Chad is a brilliant drummer with such fluidity and command of the kit, making complex patterns look so effortless. Incredibly underrated given his playing with Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworth, thankful that Drum Channel has him as one of their educational voices.
I have waited almost 30 years to see this again. I saw this in Detroit, it burned the memory in my brain in a great way! Im not sure Chad realizes how many drummers he has affected! I believe Chad the THE most under-appreciated of all of Holdsworth's/Zappa's drummers! Peace from Detroit MI.
I remember when Chad filled in for Marco Minneman on the Steven Wilson tour for the Raven album. His appearance was pretty impromptu so one could forgive him for any discrepancies on such involved material. Not a chance, this dude didn’t break a sweat. Pulled it of flawlessly. The one thing that stands out is a really involved musical section and he pulled out of it a crazy fill that fit perfectly and was technically breathtaking, so much so the whole place collectively gasped in amazement because it was such a deft display of pure craftsmanship. Jack did sing on "Was There?" from the Road Games album Rigel. I love Jack's voice but I do prefer Paul's vocal sound. I just found it such a great fit for Allan's compositions.
If you were lucky enough to see Holdsworth in the 80's you no doubt remember Chad's extraordinary playing and the symbiosis between the three men on stage, be it Jeff Berlin or Jimmy Johnson. It was a must see for all musicians in the Los Angeles/Orange County area, which is where most of us were, stapling flyers to telephone poles, playing shows on the Sunset Strip and mailing the occasional cassette tape to one of those giant, insurmountable record companies.
@@davidlinnartist That's awesome. I also saw that incarnation a couple times, very early, called I.O.U. Husband is a very unique drummer, doesn't have Chad's flow but as you said, capable of brilliance.
...I was fortunate enough to see Allan Holdsworth perform with Chad W. - AND - with Vinnie Coliauta!... Amazing!... These 2 Drummers (similar sense of "Feel" and "smoothness", but different techniques to get it out there)... have performed with some of the best musicians on the Planet (especially AH and FZ).....
Saw Chad w/ Allan at least twice in NYC -- the Road Games tour w/ Jeff Berlin, and later the Metal Fatigue tour w/ Jimmy Johnson. No shade intended on Gary Husband, who's a damn fine drummer (and keyboardist!), but my favorite AH trio became and still is Chad + Jimmy. Otherworldly interaction among those three.
Somehow Chad makes his impossible (and improvised) drumming sound like a restrained and tasteful drum take. He has a Gadd-like ability to really get inside a tune. Such great ears and chops. I always enjoy his playing.
Just an absolute joy to listen to Allan again and see one of the most under-rated drummers of all time. I suspect this music will retain that fresh feel one hundred years into the future.
This is on the same lines I always say about Allan's music and playing: it will take some years until humanity is finally able to understand his stuff. He was not just ahead of his time, he was WAY ahead of his time.
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 indeed, at least noone has arrived yet. Plenty interesting folks out there in a variety of genres however IMHO not coming CLOSE to Allan!
A million years ago, I saw Holdsworth with Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Johnson in a tiny little venue in Denton TX called "Dan's Silver Leaf". It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen (despite the travesty that they didn't play Devil Take the Hindmost).
Allan was not only a brilliant musician and composer, he had a fine eye for excellent musicians. Thank you very much for this great vid, Mr. Wackerman!
Fabulous performance from perhaps the most accomplished, influential drummer of his generation. I saw Chad for the first time with Zappa back in 1983. He was playing a half-acoustic/half-electric kit, and was switching off, casually, between playing left-handed and right-handed ... unreal ... Chad is a true master in action! This is a real lesson for all drummers. Groove, fluidity, tone, taste, effortless, power and nuances.. And one of the most beautiful guitar solo Allan did...
This guy just keeps getting better with age. Saw him countless times with holdsworth back in the eighties. Not only is he getting better but he seems to never age somehow. Amazing performance.
This guy is amazing. I’ve watched him countless times w A.H. & it was always exciting and unpredictable. He slices things up in his own unique way. Always a pleasure to see
Watching and hearing him play with Allan Holdsworth always gave you a face busting grin. It seemed like the best kind of musical sensory overload possible. Like he was trying to break everything and still make it work, (it looked like a kid having too much fun). He gave you way more than enough to try to focus on. When you took a break from zeroing in on Wackerman, There was Holdsworth putting out such a vastness of brain melting excellence that there was no chance of soaking it all in. There are lots of brilliant guys doing shows now, but that was some of the greatest %&*# of all time.
Super versatile and fluid drummer. A guy who plays folk ballads with James Taylor as easily as he blazes through odd time weird compositions by Zappa. But my favorite Chad Wackerman side is this one, where he is free to improvise and use dynamics, speed, and especially his amazing phrasing.
I had the experience of a lifetime when little old me, once a goofy boy from the South Shore of Massachusetts, helped Chad Wackerman set up the merch table at Jonny D's in Somerville before a gig with Allan. I gave Chad my Swiss Army knife to open up a box of compact discs that would be up for sale post-show. He thanked me and smiled. We got a little bit of merch out on the table and then he said he could do the rest. He was so 'normal.' Then he played a great show with Allan and (I believe) Jimmy Johnson. Thank you for all you have contributed to this weary world, Chad!
