Oksana was the it girl during that time period. She was new, young, and skated with so much charisma and personality. That being said, her technical marks at times were far too high. I guess some of the judges were just so smitten with her that they overlooked her faults (not that that's a valid excuse or anything).
Technically Oksana Baiul was a beautiful figure skater before she had a rocky career. Please don’t blame her for what happened to her. It’s not her fault!
5.8 by one judge was too high as her triple lutz was clearly two footed, but honestly Baiul's technical scores in the long for what she did were much more inflated than the short. Her short was just incredible outside of the triple lutz error, although due to the error I probably had her 3rd behind not only Nancy but Surya who had her best ever short program. I do agree with her being over Lu Chen. I love this program but her combo error was definitely worse than Oksana's, and a bigger deduction, and Baiul was the World Champion. With the long program though I think Oksana would have been lucky to even be 2nd. I was never a fan of Nancy and I don't find her skating that impressive generally, but she was still robbed of a gold medal at this particular event, as much I almost puke myself saying that. I am sort of relieved she didn't win as Nancy's attitude as Olympic gold medalist would be unbearable but it was the proper result. And Lu probably deserved the silver although 4th in the short (at best) was correct.
I think the judges for these games had decided they were going to give Oksana the gold before the opening ceremonies had even happened. Oksana did her part to help them by not falling on her ass. And she made sure she wouldn’t by two footing her jumps.
Exactly and amen! And consider that in figure skating, there's the nasty "wait your turn" unwritten rule. But here comes Oksana out-of-nowhere in 1993 winning the World Championships over a flawless and surprisingly elegant and dramatic Surya Bonaly. And then as you mentioned, the 94 Olympics. It was clear that unwritten rule applied to everyone except Oksana.
even if she couldn't have finished the double toe after the lutz, the lutz was ok...oksana has landed it on two feet....i can t understand lu chen could have received 5.2 5.3 and oksana 5.6 5.7 on the first mark.... with the new system of rules....oksana should have been far away in the ranking...
She had triple jumps that were delayed in the air. Unusual and elegant.
So young, yet so elegant. She casts a spell on the audience.

@@annecohen8927 Artistically she was beautiful. But technically I found her a bit lacking.

Omg i Love Lu Chen. People fixated on Oksana and ignored Lu Chen.
its racism to be blunt. white european girl outscores better skaters like lu chen is no surprise .
It was the 93/94 bias campaign of Oksana, that's why.
What is your point?
Love her too, but she stuffed up early. Can't expect high marks from that.
Очень хорошая фигуристка, но была явная ошибка и программа слабее, чем у Оксаны.

Chen Lu seemed to have very weak spins.
Jonathan Partridge it was her spirals that I found lacking. I like her but she did have some faults.
