      Point being that spending money without knowing what to do. WILL NOT make you go faster. A lighter wallet not always mean a faster car! That's for sure.
      Examples: Since when $400 in a short sifter will make you faster?!
      Or the added weight of "stiffeners", or the ~$2000 and added weight of fat tires and wheels or the >$2000 on seats,... One could LITERALLY remove the OEM passenger seat at cost zero. For the same or better weight gains!
      All that can (and do) make for the look and feel of that car. Not for it's performance on track.
      These are quite obviously mods for enhancing CZcams performance. Not necessarily the car performance on track! The ridiculous choices are quite evident. A fraction of all that and it could have excellent brakes and cooling system.

    • @kylefultz
      @kylefultz Před 3 lety +23

      crpth1 those aren’t good examples at all. Wider wheels and better tires may add weight but depending on the brand and way they were made they are probably the same weight as oem if not lighter while also providing more grip. At streets off willow with a lot of sweeping fast turns grip is very much needed. Stiffening the chassis makes a car faster hence why every exotic, track focused car comes with a carbon fiber body and some come with a roll cage, for example the gt3 and gt2 rs Porsche. Look at a stock Miatas lap times and then look at a spec miatas lap times there is a reason race cars have wide wheels, stiff chassis, hard suspension and race seats.

The old Miata's were known for that connector have its sheathing fall apart over time and/or corrode.

I simply forgot to plug the wiring holder back into the support and it swung loose and made contact. The way that the gauges go out after a time, makes me think it's something similar where the wiring is moving around, making contact, and shorting out. Just my 2 cents.

  • @sevegarza
    @sevegarza Před 3 lety +330

    On a track that "shouldn't be a very big breaking track" it sounds like the main thing that would reduce lap time is more power. Almost all mods made to the car made it heavier and didn't add power. The car may feel better, be more planted, and be more fun to drive with all the chassis stiffening and suspension tuning... But unless you're able to translate that to significant gains in cornering speeds (to make up for the slower acceleration due to increases weight) you've probably made the car slower, at least for this particular track (Willow Springs).
    To significantly reduce a hot lap time on a budget = Become a better diver (that alone might get you in the minute 30's) + sticky tires + turbo. Sure, chassis flex, body roll, and a bouncy suspension will be a pain to deal with and you'll be always on the edge of spinning out on every corner. It will probably take a few attempts to get that good lap time without spinning out. The car will still have it's over heating issue so you'll need to go on a cooler day and take breaks between hot laps. If you were building a car that can reliably and consistently put down fast lap times during a full track day/race then ya, you'll want to invest in those other things especially getting some more cooling.

    • @Davesky_1
      @Davesky_1 Před 3 lety +32

      exactly, probably the turbo + slicks would do way more than all of these upgrades, those could work on a really technical low speeds track with lots of weights shifting in sharp turns; also imagine spending 10000$ worth of upgrades and not be able to finish one fast lap, poor Zach

    • @JSLEnterprises
      @JSLEnterprises Před 3 lety +12

      @@Davesky_1 the turbo kits available for the Miata only boost ~10lbs (otherwise you'd need a rebuild of the B6 engine - 1.6l that comes with his Miata as well as standalone engine management system, and bigger injectors). If he were to get a (BPT 1.8L DOHC) and swap it out - pretty easy to do with a Miata, just a little fabrication for the exhaust and stock engine harness rewire - would get you stock 180hp @7lb boost with the BP26 ecu, which can then be brought up to about 280hp @ 14lb boost if you replace the little ihi turbo and replace the ecu with megasquirt and the flap based air flow meter can be swapped to the afm from a Mazda KLDE 2.5L v6 (found in MX-6's, and Ford Probes of the same era). I’m a bit down on my luck today. It’s my birthday and someone did a hit and run on the rear of my Miata earlier today on my way to work. Watching you guys build the Miata is giving me the spirit to fix up mine. We’ll see how it goes 💖

      I know. N all the idiot comments on here bout how he don't know nothing bout cars. Lol I bet half of them don't even have a liscense but are so quick to judge. Atleast he keeps it real and doesn't lie about the results. He could have said he beat the record. But he didn't so ppl stop being ignorant n let him do his thing

    $9500 in mods mostly focused on handling when the mission is to go faster on a power track? You have invested poorly.
    The tires, roll bar and seats were good. The rest of the time and effort should have been engine upgrades like radiator, reversing coolant flow, and turboing to optimize power for the mission.

    • @JDARJISJ
      @JDARJISJ Před 3 lety +32

      @Bailey Hatfield for most cars I would agree and a little stiffening is fine even in a Miata but he added a bunch of weight stiffening the car. I used to go mountain driving in a bone stock ‘92 and it could hold its lane perfectly at 60mph in 20mph hairpins. The Miata is a momo car that to drive well you learn to keep you speed up. The curves on that track are not much of a problem for a stock Miata. What he needed to do was drop his power to weight ratio but most of his mods increased it. Not smart.

      @brokeboybrando288 Před 3 lety +20

      Except he’s obviously not done with the car and he’s preparing to dump a shit ton of money into the car so yes the smartest thing before you upgrade the shit out of your power is to make sure with absolute certainty your car can handle it which is what he did so no he didn’t waste his money

    • @JDARJISJ
      @JDARJISJ Před 3 lety +17

      @BrokeBoyBrando I never said he wasted his money, what I would say is he failed to optimize his spending towards his goal. For the way I would drive the car I actually agree with most of what he has done.
      However his goal is improving his time on a specific track that is more about power than handling. He didn’t prioritize his mods towards that goal. At best I would say this track outing was premature, which is proven by his cooling problems.

      @danielsnell7605 Před 3 lety +1

      I think he's building it all from the ground up, he's gonna get there. Zach was mostly trying to see how a good set of handling upgrades will improve time. Obviously power upgrades will, so he's taking it from a different poiint of view

    Definitely coolant re-route and radiator, and DO AN UNDERTRAY!! I overheated HARD in the mountains at 97* temps with my intercooler-blocked crossflow radiator until I put an undertray on and the overheating was instantly fixed.

    Great effort! This is the essence of car racing. Making a reliable race car is tough.
    There might be a harness problem that causes a short circuit under certain vibrations / g forces. This will require a lot of patience to pinpoint…
    Just… please don’t have unrealistic expectations about the laptime gain.
    Beating that record laptime, even if it was set on a stock miata, is a great accomplishment that may require lots and lots of training laps on that circuit, definitely better brakes, and lots of wasted brake pads / tire sets. Don't expect any mod (that is reasonably safe) to bring you at the 1:30 range automatically.

    • @Moondragon
      @Moondragon Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed. Bummer he couldn't have done a lap with a stock Miata and then compared against it. Even making it five seconds within the range of the record would probably take some serious driving.
