coming out?
