    I still feel like I don't understand 100% of the whole process but I did learn one extra part of the puzzle thanks to this video (the way the back of the ripple actually get eroded). Thank you

      You are not alone .. CZcams: "Dune Migration" for time-lapse of cross-bedding in formation. Avalanching is a process where theres a build up of particles at the top and then they all fall down in one event; creating a layer on the slope; then another build up at the top and another avalanche; creating consecutive angular layers along the leeward slope. "sand ripples" on here brings up some very cool physics too, everything is waves....
