- Learning how to hit a tennis one-handed backhand stroke with correct technique is much easier when you break it down into smaller steps. 🎾 Free One-Handed Backhand CONSISTENCY COURSE: www.feeltennis.net/1h-backhan...
That allows you to learn each chunk of the one-handed backhand technique much better and as you finally connect them all together your backhand will flow much smoother.
Here's a brief overview of the whole process where the first step is finding the right grip and the rest are 5 key positions of the whole one-handed backhand tennis stroke.
1. The Grip - we'll use a very simple method for finding the right grip without any thinking about bevels.
2. The Unit Turn - there are 3 checkpoints in the unit turn alone that help you get into the right position before you even start moving your feet.
3. The Backswing - there is not much of a backswing in the one-handed backhand but it's important that most of the work is done with your non-dominant arm.
4. The Uncoiling - most players miss the key wrist and racket head position in the uncoiling phase and lose on power so make sure you get this one right.
5. The Contact - we'll look at 3 key checkpoints of the contact phase and what is the role of the wrist.
6. The Follow-Through - The pros like Wawrinka often times hit a follow-through in a way that deceives your eye and we'll make sure you're clear on the correct follow-through position.
Learning how to hit a one-handed backhand tennis stroke is hopefully now a much easier process for you but do keep in mind that changing technique takes time.

Wow! Tomaz is a genius… he clearly articulates the biomechanics of the one handed backhand… every video he makes is well thought of… he puts in a lot of work and time in his productions. Thank you from California ❤
Wow, thanks, very much appreciated!
Best tennis coach on CZcams. Thank you very much!
agree. correct and detailed
100 percent
I can recommend the full one handed backhand course. Well worth paying for. It’s very good value.
Anybody wanting to hit a good backhand should watch this video. Thank you.
Agree best CZcams coach, thanks as always Tomaz.
Just the best explanation I ve never found on CZcams thanks a lot
my number one reference for back hand.. thanks
This is the best one handed backhand tutorial in CZcams.
Outstanding analysis. I loved his comments about prestretching the hitting arm and how to prevent over rotation by extending the non-dominant arm backwards.
"Spin with the arm, not the wrist." "One checkpoint is the vertical racquet." The best players at any club use this type of stroke. Thank you Coach.
The tip about pulling apart the racquet is the first time I've ever heard it. I always just had the hitting arm completely relaxed. Can't wait to try it. Super informative video.
This works. Before this, I spent many frustrating minutes hoping the right arm could do it alone. Priceless instruction.
Outstanding comments. The best tutorial for one hand backhand
Glad it was helpful!
Looking forward to trying what I watched. Thx oa lot
Best channel for tennis coaching. Thank you so much!

Quality coaching right here. I am playing at a 4.5 level now thanks to you!
Oooh, I am sure there were so many people waiting for this video! Thank you so much Tomaz!
Yes, I improved my backhand but it still so far from perfect ))
@@SomeOne-rh5so i wish i had your mindset, personally, if i don’t get something perfected in a few days, i get so so angry, and start thinking about how bad i am. my brain won’t take anything other than a tsitsipas level backhand
A big big and huge thanks from syria 🇸🇾 to coach Tomas from beginning to ending video i’ve been using wrong grip for one hand backhand therefore the ball goes in to crazy direction
Appreciate
Are you guys playing tennis 🎾 in Syria?
I will second that you are the best tennis coach on you tube. Very helpful. Can you give some tips on doubles? Womens doubles.
Thank you! I shared these tips at some point before and this is about the most I can do to help just with writing. For doubles the basic plan is simple:
SERVE - 70% down the T in order to prevent angled returns. The rest into the body and wide for surprise.
RETURN - 70% short cross court - aim at the intersection of service and singles side line. If you hit roughly in that area (plus minus 3 feet), the opposing net player cannot reach your shot with a poach. The rest of returns hit down the line and lob to keep the net player honest and not close in too much on cross court returns.
SERVER'S PARTNER - 70% of the volleys aim at the opposing net player. (5.0+ levels need to volley in the "hole", so between players). The rest of volleys in the middle or towards a weaker player.
RETURNER'S PARTNER - defend the middle and do the best you can, try to aim the ball towards the baseline player to gain time. That's it, that's most of the doubles strategy, the rest are smaller details. So it comes down to who executes the plan better...
Wow Tomaz is here again 👏👏. Thanks a lot 👍👍
Thanks to your videos, I made the 1HBH work. Oddly it worked so well that I realized I used all wrist and "brushing" on my forehand. The solid contact through the ball as well as the vibration and sound of solid contact with the addition of topspin of a correct 1HBH grossly pointed out the inadequacies of my forehand. Forehand is still being fixed.
Tomaž, thank you so much for this video. I've seen so many other videos on the OHBH and still felt lost. This video cleared everything up and today I was hitting shots that felt like I shouldn't have been able to hit.
Thank you so much! This video has been absolutely life changing
That is absolutely wonderful to hear, thanks a lot for the feedback!
excellent step wise tips
Good detail on Stan W's apparent body rotation. I admire his BH but have been working to eliminate inadvertent sidespin on my own ball.
AGAIN, KUDOS FOR GREAT, MOST VALUABLE TIPS AND PRESENTATION. MORE POWER!
Love your channel and videos! you have such a unique and fresh approach to teaching, very helpful thanks again Tomaz!
Very useful information for someone like me who is struggling with it. Thank you!
Very, very informative and helpful video! Thank you Tomaz.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Tomaz, deeply humbled.
I absolutely love hitting 1hbh!!!
I think your descriptions are clear and different. I learn so much from your tips. Where are you filming these tennis lessons? Thank you, Ann
Slovenia! ;)
Great tutorial! well done!
I play with a OHBH, and have watched a lot of online tutorials. Ive been waiting for Tomaz to do one as I knew there would be new elements he would cover to improve technique. And there is indeed. I like the bit about pointing your lead foot toward the ball and contact point, and the bit about keeping the wrist straight and imparting topspin via the forearm. Really nice clear video as ever. Lovely. thanks Tomaz
Thanks for the great feedback!
excellent video. thanks!
Great video. Explaining the forearm rotation is great. I made the mistake early on thinking the wrist rotation was key
An excellent video, thanks
Thank you very much chief!
Love it!!
Best coach !!!
Awesome Tomaz from Feel Good Tennis, so helpful. The 'double 45' technique is genius! Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
Hi Tomasz, thanks for all the videos. Is there an instructional video series for the two handed backhand?
Harika özet ve rafine bilgi...
Tennis is really an intriguing sport, isn't it? I always have decent 1HBH, but some days ago i lost because my backhand didn't show up. It was just a series of spinny shot without power. I came back to see some examples of wawrinka, and i just realized the one thing that is also said by Tomaz here. Spin from arm, not the wrist. Found out i tried to hit more topspin by flicking my wrist too much and failed miserably. Too much thinking of technique...
Excellent instruction!
I've always thought this technique is more for non-beginners. To constantly find that contact position is so difficult without the proper anticipation/footwork
Great video! Are you able to do the two-handed backhand in 6 steps as well?
Yes, the two-handed backhand video is scheduled soon, stay tuned...
Thanks again Tomaz, on dominant hand concept @6.02 made my day/rest of my life. How I can buy coffee for you?
Maybe "Join" the CZcams membership section, see Join button below every video... Tier 1 is just 3 dollars per month...
I still need to practice my footwork and contact points
I have been watching your videos for many years. But this latest video is very impressive indeed. Wow! The use of slow motion, stop action and the arrows provides a whole new level of understanding and precision. Bravo Tomaz! I do have a question regarding the back elbow. When we make that unit turn should we keep that elbow elevated....near shoulder level? Thanks in advance.
Thanks a lot! If you are a referring to the non-dominant arm elbow, then yes, it comes to about to the height of the shoulder because it's pulling the racket head back and up.
Thank you!
Hi Thomas, what should i be doing for a flat one handed backhand ? Cheers
Thanks coach. Excellent instruction. The trouble with my one-hander has always been lack of control. I have really good power but make way too many errors. The one-hander feels so natural to me but lately I have moved to a two-hander which gives me more control but feels completely un-natural and awkward. I love the one-hander but it drives me crazy making so many errors.
Check out the free one-handed backhand consistency course, the link is in the description!
@@feeltennis Will do. Thanks Coach!!
Excellent and great detail
Thanks Tomaz; what are the benefits of this one-hander over say the Macenroe flat/continental grip backhand?
Much easier to get topspin on the ball and easier to handle higher balls. And of course, much more comfortable for the wrist.
Thansk Tomaz, so grip you described is the same like knuckle on #1 ?
Yes!
Razumijes srbskohrvatiski? anyway thanks for fantastic videos ....:) :)
Hi Tomaz! Another great video. I find with the “extra 45” that this is an additional stretch after the unit turn and just before swinging towards the ball. Is that the right sensation? Someone else described it a bit like stretching a rubber band which is what it feels like to me. The issue I struggle with is when trying to add power how to stay side on. I don’t struggle staying side on for normal rally balls and stopping rotation but seem to open up too soon when applying pace. Thanks!
Yes, you should feed that stretch just before forward move. That stretch only happens when you relax a bit which is tricky because you are just about to hit the ball and most players tense up too early and get no power. It's a paradox, the more you forcefully engage, the less power you get. To get more power, focus on the legs and hip impulse. That will send energy up to the upper body and arms. Look for power from the ground up.
@@feeltennis brilliant! Thanks very much as always Tomaz!
