- Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - 1996 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Short Program - Chen Lu of China skated a wonderfully elegant program to place 2nd going into the Long Program. She skated to "Spring Breeze" from the album, "Chinese Melodies for Violin & Guitar," by Takako Nishizaki (Violin) and Gerard Garcia (Guitar).

Loved the “delays” in her difficult triple jumps! Unusual and beautiful to watch.
One of the most artistic skaters of all times. Just beautiful overall.
This is such a beautiful short program. It's a perfect example of what a "perfect" SP looked before IJS. She is just so elegant and classy!

Yup still watching it 27 years later. Only thing for me was tye costume I loved it but not the colour. Sing was called spring breeze so dress should have bern a pale green IMO this colour is the colour of a winter srorny sky
Kwan this particular year had all the momentum but watching these so many years later I can say that Chen Lu had the better sp and should have had higher artistic marks, I mean two 5.7's? bare minimum should be 5.8. LuLu's lz was higher and had way more flow after the double toe and the whole performance was just so special. Michelle had better footwork and more pizazz but for me, Chen Lu won the sp.

I know, they are both beautiful and captivating, one of those "Can we hand out TWO gold medal" competitions. Michelle deserved the gold, and Lu deserved to repeat. I loved when Lu Chen skated to Chinese music it was so breathtaking and ethereal.

Love the music and her performance. Just one thing to clarify here: the music is not from China, it's from a famous Taiwanese song. I'm glad that she made this into a very impressive SP.
To be accurate, it is a Banlam dialect song from Taiwan province of Republic China. And Chen can say it is a Chinese song.

Taiwan doesn't have a language. You stole a language from a Chinese province. SO speak your language, if you don't have one, stay quiet
Beautiful! And for those who say the US is biased, notice that EVERY judge gave Kwan first place ordinals in the short, except for the US judge, who gave it to Chen. Can you imagine any other country doing that to their skater?

Underrated program, to be honest. People rave about her LP from this Worlds, but I much prefer this SP!

Phew... I couldn't choose between Michelle Kwan and Lu Chen in the SP or LP... both were incredible... definitely love re-watching these programs THANK you for posting these and ALL your posts.

A nicely choreographed program, though the spins were weak. The requirement for the flying spin was 8 rotations, but she only completed 7. I can't quite recall the combination spin requirements from the 1990s, but she only had 4 rotations in actual position on the forward part of the spin (2 full rotations of the camel and 2 full rotations of the layback). The backspin portion of the combination spin was only slightly better. But as I said, it was a nicely choreographed program.

Well, in the Champion Series final in 1997/98, the German judge gave Tanja Szewczenko the lower mark, and I think had her behind Tara Lipinski.

I didn't like the colour liked the style if her boobs were covered slightly more
