In all honesty, I had to stop watching awhile back precisely because he tends to ignore the bits at the edges that are not as clear-cut morally in order to maintain the narrative. Not a lot of grey areas on his show, but he does it better than most.

Bit of hindsight here: LWT did start with a bang with the skit on SCOTUS and the million-dollar offer to Clarence to go away.
Gotta give it to John Oliver in his season opener offering Clarence Thomas 1 million dollars a year for the remainder of either Thomas's or Oliver's life (whichever comes first) PLUS a bonus "condo on wheels" 2.4 million dollar motor coach TO STEP DOWN FROM THE SUPREME COURT AND NEVER RETURN. There's a photo of them at a four-person table at Cambridge Uni - Oliver, Ayoade, Mitchell, and another guy whom I've never seen identified but would be interested to know, probably a wealthy investment banker these days or something.
I've heard the civil war reenactment story before, but have never seen the clip. That's way funnier than I thought it was likely to be.

I just saw Oliver's season premier. You NEEEED to see it. This episode alone will win his next Emmy. Every challenge he has ever made on his show to anyone EVER has just been topped. The last five minutes of the show will have you picking your jaw off the floor!

I love Last Week Tonight. I made a Playlist of over 300 episodes that I have watched over a dozen times. I wish I was smart and funny enough to be his successor when he eventually retires, which hopefully won't be for at least 2 more decades.

the whole LastWeekTonight idea of taking one topic & diving deep into it, has been my favorite format for "show&tell TV" since i first saw *"Quarks&co with Ranga Yogeshwar"* (1993) here in germany when i was a little kid!
its a purely science program, but has exactly the same format as lwt! taking on topics, we always encounter in our lifes, but never really think deeply about, great stuff!

John and his wife met while she was hiding him and his crew from the RNC security that wanted to kick him out of the convention center. She was there with a veteran's group. I wonder how she leans politically now being married to John.
He's said that the group she was with were non-partisan and went to the Democratic Convention, too.
