    DEFINITION:
    "A mini survival kit is a small survival kit which consists of the most essential outdoor survival tools and supplies which are the hardest to improvise or replace. A mini survival kit is intended to be carried along all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools carried along in a larger, separate bag. Other personal gear will primarily offer additional serviceability and ease of use, but the mini survival kit should provide for the basic needs of a survival situation, followed by self rescue, assistance, or a return to normalcy in optimum situations."
    My Urban Altoids "EDC" Tin (Version 2.1) is not designed as a standard "survival tin". While the items listed in the above description would be extremely beneficial in an outdoors emergency, the majority of items have little use for EDC (Every Day Carry) purposes in an urban environment. Instead of carrying a bunch of items that I would most likely never use on a daily basis, I redesigned my kit into more of a "convenience" that have a higher probability of actually being used in an urban environment. This would be an extremely poor kit to carry in the Amazon jungle, but highly beneficial to have at work, home, out of town travel and during errands in an urban environment.

      There's something that SAS survival guide can't teach you ! Real life wilderness experience. You( anyone ) can read a book about survival all you want but if you( the people reading survival guides ) and don't practice, apply that knowledge to real world wilderness experiences it pretty much does no good ! Because there's much more you will learn being out in the thick of it, applying what you know , you'll never learn the best, a better way to use the skills.

    I am a a bit of a "prepper" and love the outdoors. When I saw the contents of your EDC kit I wanted to be critical as they lack any of the every day items I use. As I patiently watched and waiting for the end of the video to post some critique or negative comment, I slowly began to realize the genius of your kit. You are just in a different type of forest or jungle than I typically am in. Yours is the concrete jungle/office. Your kit began to make perfect since to me. I realized I was the one lacking the preparation. So I am going to make a nice little city tin like yours, and honestly looking forward to it. For all the Armchair survivalists bashing the video, they just lack the intelligence to sit through something that doesn't make since to them long enough to try to see the other persons point of view. Afraid to learn something... I learned a lot from this. Thanks for posting!

    I used to have little kits like this. I'm older now and have found that coming up with solutions on the fly saves pocket space and promotes ingenuity. If I had a handy kit for problems I have each different day, the kit would have to be different each day and still be big as a 5 gallon bucket. Just prepare your mind by being smart and you won't have to waste your pocket space.

      It's not wasting space by keeping a small tin of items in pocket. You're only limiting your ability to deal with situations the less gear you have on you. That's up to you, but don't tell others they're wrong for wanting more options to work with. I say each individual chooses what they want, some less, some more. I prefer more options, within the weight and size I can put up with on a daily basis. Some people carry less than you, would you listen to them and leave home with nothing in pockets? 🤔😋

      HAHA! But really, lace up your boots with 20 FEET of 550 PARACORD!!!
      I laced up each boot with one end of a 10' length of 550 paracord (1100 was too thick) & with the rest of the paracord I braided it with a series of slipknots & tucked this braided excess under my paracord laces. The very last end of the braided paracord is used to finish lacing/tying up my boot. Now when I need cordage I can momentarily untie my "paracord shoestring" & from only one end, pull out as much as I need, cut it off & still be able to re-tie my shoelaces! So with the exception of my dress shoes & one pair of tennies, I walk around everyday with 20' worth of 550 paracord & unless people take a close look, no one ever really notices.

      brasstrombone9 I figure it goes with the territory of making CZcams videos. I usually check out the channels of people who "give me sh*t" and I have never found one where they too post videos. I feel that those that actually make videos to upload on CZcams have a good understanding of the amount of work that goes into creating one, especially ones that require a lot of planning, and therefor see things from a wider frame of mind (such as yourself). Sure, I would not expect everyone to want the exact same contents as I do. However, I feel that the organization and strategy could be leveraged towards custom tins of their own. So in the end, I usually take the extreme negative feedback with just a grain of salt. :)

    I used to carry a Swiss Army Spartan knife -- very basic, large blade, screw driver, awl, toothpick and tweezers, I think. And a cork screw. The latter seems a bit esoteric, right? Then one day I was at a small conference that had a reception at the end of the day, with beer and wine provided by the organizers (not catered). I was chatting with another attendee when I heard someone call out, "Does anybody have a cork screw?" About 40 people laughed and shrugged their shoulders. As I walked over and handed them my Spartan, they were amazed...and I had quite a few new wine-drinking pals.
    A couple years back I was the only one on my floor of about 20 offices who had a small flashlight ( 2AA Mini-Mag) when the power failed. All my brief cases/"man purses" and computer bags have a flashlight. Why wouldn't you?
    The point is, EDC is a very personal thing. No one has to be a death's door from lack of a paper clip to make it a simple, useful tool to have when needed. Yes, I was a Boy Scout. "Be prepared" is about mindset. It is as much about learning to think (or more) than it is about what gear you have stashed away. BTW, my key ring has a Micra on it and a micro flashlight.
    Those who believe pre-thinking your possible daily requirements for handling small problems is somehow paranoid are "non-thinkers." They will be the first to piss and moan when they can't open their wine...and will be the first to trip over each other in the dark when the lights go out.

If you are in an european city and your car rans out of gas, you can actually either put some liters into the tank or if you're hungry, 1500 yen (3 relatively flat coins) in japan get you a very very generous lunch. So this is not as useful in the USA anymore to hide coins. (:

    Thank you for this. I really want to say this is a good video for people. This kit is put together for real use. Mini Survival kits are nearly useless just due to the fact that 99.9% of people will never be in a survival situation. But nearly every one may get a splinter, need to sew on a button, or get caught in a room where the lights can go out during a storm. This is a great kit that should point people in a more realistic direction.

If shit hit the fan or got to the point where you need a moral support picture of your son those numbers, USB etc wouldn't work. The mini Leatherman deleted the need for 3 of the things you have in the tin and opened up space for other things. You should look in to maybe putting mini chem lights in your tin as well That flashlight won't last forever. Also in your smaller tin, maybe some water purification tabs for that off chance that you are in an SHTF situation and you need water. I don't know about you, but I ain't drinking the water in DC. I'd drop the quarters though. In an emergency situation you're not gonna need to worry about putting money in a vending machine. In my tin I have fishing hooks and a few small sinkers. I wrapped some small 2lb test line around the outside of the tin and then covered it with electrical tape. Just my $.02.

      Hey Cliff,
      Listen I just had something come up here at home with my mother and it made me think it would probably be a good idea for you to share this with your followers. You see my mother is prescribed several medications for a condition she has that mimics Diabetic Neuropathy. This means a couple of the meds she is prescribed are heavily regulated narcotics. Thing is, my mother like so many others carries so back up meds with her at all times in her purse in a little zip lock baggy. All the time not realizing if she were to be caught with these without her prescription she would go to jail. I don't think a lot of people realize that, and I know many people carry back up medication with them in various forms. Perhaps it would be a good idea to share this with your followers to inform them as well. Having been a state constable here years a ago I knew this and thought it was common knowledge, but it appears not. Have a good one! =)

    I think we all should have bought stock in Altoids prior to going public with this updated era. I really wonder what the impact of "prepper' purchases have been on their sales? lol keep up the good work.

    This is pretty awesome, but I have a two word suggestion. Word economy. This could have been a 5 minute video. You'd get a lot more response if it were shorter.

    Great kit!! I suggest adding a small spool of kevlar thread, a handcuff key and some snare/garotte wire. Could also add a couple water tabs and a couple Tylenol if you have room.

    I thought there would be an even smaller tin inside the little one. Tins all the way down.

    I have a question, why take up the space with matches when you already have a bic lighter, instead of matches you could put a couple more nails in or like a small band-aid

    Wire-core tie wraps, the kind that they use to tie cords in packaged electronics would be a good addition. They can be bent and compacted to fit in whatever space is left, and help cut down the rattling.

    Don't you get sick taking all those items out for just a toothpick, or a USB cable or anything in that tin for the matter? If I had that I would just wait till I got home for a nail clippers instead of wasting time taking everything out, getting what you need, then having to put everything back in. I just don't see it as a practical use, it will just waste your time. How do you deal with that?

      I have some only for emergency so i won't open them.
      For EDC i dont fill them up too packed.
      It will keep some things uncrushed and you know where it is always...
      Need a light? In the box in my pocket. I always know where it is and if i have it with me.
      Some things like fire, light, rope. I work alot with rope and boxes so a small knife is fine to put in because i use it often...

    My wife just got me a Victorinox SwissCard for my birthday. I think it would be perfect for a survival tin. I also think a Newman's Own mint tin makes a better container as the lid is flat and the tin itself is slightly larger.

      +tetsubo57 Yeah, I have the lite one. And it fixes the need for tweezers, pen, and a flashlight found in this video. Although I'm guessing it is better be kept in the wallet rather than a tin like this.

    • @tetsubo57
      @tetsubo57 Před 8 lety +1

      +Anton Adelson The problem with that is the plastic can suffer stress over time. My old one broke. I made a guard for my new one to prevent that from happening again. In a tin it would be safer.

    • @AntonAdelson
      @AntonAdelson Před 8 lety

      tetsubo57 May I ask you where you keep your wallet? The reason for this is because I keep my wallet in a bag and I imagine it'd go through a lot more stress if it was kept in my pant pocket. Especially the back one.

      @AntonAdelson Před 8 lety +1

      +tetsubo57 I'm guessing a cargo pocket is different from what I've just said.

      Small price to pay when you really need a Snickers! lol. No, but seriously, putting it all back is no problem if you're trapped in a collapsed parking garage and really need a tiny light because your cell phone was smashed. Just saying.

    There are some really great ideas in your video. Well done and I've incorporated a lot of them. The second tin idea is great. I added a paper ruler (free from IKEA) to wrap the nails, string and matches into a bundle. Thanks!
