A book having more diverse characters shouldn't make it less relatable because there's more to the characters than their sexuality/race/gender/etc. As a queer person I've read many many books about cis straight people and I'm still able to relate to some of them because of their personalities. I also think that a book not being relatable shouldn't be an issue, by reading books we can get to know different experiences and learn new things, and that's a good thing.
English is not my first language so sorry if there's any mistake

Some of my favorite disability representation books:
    The Circus Train
A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Harper has cerebral palsy and it’s a beauty and the beast retelling)
Cinder (Cinderella retelling, she’s a cyborg)
An Ember in the Ashes (Izzy wears a eye patch)
    True Biz (deaf culture)
You, Me and Our Heartstrings (Daisy has cerebral palsy) (author has cerebral palsy)
Six of Crows (Kaz uses a cane) (author uses a cane)
    * all of these changes are written accurately (in my opinion and what I’ve heard from others) and are strong ❤️
    With love,
Someone who has cerebral palsy 💚

I would also like to add Gallant from v.e.schwab? Maybe a odd choice but the mc in it is basicly mute and can't talk ever since she was born. She sometimes uses sign language to comunicate with the people around her. As a deaf person myself I kind of saw myself in her. So that's why I would like to add that book lol

In regards to the diversity comment, I think many ppl forget that diversity doesn’t just mean diverse demographics. I’ve always looked at it in the light of ideas & experiences more so than simply somebody’s ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc. Obviously w diverse ideas & experiences comes diverse backgrounds as well since ppl of different backgrounds tend to have different experiences & will have a different outlook on life. All of these add up to a more well rounded story. Sure, relatability definitely can add to the enjoyment you get out of a story but I think many of us also read so we can experience & learn about a different side of life. Just bc somebody else’s story isn’t relatable to you, it doesn’t mean it's less important or less impactful. In fact, I’d say they’re even more important & more impactful as they offer us a unique perspective we wouldn’t get otherwise.

i've said this soooo many times and i'll say it again: i'd rather a book have no diversity than poorly written diversity that perpetuates stereotypes, especially harmful ones. it really boils down to (for me) what an author is trying to say with a character.
i've read so many books by white authors that make it SO CLEAR that a character was written to be a specific race/sexuality/what have you for the sake of diversity and nothing else. it's as if they just dropped in this character for one scene to be like 'look! i wrote a poc/queer character so you can all shut up.' and then they go back to the whities and never have that character speak again :(

I've thought about the topic of white authors' writing POC characters a lot. Especially as someone who is biracial reading characters of color from the point of view of a white author tends to be in my opinion heavily fetishized and relies on stereotypes.

If you're looking for a romance sub-plot where the characters meet in the first book, but nothing happens regarding their relationship in the first book + is also a enemies to lovers slowburn where they don't get together until like book 4 + has a really good fantasy plotline + has a lot of other loveable characters and other sub-plot romances also (including lgbtq)...You NEED to read the Falling Kingdoms Series by Morgan Rhodes 💖

  • @sheepinwolfsk1n
    @sheepinwolfsk1n Před rokem +2

my personal unpopular opinions is that i REALLY want more POC villains/antagonists in all entertainment but ESPECIALLY books. people are so afraid to write characters of color/characters of marginalized groups in position other than the hero or helpful best friend and it's getting... kinda boring. it's a slippery slope with these characters because its so easy for white authors/an author thats not apart of that particular group to meld in racial stereotypes with their villainy OR when their villain is the only POC in the book and becomes a representation for that particular group so i understand why authors are a little hesitant, but it'd still be cool to see more often.
my favorite example of this is actually from a show not a book but it's Isaac from Castlevania series, he's a black Muslim villain turned hero (eventually) who's culture and religion is directly tied to his philosophy around the acts he commits. his outlook is so interesting and something you don't see often in media and i'd love to read some books with villains like him.

Lovers to Enemies is the best trope that has two enemies in it.
Enemies to lovers and friends to lovers will always be better if its LGBTQ+
Nobody gives a fuck if you read classic literature or ya books, its honestly hilarious to watch toxic classic literature girlies and colleen hoover girlies bitch slap each other on TikTok.
    Malina>Darklina
    Rivals to Lovers>Enemies to Lovers
There isn't something as "Forced Diversity". I saw someone on Twitter say "This feels like forced diversity..." When Adiba Jaigirdar tweeted about her new book with an overweight girl with dark skin on the cover. (Like wtf)
NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE SPICE !!!

anyone have an opinion on this?
so im straight and when I end up reading romance books I always gravitate towards f/m romances. I read countless lgbtq+ books from other genres (fantasy, literary, memoirs) but have realized I've rarely been drawn to reading non-het contemporary romances and was wondering what people's opinions are on this? should I be trying to diversify what I read from the romance genre or is having a personal preference in this specific matter acceptable? would really appreciate thoughts on this from people!!

    • @august4132
      @august4132 Před rokem +2

I think it's normal for people to gravitate more easily to things that they can relate to, to be honest. I'm gay and most of my readings tend to be straight romance but i find more enjoyment in the occasional queer books i can find. So it's not weird or needs to change, it isn't really a big deal if you gave LGBT literature a chance and it didn't resonate with you and you shouldn't feel forced to, everybody has their own tastes and sometimes people like seeing themselves or project themselves into books and it would be hard to do that as a straight person with queer lit. Maybe someday you'll find something that you like in this category but don't freak out over it if you don't, much love ❤️

I totally see what you’re saying about diversity. But the connection I have with a book depends on how it’s written and how relatable they are to me. Can I slip into their skin? And it’s possible there’s implicit bias on my part. Thank you for making me more aware. ❤

i think diversity is very nuanced tbh but
    - i think we should just stop popularizing white authors who write abt white characters. like if we just stop buying into it the production will stop as well and we should just shed light on more poc authors who write about poc characters
    - having to choose between whether there’s no diversity and whether there’s misinformation is so horrible and legit the problem with everything 😭😭
    - the choice about no diversity is what i’d choose as well, but it bothers me when people say there’s no need for diversity at ALL because there does need to be. growing up without a character(s) that looks like you is something that can make everyone feel unseen.

2:39 i'm sorry, but this just sounds like you say it because reading is like an Occupation, or a Job, or a Side Hustle to you (idk if you make money from this channel). Reading is a hobby to 99% of readers. there is no bare minimum. there are no qualifiers to reading. if you only wanna read this one very specific thing, then it's your right to only read that very specific thing. setting goals and achievements and requirements for reading will only turn readers off and make them stop reading because at that point it's a chore and not a fun activity. there are mainstream things i have no interest in and there are diverse things i have no interest in when it comes to books, so i don't read either of them. reading is not activism, and it shouldn't have to be.
