The Country's OLDEST...The LEOLA PRODUCE AUCTION in Lancaster County Pennsylvania

  • In the mid 1980's produce farmers in Lancaster County were looking for a better way to sell their produce. The Leola Produce Auction was the result. Today, buyers from up and down the Mid-Atlantic come here to buy fresh produce to stock their markets, stands, and restaurants. The foresight of these farmers has encouraged 70 other produce auctions to be opened across the country.

    Very Much Organized and Farmer Centric. Great People Hard work Well Appreciated. Njoyed Every Bit of This Clip. Farmers Get Their Sweat Worth and Buyers Get Their Business Worth . Great Synchrony.

    My uncle back in the 90s had a large garden and took small box lots to the sale. He grew the large pole lima beans, restaurants would buy them.

    I have never been to one but would totally go to a produce auction. I’m allergic to tropical fruit so it’s nice that these are even an option.

    This was great, thank you very much! I love the seeing the Leola auction. I have discovered that auctions have been opened in NY state in recent years, and elsewhere. I see it as a long time coming.
    You mention Leola is the oldest, only from 1985? Is that counting only 'produce only' auctions? Did you count local auction barns which have been auctioning produce for centuries(?) in this country? Thanks again!

    Think you could show the small box auction? I am really curious about how much those boxes go for.

      Me too. Would love to see what a family could get instead of a large amount like a reseller or restaurant.

    I was planning on coming up this coming Friday 8/11/23. This might be a dumb question but are the smaller boxes auctioned off or can you just purchase them? I ask only because in the video it showed just the large skids being auctioned. I have never been to one I’m coming from south Jersey and I want to be prepared.

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  Před rokem

      Everything is auctioned. You’ll have to get your bidder number before bidding. The office is right near the small lots.

  • @heathersevek4949
    @heathersevek4949 Před rokem

    How does the bidding work, what is the price the buyer is paying, pound skid, each.

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  Před rokem +1

      It all depends on how the item is described and what the item is. The auctioneer will make the decision…a pallet of peaches in boxes may be broke up between 2 buyers and sold by the box. Corn by the dozen. Smaller lots on the carts are sold how they are seen. Auctioneer may ask high bidder how many boxes of the tomatoes she wants…if not all then the next in line will be asked if they want any at that price….a big box of melons by the piece…amounts are marked on the tag.

    Do they have small enough amounts for a family of 3-4 or do you have to buy large amounts?

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  Před 11 měsíci +1

      They sell small lots. There are also even small odd lots that are auctioned.

    Do you ever have organic produce?

    • @LancoAmish
      @LancoAmish  Před 9 měsíci +1

      There is organic produce, no chemical produce, and conventional grown also. You would have to read tags on the lots to find out what is there on any particular day.
