    1st of May is Penstemon day is the old saying when you cut your penstemons down. Never failed yet. Have got numerous different penstemons and in 50 years never lost a single one. Also my keep green all year, even when had the beast from the east a few years ago. Yes a little brown around the edges but mostly green. We live in a very exposed windy area and l don't cut my flower stems off, so l have some flowers basically on them until May. Maybe l they don't suffer from windrock as they are in a clay soil but l can see why you might want to implement that prosess you suggest if you have a loose soil. I have as l said all types the bigger thicker leaf types and the thinner leaf types and so far after all these years everyone of them has been fine.
