  • In this Shelfside Review, we tackle the popular halloween themed game: Betrayal at House on the Hill, a thematic mansion crawler for 3-6 players, published by Avalon Hill and Wizards of the Coast (publishers of MTG or Magic the Gathering). In this b-movie inspired horror adventure game, players will play as explorers delving through a haunted house, drawing tiles to randomly generate the deck while playing. Then, when as omens are witnessed, there is the higher and higher chance for the Haunt to trigger, which is the second part of the game where one player is revealed to be a traitor, and then players play 1 out of 50 different scenarios as demons and all sorts of monsters are spawned. With pre-painted miniatures, multiple rulebooks, and even a new expansion out, we had to delve into this classic game.
    Is this role-playing, dice rolling horror adventure holding its ground, about 16 years later from its first edition publishing in 2004? Is it a good family game? Is the Widow's Walk expansion any good? Watch till the end and use our timestamps below to find out!

    Betrayal is special to me because it was my gateway game; it was the first to show me how far board games have come from the likes of Monopoly and Risk. There are definitely plenty of problems with it, but it's still one of my favorites.

      Monopoly is terrible but Risk is awesome. The key to playing Risk is trying the variant rules.

    I love early and late haunts. They can change the game. An early haunt can be hilarious as it's super easy for the traitor to win and it almost feels like a slasher movie. A late haunt can feel like Horror action as the players run around all the weapons and items and walk all over the traitor. I think it's parts of Betrayal's designing trying to err on the side of randomness to create unique stories.

    Based on y’alls opinions being nearly identical to mine on this game PLEASE give Betrayal Legacy a try. I have no doubt y’all will LOVE the game! Some of my favorite moments from gaming come from the legacy game (on par with my moments in BSG which is my favorite game ever).

    Your reviews are so on point. I always worry when I take this out for new players, or people new to board games, and HOPE they dont become the traitor b/c I know they will struggle with their new rulebook all alone

      Mman, I just haven't even thought of bringing out betrayal lately for this very reason. It's almost like I would take the extra time for DM'ing some type of horror one shot instead. But when Betrayal DOES work, its excellent! Cheers man! -Ashton

    "But phones during board games are a huge pet peeve of mine... Play Mansions of Madness." How are you playing Mansions of Madness 2E without an app? :) I'm just messing around. This is a great review.

    Want to balance out when the haunt happens? Use the “Haunt Roll” rules from Betrayal At Baldur’s Gate. The haunt absolutely can not happen too early.

      @@Shelfside I’ve seen 3rd edition at Target-it’s just an art change and maybe some component upgrades? I like the 2nd edition art more and already suped up my copy. 🙂

    Just got 3rd Edition in hands, about to open it up. Put YT on in background and this popped up, enjoyed the intro last time so figured have it play in back ground as opening box. Love most the intros, so much so even when I have not time to watch a full video, will still watch intro at least, then return to video later when have time. Thanks for all the effort.
    Edit: Ed3 is much the same as Ed2 with brighter tiles, altered rules, but the scenarios (tried 2 For Sale haunts) with faster haunt starts it gets to good bits sooner (much like Legacy), much of game borrows from Legacy, but the scenarios add much more then it first seems. Dice feel better. Minis, hit and miss, Mansions of Madness has better character minis, and the lack of paint makes them feel like unneeded cost/change. We liked it so far, and if fan of Ed2, Ed3 is just buy sequel, if never played Ed2 it still better start cheaper and some haunts are sequels to Ed2. But Legacy is best Betrayal but being a legacy game can put off some.

    I agree with anyone here who says try Betrayal Legacy: It is by far the best version of Betrayal to date!

  • @pickpocketpressrpgvideos6655

    I think 6/10 is about right. It's pretty fun/interesting, but the rulebook is poor, and last time we played we couldn't figure out how the haunt worked. Finding items is also very random (and not in a good way). I think less scenarios, with much clearer write ups, would be better if they ever do another edition.

    • @Shelfside
      @Shelfside  Před 2 lety +2

      I would personally love a 2nd edition of Betrayal... but I suppose that has been filled pu by betrayal at baldur's gate. Just have some bias here because of the theme and I own the expansion.
      The haunt can just be such a mess with casual players, also with all the hidden information! I've had so many games go really wackily with the item distribution ahah. Cheers! -Ashton

    Hi.
    I just found your channel and now I'm watching trough few videos of yours I'm interested in.
    I have the same opinion on this game as you (7 / 10 is realy fair).
    Do you know that there exists a legendary-Version of of Betrayal?
    I think it's just a bit better than this version (so 8 / 10).
    The best part about the legendary-Version is that you can play it after you finished the campaign.
    Sorry for my bad english.
    Keep up the great work!
    Greetings from germany

    how do you keep your character card clips from sliding all over the place ?? I can barely look at it without all the stat clips shifting.

    • @Shelfside
      @Shelfside  Před 3 lety +1

      I think they had some quality control issues there. Our copy doesn't have those clips sliding around, but a friend's copy in the past had the sliding. Paperclips help!

    I DO like this game for the most part EXCEPT the haunt. I've played 2 full playthroughs now, and both times people have come up with no rules for certain mechanics.

      yeah that has been a big bummer. We just got 3rd ed in our hands which hopefully will solve a lot of those wonky rules! Review coming soon -Ashton
