What is a PhD 4 Myths about phD thesis and SOCK:
In this video Dr Tahir Yaqub explains some misconception about PhD and PhD thesis and how you can prove that your thesis has significant original contribution to knowledge. The video discusses is there a set length for a PhD thesis, how to format a thesis, the importance of doing a literature review when you start your PhD. There must be two important outcomes of the literature review you do. First you should be able to determine a tiny area or field of research where no one is doing the research. You should also understand what other scientists and researchers are doing. In order to understand Significant Original Contribution to Knowledge (SOCK), one must understand:
    1 What is a contribution
    2. How would you prove that it is original &
    3. When it will become significant
Once you understand what is PhD, how PhD works, it will be easier for you to do PhD.

Best thing is to check the university to which the thesis is submitted. These might have thesis format, format for references etc. Sometimes templates are provided. Some universities now require report of plagiarism check using turn it in

There are different types and formats of a Ph.D. thesis that varies to a different part of the world. Also, the approach towards the thesis varies accordingly. For example, a European one (Italy or Germany for instance) focuses more on the publication or thesis made of the published chapter. Each chapter corresponds to a paper. There will be a strong Introduction summarizing all these works (or forthcoming compilation and discussions) and a brief conclusion. In fact, recently I found a German or Dutch thesis which was merely a compilation of papers (six or seven Q1's, if I am not mistaken) plus a few pages of Introduction. I find the Commonwealth countries still following the conventional thesis style (Intro, Lit rev, contents, result and a discussion plus a conclusion) and they stress too much on its lit review and the gap. To find a gap in research (especially in fundamental science) is not an easy task either, whence most of the easy problems have been solved. This is the crucial instance where a Ph.D student requires his or her supervisor's Midas touch. Else they will be lost in the literature review as you have mentioned. It happened to me also, friends suggested me to combine the present problem with my previous knowledge of the field and it works wonderfully!

As you said never publish in the conference.Sir isn’t it good idea to publish your initial results in ieee conference and when you get full set of results then publish your work in an Article suppose ieee transaction.
What you suggests wait for full results and then publish an article or strt from conference and then go for article?
Plus also conference give you the chance to interact with other researchers

To Dr, what if my supervisor kept changing my research direction? My supervisor changed my research direction from building new system, to building something small which totally shifted my months of hard work and literature reviews as my previous literature review will not be relevant for the research direction now? Do I have to start a new literature review again ?
