Friendly Sri Lankan Lady Calls Me Fat (TWICE) 🇱🇰

- When I visited Sri Lanka about a year ago I met Thilini, a friendly Sri Lankan lady that runs a juice shop in Negombo, Sri Lanka. Of course when I returned to Negombo I had to go and say hi to her.
After that I made my way to Ratnapura with my own tuktuk from tuktukrental.com
When I took a break a friendly family invited me into their house for some tea and homemade biscuits.
Eventually after a long drive from Negombo to Ratnapura I made it to my hotel with a gorgeous view.

With my CZcams videos I aim to show a different perspective than what most travel vloggers would do by interacting with people and really getting the local insights of the places I visit. No matter their social background I treat everyone equal. Sometimes this results in awkard conversations but I love it!

1) In Sri Lanka, saying "you've put on" is actually a compliment, unlike in Europe 😆
2) The person offering tea assumed you were from Australia.
3) Tea is consumed in two ways: with milk (milk tea) and without (plain tea).
4) The fruit you tried was Rambutan, similar to Lychee.

It's complement. Don't ever say to a Sri Lankan "You have became skinny". Lol. They consider it as offensive because becoming skinny is considered as a sign of poorness. Having a full body is considered as a sign of prosperity. I'm a Sri Lankan.

Negombo is my town . I live in a suburb of Negombo. I have been watching your videos since you came to Srilanka for the first time. I am very sad to hear and see that young entrepreneurs like her have been badly affected by this collapsed economy. I remember in the last video she mentioned that she had two more shops but now she has only one , very sad to hear that.
Only negombo is badly effected due to ripping off tourists by all businessess. Food drinks and accommodation. Now because of heigh ways in operation most tourists preffer other cities, Colombo, South,kandy, and Ella,
People of negombo think tourists are walking ATM,
That's WHAT ALL FORING FRIENDS
AND TOURISTS TELLS ME .
I AM ALWAYS WORKING WITH TOURISTS.
ALSO NEGOMBO IS WITH FULL OF THEIVES,DRUG DEALERS AND ADIICTS😂& SCAMMERS.
ALSO FILTHIEST STREETS , PEOPLE THROW GARBAGE ALL OVER . UNLIKE OTHER CITIES IN SRI LANKA. 😂
Inorder for a western person to understand & appreciate Sri Lanka, They should visit other Asian countries and spend time there. Then they would know how unique & different Sri Lanka is. Let me know what you think and if I’m wrong.

Bro, Don't use 95 Octane. These tuktuk engines haven't design for 95 Octane. So it gives same performance as 92 Octane. If you refill with 95 Octane it will be a waste of money.

Most Sri Lankans consider getting chubbier as a way of them being successful. It may have originated from old age since we had a lot of families living in rural areas where people had a hard time finding food, and if someone is successful and good with money, they get to eat a lot of food as they want. I don't know if this is entirely correct.

Sri lankan living in Europe. Calling someone Fat is not considered offensive in Sri lanka. Sometimes it can be a compliment too. I know it can be offensive in Europe.

What she meant was that you have gained weight. Saying "you have become fat" in Sri Lanka does not necessarily mean you are fat; it means that you have gained weight. She compared how you looked previously when you last visited her place to your present appearance. There is nothing to be concerned about Tim, especially in your case.

Thank you for this video, but I see often that food sellers in Sri Lanka dont use any désinfection or even gloves while selling food. This guy prepeared mango with his hands even without washing them..Is there some special ritual or you simply dont afraid of germs or bacteria, cause there is a very hot weather...and..it just makes me to pose this question)). Thank you. :)
Thanks for your comment! I must say after traveling so long I think my stomach got pretty strong. Lately I rarely get sick. Knock on wood! I also try to pay attention to where I buy food. If the place looks a bit too dodgy I would definitely skip it!

HI, the fruits is not lycee, it is rambutan, a tropical fruits, you can googled it... the way you ate it was correct, either just put the whole and spit out the seed or just take bit by bit around the seed...either way is fine.

She means no disrespectful. In Sri Lanka, people dont see calling each others fat much of a big deal.. They mean well most of the times. In this video, she is not being rude, trust me. She means well. Not trying to body shame or anything. That is how it is in different cultures.
A tropical fruit. In Malaysia we call it "Rambutan". "Rambut" = hair. Hairy fruit. Bite the skin to break it.
Same in SL as well. I think we got some varieties of Rambutan from Malaysia

You have to bite the rambutan a little bit at the top, which makes it easier to peel the skin apart. Then the whole middle part goes in your mouth & you chew away until only the seed is left.
