  • Welcome back to another sew along! This one is a bit of a “bonus” sew along. I hadn’t planned on doing this one, but had some requests for how to do the placket on the M7357 top I was going to make for my current mini capsule. I just decided to go ahead and film as I sewed! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

    I love this blouse! I know, late to the party, however, I have this pattern. I originally had it in my Destashify pile. Not anymore. Rummaged in my huge stash, found perfect material for it and I’m getting ready to sew it up next week. Thanks.

    Again…I have a McCall’s dress pattern that has a facing like this and when I followed the instructions, which were to sew the uninterfaced facing on first, sew the interfaced facing onto that, and turn the interfaced facing inward, it looked so bad that I ended up tossing the project. This is along the lines of what I was planning to do the next time around. This makes so much sense. Somehow you just know what I’m having trouble with and already have a solution ready

    Hi, great make. Just a hint for the tab is to reverse the process and see the facing on tab on the wrong side. You just get a clean seam line on the out side. It's a very fiddly way to see that, the pattern makers really have to make it hard sometimes

    Great video. This pattern caught my eye for the body shape. But, i HATE that one must wear a camisole due to the plunging neckline. My thought is to use the pattern primarily for for the body shape. I'm thinking of eliminating the band/placket completely.
    Here is my idea: eliminate the placket, add the placket width to the pattern pieces, make the neckline a modest V-neck or U-shape neckline (finish the neck to your taste with binding). For the fabric, I would use a lightweight drape-y knit.

      Chris Paddock commented that you could use something different for that area to embellish it and make it a feature, which I think would be lovely. One of the views of the pattern has you using ribbon to highlight some of the seams, so you could use that to make it a feature as well. I think I will probably make this again in a solid. I really like the fit!

    Hey Whitney - arent you on fire!!! Love this top on you, I think the fabric is amazing for this top! Sorry to hear about your tummy problems - if you suffer with gastro issues, it may well be worth you trying the supplement D-Limonene. For 6 months now I've had AWFUL acid reflux including massive amounts of pain on my left side and have been taking acid reducers, which left me anaemic. A bit of a nightmare really! Anyway, I started D-Limonene 9 days ago, and within 5 days I was able to come off the medication and now feel little to no pain. I've been doing research on it (and I;d recommend doing that if interested) and it seems to help people with all different kinds of gastric issues. I dont know why its not more widely known really! Anyway, take or leave my advice but thought it might be of some help x

    Do you think there is any reason NOT to sew the placket ends to the tab towards the inside? It seems like you could do that instead of having all the raw edges to the outside. Then maybe serger across those raw edges on the inside and the outside would be clean.

    Whitney, can you do a tutorial on how to adapt a pattern from a dropped sleeve to a fitted shoulder seamed sleeve? I have super thick biceps and that seam across with a drop sleeve adds too much attention in my opinion and many of the patterns I love have the dropped sleeve. As for the top you made in the video, could you finish the bottom of the neckline by sewing the each side of the neck edge to the bottom tab front sides together then just top stitch after you've serged the edge to finish them? I think it would finish nicer than the added tab, but that's just my opinion.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      Hey, Cecile! As far as the front of the shirt, if what I’m imagining is what you’re saying, then I think, yes, you could do that and it would be a nicer finish. I really love this finished top, but was not crazy how they had you finish that front edge. As far as the dropped shoulder, i completely get where you’re coming from on that. I have large biceps and have similar issues. Unfortunately, going from a drip shoulder to a set in sleeve would require drafting a whole new sleeve (for the sleeve cap) and is a bit intense for my little tutorials. You may want to check out Suzy Furrer on Bluprint, though. She has great pattern drafting classes where you might be able to reverse engineer something!

    I’d love you to discuss pants fitting. By this I mean in terms of style of pants. For example, the ginger jeans would have zero ease around the crotch length and fit close to your body. What about the Jenny trousers by closet case? You have just made the shorts did you alter to fit more closely? I’m just fitting my pair and I’m struggling with the front rise/ length and where it should hit. Dungarees need more length but pants don’t. Do you have any rules? I have the pants for real people book and they give some guidelines but I’d be interested in your views on fitting the various styles.. Hope this made sense!

      I can definitely talk a bit about that in the trouser sew along. Send me an email: tomkatstitchery@gmail.com and I can give you my thoughts on the Jenny!

    do you do gathering pitches at all or do the feed dogs do all the work when setting in sleeves? Thank you for this sew a long. I hope you are feeling better.

      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      I don’t do any ease stitches in the sleeve cap. The feed dogs do all the work!

    When is it best to do a set in sleeve vrs a flat sewn in sleeve, which I prefer.
    Thank you! Dee

      I will honestly do a flat sleeve anytime that it’s possible (which is most times) on tops. I do sew jacket and coat sleeves in, in the round.

    Whitney, when you trimmed your seams to 1/4”, do you grade them and does it matter if you understitch before or after the trimming?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety +1

      I usually only grade when I’m using heavier fabrics. It doesn’t really matter when you trim, but I think it’s easier (and less likely to cut into something you don’t want to cut) if you trim and then understitch.

      Not off the top of my head, but delicate details like that are VERY "in" for Spring. If you do find something, let me know because I would be very interested!

    Did you move the dart down 1 inch? I love your videos and will be making this top.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      I didn’t touch the dart on this one since I was using D cup pattern pieces, but it could use a bit of a drop for my next iteration. I might lower it by 1/2” for next time.

    Did you prewash your material? I've bought the same and am now getting ready to sew with your tutorial. Can you also tell me your needle size? Thank you so much!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 4 lety

      Yes I do! With my rayon, I wash and dry it in the machines and then going forward will wash the garment in the machine on a delicate cycle and then hang to dry. I usually use a size 10 universal needle for my lighter weight rayon’s. A Microtex needle (also size 10 or 11) is also fantastic for rayon!

      @@TomKatStitchery I'm excited to begin this blouse M7357 and hope,it turns out as well as yours. Would a microtex needle in a 10 work? I've only sewn with Rayon once before and I remember the yoke shifted a bit on me, so a little nervous but I'll crack on!

      @TomKatStitchery  Před 4 lety

      Dolores Murphy yes, a Microtex 10 needle would be great! If your nervous about the shifty rayon, you can always carefully iron the washed yardage with spray starch. It will keep everything much more stable while you sew and then it will just wash out when you’re finished!

    • @TomKatStitchery

      No. A lighter weight tencel would work great. I would steer clear of any tencel twills, but a shirting tencel would be lovely!

    What size pattern do you cut out? I heard you say that some times you don’t do a full bust adjustment. Please I need your help.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      I cut out the size 14 with the C cup pieces (this pattern is a custom cup size pattern). My upper bust is 36" so that's why I picked the 14. My full bust is 39" at the moment so the 3" difference put me into the C cup pieces. Because this is a custom cup size pattern and contains the different pieces for the different cup sizes, I don't have to do an FBA. For any other pattern, I really need to do an FBA (usually a 1" FBA so 1/2" on either side). That's one of the reasons I LOVE the custom cup size patterns, it's one less pattern adjustment I have to do!

    Hello Whitney. I thought you said in your last video that your email address was in the about page but I didn’t find it. If you don’t mind sharing it with me I would love to be able to talk privately. It sounds like we have some of the same health issues. My stomach has been distended for 2 weeks. I am on Facebook and messenger. Thank you so much for the video on mental health. God bless you. Elizabeth

    Thank you Whitney for this SewAlong. I bought the pattern and then found this video and your channel. I'm now a subscriber and I bought the Butterick shirtdress pattern and plan to follow along. Thanks. This McCall's blouse was fun to make, however my efforts took much longer. I've returned to sewing after a very long hiatus (over a decade) and it's like starting over. Thanks for the burrito method technique. I used it and it's so clever. Here's my review and thanks again for posting your tutorials -- so helpful and fun! sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/168245
