T.J. Watt Defensive player award snub highlights busy Steelers news week

- Joe is back with a post-NFL Honors edition of the Steel City Underground Podcast.
As yinz are aware by now, T.J. Watt was snubbed by voters for the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. Joe has A LOT to say about why it was an awful decision and how Watt is a generational talent who deserved the accolade.
Also, there were some awards handed out that appear to be out of line in addition to Watt's snub. Joe covers these, plus a couple of other wins for the Steelers at the awards ceremony and two new offensive coaching hires that flew under the radar during a busy end-of-week news cycle for the franchise.

theyve totally devalued the award
They made it clear for months that Garrett was going to be the DPOY. How on earth do you decide before the season is even half way done who the best players were? So its not just de-valued, its totally illegitimate and completely meaningless.
They’ve totally devalued a lot of the NFL for the real fans but there’s more Sunday only fans than us real football guys

We need to have another legitimate company other than PFF to do statistical analysis
The stats are available to the public. What PFF does is "valuation" and it's proprietary... This, only interpreted by them. Anyone can do straight statistical comparison... And more should. Including PFF. Grades are BS
It’s going to be sweet when Myles has a break out season (assuming he can) and they give dpoy to some mediocre player because “he hasn’t won it yet”.
Cleveland will collectively loose their minds.
I cant wait til a player gets low-balled on a contract and he's pissed, and he goes to the team and he's like "But I did this, and this....I lead the league in this and that!" And they say to him "Yes, and we're very happy with all of that, but your PFF score was only THIS!" And the player looks at them and says "Legit. I'll accept that contract!" Glad you're angry Joe, this is a fucking travesty!
Congrats Myles on your virtual season! You were so great you didn't even need to turn up for the second half of the real Season. You certainly earned DPOY with your almost-got-there stats over the four or five other guys that actually DID STUFF ON THE FIELD like sacking the QB way more than you did!! Way to go PFF you showed us!!!

Someone mentioned on another podcast that maybe the NFL is tired of the Watt brothers getting so many accolades. Who knows. TJ Watt definitely knew. Steelers Nation is upset but life goes on. Til next time

We all agree its obvious, ridiculous, robbery & few other adjectives.
What I see nobody say, is this:
Choosing Myles Garrett was for purpose:
1) Irritate the Steelers fanbase thus given a long narrative that will NOT end. Even when the '24 season begins, it will still be in all conversations Steelers. When a more important discussion topic is staring us in the face. I get it! I wee this as bfuscation right now. Maybe blessing in disguise. I believe, most important right now is signing Rudolph. If Mason is/was larger topic #1, hs price MIGHT rise beyond what franchise wishes to pay & that would be MUCH more detrimental to the '24 season than TJ Watt missing out on DPOY.
2) Browns franchise needs something to be happy about - after 50 years devoid of a title.. I GIVE THEM THIS.
Myles Garrett was handed a pity award.. thats all it is.. and you hit the nail square on the head - the "advanced metrics" or "PRWR" is a bunch of bullshit - it was made up, for players like Garrett who don't get home.. the 1 true metric to winning against a pass rush, is a sack or TFL.. if you aren't getting both? then you are aren't beating the pass protection, plain and simple.. i fully believe that with a lot of these award, they didn't wait until the end of the season - their minds were made up halfway through, and they just stuck with it..
Youre forgetting or you dont have enough courage to acknowledge the most important stat that trumps all other stats....Myles Garrett is black and TJ Watt is white. If it were the other way around...Black TJ Watt would have won and a white Myles Garrett wouldnt have even been in the conversation. If TJ can darken up his skin for next season...maybe he will have a legitimate shot at DPOY.
Man, I hate to say it, hate to even think the league has sunk so low, but you really might be right. DEI bullshit. Because if not, then how does an unofficial, outside, made-up stat determine who the DPOY is?

Our power as people are limited as long as this goes on. Myles Garrett knows why he won that award and he should be ashamed of himself, ashamed of his lack of morals for accepting that award.
