    The decals were made by www.caingraphics.com If you need decals or any other design, message them! They do great work!
    For your consideration this week, I have a vintage pedal trike that was made by the Mattel Toy Company in 1964. They named it the "Vrroom X-15". It's rear wheel steer that's controlled by one control stick. The name "Vrroom" comes from a feature that you can select to add a "motor" type sound that comes from the front wheel. This restoration took 6 days, with 7 hours of editing.
    My Grandson "little Gene" got to test drive it for me to be sure all the functions worked. He's excited to see how many people are going to see him ride the X-15! This build was a lot of work. I hope you all like the final product. If you had one of these as a child, please leave a comment about it below! Thanks for watching!
    Best Regards
    RS

    Thank you for sharing your restoration! I am just starting the restoration of the X15 that I got for Christmas in 1964. My decals on the front side and at the VRROOM control are in pretty good shape, so I am going to clear over them. Other than that, your reassembly will be invaluable when that time comes for me.

      My dad bought me one if those for christmas about 1969?
      It was the year the Big Wheel tricycle cam out. He thought they were "plastic pieces of crap." So he bought me an X-15.
      The 69 mode (?) of mine had solid steel wheels with hard rubber tires. I remember because we literally road that thing so much the tires fell apart. Did looked everywhere but could not find replacement tires.
      I remember coming home from school, watching Batman on TV at 3:30, then going outsixe and riding my X-15 "batmobile."
      I want to say that mine was black with red wheels. Of course, dad might have well bought a used one and painted it.
      It had a noise-maker "motor" that 'broke.' Probably a combination of dead batteries and parents who were sick of listening to it. lol

    That opening was almost as awesome as the restoration. I remember seeing one of those at a garage sale years ago as a child. My mother wouldn't buy it because one of the wheels was a bit bent, and no one in my family was skilled at repairing things.
    Instead I received a riding toy that you sat in the middle of and turned the large wheels on either side to make it go. I can't remember the name of it, it was either made by Mattel or Ideal. Not likely to ever find one since it was almost all plastic. I got two summers out of mine before I literally wore the wheels out.
    This appears to be your biggest project to date, but it was well worth the effort.

    Nice refurbish effort. Looks neat, as we used to say. One idea for future projects, any time you use Rustoleum or any Acrylic Enamel based paint similar to that, add some Magic Catalyst Hardener and the shine will be very much improved, but it also hardens the finish to be more scratch and mar resistant. And solvents (oils, gas and lacquer thinners and such) won't effect the finish either. Some really good stuff. Nice project, you should be proud if it. Thumbs Up!

    It was probably thickly power coated. The TV show American Restorations had to deal with the same problem but on a wagon mounted 300+ gallon water tank. You actually pulled through and stripped your trike and it ended up great. What made you pick Aluminum as the color instead of the original metallic Teal? I hoped you at least kept the original seatbelt buckle... maybe turn it into an actual belt buckle.

    Great job and video! You went to the extra effort to have decals re-made, I liked that. One note. You could have had an auto body shop paint the parts. They could have matched that multi-depth silver/blue paint and might have even baked on the enamel. But your paint job was great. Are you sure those big back wheels were not original (for easy steering)? I have a photo of me on mine when I was 7 years old - somewhere. I remember I stuck a Lincoln Log piece in the tail pipe.

    • @RustyShepherd
      @RustyShepherd  Před 2 lety

      The back wheels were definitely not original. I researched what the correct one were. Having a body shop paint it, would have taken the enjoyment out of restoring. It also would have been costly. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video!

      @paulromsky9527 Před 2 lety +1

      @@RustyShepherd Yes, I see too now the smaller wheels were stock. I am sure it was fun restoring it yourself. If I had a son, I would have restored one, I am 59 and no kids... so not in my cards. If we did have kids, they would be taught to take care of things. I had good parents and a lot of love in the home, but they never seemed to care if I tore apart my toys after a year or so. If I still had that X-15 when I was a child, I would be handing down to my grandchildren by now - stressing how certain things are family heirlooms. I am an engineer, I am sure my children would know how to protect and restore our heirlooms - and be taught to be handy. When I was 3, I got my first tricycle. The first thing I did was flip it over, turn the wheels and study that magnificent machine that was mine. It was an hour before I began to ride it...my parents just looked in amazement. It is one of my earliest memories... I can still recall that time in great detail - it was bright candyapple red with white spokes, white seat, red handles, red and white streamers, chrome handle bar, pedal cranks, and front wheel fender. I remember seeing the square adjusting bolt on the seat shaft and asking my dad to adjust it for me.

I don't happen to know when they went from the baked on porcelain to powder coating and the like on appliances. I've never heard of industrial enamel being used on appliances, but I suppose it could be. Mostly it's a powder coating somewhat like the baked on porcelain, but not porcelain. I don't know what it is. some kind of polyester and urethane I think..however the process is much the same as doing a porcelain coating, but porcelain takes higher heat to melt than powder coating. That's actually one reason back in the day most appliances were white, it was the cheapest porcelain to use. My Grandson asked if I could make it more “plane” like. He was the test pilot, so I did as he asked. RS

    This was more of an amateur refurb attempt. It does look better than when he started, but the work wasn’t detailed enough to call it a restoration. Wrong wheels, color change, did not remove road rash, or dents. The decals were not in alignment with the seams..... not a lot to praise on this work except it looks better than it did when he started.

      It is an amateur restoration. I’m not a professional. I get better as I go from project to project. RS

      The wheels are correct. The spoked wheels were wrong.

    You really should get someone else to do the bodywork and spraying! You are clearly no good at it! You are happy with a poor finish so really shouldn't be doing this.

      Geez. I’m still learning as I go. I’m not a professional paint and body tech. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes time to get good at anything. RS

      @@RustyShepherd You go to all that trouble to prepare it, and let the poor finish go by. If it don't look perfect, make it so! You have the skills, just don't be happy with a poor finish!
