The fingering I mentioned is an alternate fingering for dire needs when the standard C# is not possible. Research the topic and you may find many alternate fingerings for very special times for many notes. It is a classic and known.

I first heard this as a teenager when we were given tickets to hear The Sacramento Symphony perform. To my extreme pleasure, we were treated to this masterpiece with guest artist Han de Vries performing. We were both somewhat younger then. I was captivated. Listening to this for the first time in many years brought back many happy memories.

Just got a call yesterday to play the accompaniment for a recital next week. When I heard the oboist was playing Strauss I cringed, sucked in a sharp breath through clenched teeth, and hesitantly said yes. Now I am listening to this for the first time ever. I haven't played through the accompaniment yet, but "it doesn't look so bad" ... (famous last words!). First movement only. Anyway, delighted to discover a new-to-me work by a beloved composer. The oboe also uses very little air to blow compared to other wind instruments which is why they can seemingly play so long. Sometimes we have to exhale air and inhale afterwards to get rid of stale air. But yes, circular breathing makes everything better.

This story comes from Fred Child of Performance Today. An American intelligence analyst (who was also and oboist) came upon the house of Richard Strauss in the closing days of WWII. He developed a relationship with Strauss. Later, he had the audacity to ask Strauss to write an oboe concerto. This is the result.
