  • What makes a game special to you? The unique gameplay? The story? The characters? A combination of these factors? Something else entirely? In this video I take a look at what makes Ragnarok Online special to me and what it means for a game to be a "Spiritual Successor."

RO made me feel immersed like no other MMO back in the day, something I always had a hard time explaining to WoW players. This video summed it up beautifully.
    MMO devs, take note.

Yes. You were your character. It's because you didn't have direction. Like the video said, in today's MMOs, quests are how you level up - and there is usually a linear progress - (Quest till you've reached quest cap. Grind for EXP to lvl up until you are high enough for next quests. Rinse and repeat)
In ragnarok. You were just brought in the world. You were not special. You were not a hero. Literally, you get dropped at a city and you were on your own. You had to figure out what to do. All the decisions you made pretty much came from you, lol.

It is incredibly how unique Ragnarok still is in the mmorpg scenario. No other mmo, not even new ones have monster and class system that Ragnarok have. For me, Ragnarok was and still is the best mmorpg of all times. And for that I am sad that gravity never made a remake for this game.

i think its because they are too focused on making mobile games to even put thought or effort into something that could actually make them money. If they had a remake of ragnarok online i would be there in a split second. at this point i think we will see a remake of star wars galaxies before we ever see a ragnarok online remake.

18:44 One of my favorite things about Ragnarok Online OST is how some tracks take risks by steering away from the "ambience" to focus on the journey itself in a very personal way. On some fields between Morroc and Prontera, you get the track "I miss you" which goes out of it's way to be really sad and emotional. That track doesn't "represent" you hunting for materials or MVPs on these areas, and yet, you start feeling things you weren't expecting and your perception becomes different by being exposed to it. A lot of people judge soundtracks by whether they represent things well but Ragnarok has plenty of these shiny examples of changing the focus. Above all, Ragnarok puts the soundtrack on the driver's seat rather than deeming it an embelishment or a secondary aspect.

@@lunasllenas1997 The issue is, game developers are too busy grinding their individual "stats" (or, well, "zeny" anyway...) to pay much attention to the state of gaming quality in the world. Instead of improving upon great games of the past, we get gacha mechanics.

You nailed it with the quests, modern days mmo turned them into chores because, frankly, of WoW success.
Though I have to admit, the job quests of FFXIV where very interesting, some part making you learn your job (for example the White mage one making you learn, you have to do damage not heal only).
    The problem tho?
Modern days mmo community doesn't care, don't read, just skip skip skip every cutscene, every bit of texts.
They want everything as soon as possible.
Nowadays the journey doesn't matte,r what matter is the end goal.
And when they reach said end gold?
They complain about how there's no content.
    I want to go back to the good old days ;_;

You know what I don't understand.
Take Pokemon Sun and Moon. At it's core it's the same game from 20 years ago. They kept refining it and people love it.
Now take RO. It's clear people want RO. They want something similar. Yet nobody is actually willing to give them that.

As gaming became mainstream in the mid-00's, developers started dumbing things down in order to make games more accessible. This is the crux of the failing MMO - most of these games are meant to be hardcore in nature.

they couldn't regulate cheating. Old timers and stronger guilds were too powerful or cheating (bots, buying zeny) and it's too hard to regulate or punish. And so the market for items got insane overpriced, so the game became too daunting for new people. Without a constant healthy population, it gets stale for old timers. Then Gravity kept making changes for the worse.

I loved the part when you compared the OST. Songs in RO are really something to pay attention to, of course, you get bored after a while and turn them off, but initially it's great, and part of the nostalgia comes from the songs. I may try Tree of Savior but it seems to me they put little to no effort to bring this game alive, comparad to classic MMOs. Seems to be a tendency for future games unfortunately.

the quote "its about the destination, not the journey" just about sums it up why i always go back to RO, no other game ever gave me this feeling of community where you make bonds with people when you grind the same damn monsters to the OST for hours on end, it wasn't about becoming the strongest character with the best gear or level rather it was about having fun playing the damn game. i feel like modern mmos miss this mark and to some extent i myself became a bit more competitive focused in my games. i often wish to "go back" to the time where i actually enjoyed just playing an mmo for the time i had with it, rather than trying to be competitive. im trying to go back a bit to the old mindset, like for example i picked up roleplaying in wow because just playing the raids and doing the hardest content isnt ... fun. or rather its fun in a way but i want more out of my games.
anyways, great video and i even saw my guild in there lol

The way RO handled it's storyt is exactly the same way the Souls series did. The world is explained by the environments around you, the enemies you fight, the people you talk to, and the items you discover and examine. I have a feeling an updated version of RO would do magnificent in this era where quite a few gamers are starting to get tired of being treated like idiots and want to discover things on their own without hand holding like it was in MMOs before WoW ruined everything. Shame it'll never happen.
    Edit:
17:37 Oh god this really touched my heart. I loved that quest, specially that some of the questions to pass it do test the players's chivalry itself. What do you do if you find another adventurer in trouble who pulled too much? How do you react if a novice comes to you for help and advice? What do you seek to gain from your adventure; fame, wealth, friendship, love? All required you to answer with humility and honor, cementing in you the mentality of a tank. Someone who protects and guides others who can't do it themselves. It made me so proud to be a Knight.

prolly one of the best 30 minute video about RO here in youtube. this guy nailed almost all of the things that i've wanted to say and describe to Ragnarok as a game, as an MMO, as an immersive experience and a borderline second life overall.
started RO back in 2003 till 2007 as a close beta tester here in the Phlippines (pRO). ive continuously had an on and off relationship with this MMO throughout the years starting in 2006 due to being seduced and lured by other MMOs that the same publisher has been releasing and heavily advertising. still, even though i had a hard time being devoted and loyal only to RO, one thing i know for sure is i keep on going back to it at the end of the day :3
i still play RO upto this date, unfortunately our old server (pRO) handled by the previous publisher (Level-Up! games) already died back in 2015, a new publisher arise and had given life to RO once again here in the country (Electronics Extreme, ROph). it's as if Ragnarok just refuses to die, and im happy with this resilient trait of this game

Haha, now I finally know what those shadows stand for (15:47). Nice analysis on the music, I've never thought about it, I usually just, felt it.
Ragnarok was also my first game, my brother introduced it to me when I was a kid, I would watch him play and talk with people after I came from school, little me was mindblowed. So when I first logged in I was greated by this stranger named Zion, I thought she was a real person, so I thanked and tried to talk to her, only to discover later what NPCs were.
So many stories, so many memories. One of my favorites was the first card that I dropped, it was a rocker card, my brother told me to sell it because cards are pretty rare and worth alot, so little me was excited that I would be able to buy a new sword, so I went on a straight line to the npc and when I saw that he could only give 10z for my card made me disappointed, my thought process was that the card was not one of the valuable ones. So I went to my brother and told him that, he laughed so much that I think I've made his day that day.
After years I got pretty invested into the ragnarok story, I started to roleplay, explore and learn more about the world and its habitants. Amazing game, experiences and people that I may never know who they are, I'll never forget them.

multi-player immersion is vital in every MMO, something that only RO perfected! From the basic principles of Supply and Demand of the in-game market that determines the pricing of items and gears (merchant class vending) to the subtle details of class and their roles, like paying a priest to warp you in specific maps or resurrecting or even buffing makes a lot of difference, sage's endow, hunter's hunting skills, alchemist's potions, crusader's tankyness, wizard's AoE, bards and dancers ensembles! a very effective symbiotic system no one can ever make ❤️

Ragnarök online is hands down my favorite game ever.
I started playing it in the (brazilian) open beta up until Satan Morroc. And the way i see it is that the devs kept trying to add elements of more popular mmorpgs to appeal to a more general audience, and this is what killed the game for me, when i was playing the game for the first time i wold spend hours walking across maps trying to find out what was the best spot to train at my level, doing this i would meet other players, exange information, trade itens and sometimes even form friendships. The way the game works now is just like any other mmo, you got your streamline fetch and hunt quests that every players goes trough the same experience like robots.
I simply loved your video and hope you do more ragnarok, or mmorpg in general analysis content in the future. Great work, keep it up!

    Here's the real secret WHY:
    1. It's really because of Ragnarok's BGM (background music)
    2. It's so EASY and SIMPLE to play (unlike those 3D games)
    3. It almost had no "quests" (except for job change) - which means FREEDOM, which makes it 1000% more exciting!

I humbly ask if there is a sequence to these quests and care to share some links to where I can read them? (including the npc
    dialogues in-game if possible)
(I stumbled upon this video and my curiosity peaked but I do not know if I have the time to play so I will instead read it :>)
    Thank you for your reply!

I agree with you, Ragnarok Online / Private Servers was incredible game experiences that always get to take me back to old days of grinding, partying, and soooo many memorable moments
I'm still listening to its soundtracks sometimes too
I know I'm not much of a gamers like other people do, I haven't even try the latest series from Legend of Zelda or engaging things like Sword Art Online Lycoris or something, thats hardcore stuff for me...
But aside from RO, I get to carves another incredible gaming memories in PS-1/PS-X which I consider to tailing the feels of excitement from RO; Legend of Mana , yep... It had almost every aspect of Ragnarok except its just Offline, lone progressive storytale kind of type with end-level, and no chatting with other players. But it still have great Soundtrack and havent met the standard which its successors tried too after these years

Moreover the SoundTemp also developed its OST as well.

I've played RO before and I really enjoyed that it almost killed my youth and spent all of my allowance to this Pay to play game. The only thing I really know is that, it doesn't really matter what game you play, it's whom you play it with and that is your friends before :)

It's a Knight class thing. The skill bowling bash had a bug that made it not work correctly sometimes. thats if you where standing on those colered lines on the map. its a grid that every map has but you wouldnt normally know where they are. unless you had some kind of modded game client to show you where the grid lines are so you could avoid them if you want to use bowling bash.

    • @Kojikomos
      @Kojikomos Před 7 lety

well as a ragnarok player myself (have played it since 2006) getting into the story would be pretty tedious right now. Given all the story updates and new chapter releases as well as adjustments due to the renewal which includes monster and class revamps starting points might end up different than you would remember. It would be best if you checked a guide on the internet to find out where to start. But if you are starting from the beginning I hope you have a collossal shet ton of patience because its on episode 15.2 and every episode is fairly long. plus there are God knows how many side quests (which some side quests add a bit of extra background story to the main quest even though they arent part of the main quest) RO is one of those mmo for hardcore gamers lol~ im a hardcore/lazy gamer and by lazy i mean my alchemist is only lv 97 xD not even reborn yet xD

  • @estoylaroca
    @estoylaroca Před 5 lety

I never really realized how good RO's story is until this story.
I just thought of them as "quests", but for some reason, I didn't find them tedious. I find them rather a necessary evil to be stronger. It really felt like as you've said, to prove that you've earn it.
But I think what makes RO so great, is that times were far too simple back then, and RO was really something that accompanied it.
Just think, back then we didn't have Discord, and google wasn't really popular (or even existed?). So what do you do? At least in my country, we have shops or computer hubs, where we can as a neighborhood community, play RO (or any game really) as a 20 man team. We shared exploits, stories, quests, items etc. in that hub. Of course, some days it'd be just pure grinding, like selling warps to Glastheim, or it'd be a goal oriented day, like hunting for an MVP, or being the top team in PVP.
Looking back, in this day and age, would you feel like grinding 5-10 hours a day, for a couple months straight, just to do it all over again? Levelling up from 1-99, transcending then going 1-99? The quick answer would be no, because people nowadays really want everything to be "fast". But in reality, you probably would.
Sometimes RO pops back here and there again, in my country at least, on a private server. Where newbies and pros would play the game all over again. We'd have a small tight community of going around 200-500 (sometimes with dual accounts), of course dying down again after some time.
But the same stuff is still there. On a low rate server, you'd find a lot of people farming the usual grind spots such as sunken ship, the one with the swordfish, etc. You'd also find groups of people in their usual spot. Ours was the outside wall of house of the PVP arena in Prontera.
Fun memories such as click the dog / disguise events where people who were grinding / pvp'ing / hunting etc. would go to town just to participate.
It's just so fun to "EXPERIENCE" a game with other people. It doesn't even really feel like "playing", but it truly felt like living a 2nd life.
Going on the more competitive side, you still have servers with purely WoE gameplay. It was truly another fun recent experience. Imagine, from regular WoE where people would just fuck around killing each other, to a more goal oriented WoE, where you really have to be synchronized.
RO really for its time, offered *A LOT* of things, both in and out of the game. It has such a low entry cap, wherein you only need to know how to pots and click to level up. But such a high ceiling cap, where in game knowledge about the items / skills / etc. and mechanical skills will make you a literal god amongst those newbs.
It's just such a shame that the devs are really afraid of the thought of having people "grind" will make them go away.
I mean sure, I'd hesitate to play a low rate server, but give me a decently packed server of at least 200, and a mid rate, and I'll happily go through all of the trouble.

The mythology in ToS is based upon my country which is not very well known so obviously people wouldn't know it that well and my country is not that well known in general there for finding any information not in our language is really rare so please before you call it obscure understand that just because you don't know it's suddenly obscure. Just like the Valhalla thing. no one knows if it's real or not but because it's more international it's suddenly not obscure.
