INSIDE THE RETAIL APOCALYPSE! ABANDONED STORE CRISIS!

- Malls, retail stores, and restaurants all across the country are going out of business in a lead up to this coming recession / depression. The lucky ones that are still in business, are having a hard time right now as inflation is killing people's purchasing power and forcing many to only spend on essentials. How long can this go on for before everyone realizes the jig is up??

Remember when our parents used to drop us off at the mall with our friends for the day. Arcades, pizza, toy shops, record stores, movie theaters! What a fun time to grow up! Kids have no idea how much fun being a kid was in the 80's.
I loved the 80’s. I’m so glad I was a teen back then !
It was good because your parents had enough wealth to pass some to you for entertainment.
Birth rate cratered 20 years ago and adjusting for inflation wages have barely moved at all in like 40 years. There literally are fewer customers and the average customer has less discretionary income.
I may have been a 90s kid, but I loved the adventures I had in malls. It was quite an experience and I will miss the good times they were.
@@cjhoward409 I’m glad I was a teenager in the early 80s and became an adult in that decade. Great great times.
It's not just that the stores are closed down, the quality of what's left is down as well. Nothing to draw you into the mall.
Do you use Amazon?
Always ….
Only stores flourishing are vape, tattoo, and small liquor stores. Businesses that require only the owner to operate, no employees.
Anecdotal story that sums up why brick and mortar retail is failing:
Needed a replacement tire for my wheelbarrow. Saw them at Home Depot drove 10 minutes at 9pm on a Friday night to go buy it. Found two on the shelf, both had the axle adapters removed from the packaging. Drove down the street to Lowe’s, walked around for 10 minutes trying to find tires. They did not have the one I needed.
An hour total of my time wasted.
At midnight, I went on Amazon, found the tire I needed and it was delivered in the morning.
More and more, I just go to Amazon. Soooo much easier
Yeah
Unfortunately, that's the sad death spiral of this country, back in the day you would have had the choice of multiple (Mom and Pop/ Locally own Stores) to shop at but, once people started feeding their dollars to Big Box Stores like Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot...your choices became Large Corporate Scum bags..lol. This was ultimately the end goal, kill local economies and make them dependent on large corporations for consumer goods. Amazon will push this evaporation of local and ultimately national choice away until there is just a handful of Companies that supply you the items (goods) you consume. The definition of digging our own graves but, hey what do I know.
I'm an architect, we are turning malls into apartment buildings, student housing and storage/ garage space
Did that by me FOOLs 3sts didn't work 1 Block from 8 lane highway 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
Student housing...AKA migrant housing
I seriously doubt commercially zoned spaces are being used for residential use. There is a reason for zoning laws. Unless it was re-zoned which is not easy to do.
Sounds god awful expensive, meeting fire/escape codes
Migrant housing AKA replacement population AKA replacement votes
The cost of living has gone up so much in the last 3 years that no one can afford to shop anymore.
IT'S THE VALUE OF YOUR DOLLAR THAT'S DECREASING. THE COST OF LIVING IS ACTUALLY DECREASING IN BITCOIN, FOR EXAMPLE.
@@MichaelCoughlanmusic that would be cool if I could use bitcoin to pay my rent purchase gas and buy groceries. The only people that can purchase bitcoin are those with expendable dollars. But if you have a large family and live check to check. Bitcoin is of no use. We are starting to see a huge increase in the gap between the upper class and the lower class. Middle class is staring to become obsolete. This is why 30000 people on average leave the state of California. The working class can no longer afford to live there. I remember going to malls often in my 20s and 30s with groups of friends, it was a social experience for sure (many decades ago). These days kids and young adults' social experiences are entirely on a 3-inch-by-5-inch phone screen. Definitely not an upgrade.
I was a teenager of the 80's, and our lives were essentially a mid-west version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High... the mall was ground-zero, it's where everyone met up. During the holidays, you could barely move. The wife & I decided to hit the mall 2 weeks before Christmas last year, and it was absolutely DEAD... I was so dumbfounded that I just started snapping a few pictures for posterity sake, because that's when the realization really hit home that a part of my life was completely gone.

We’re heading to a very pretty scary situation, our country needs an urgent attention before is to late
I’m in my 60’s, spent a majority of my working years working in malls, dept. stores and a jewelry store, have good memories mostly, when malls were crowded, filled with people, spending money, I got out a few years ago, was tired of people mostly buying online, prices rising, not buying like they used to! It changed so much! Wasn’t fun anymore! I don’t even go to the mall anymore, can’t afford it! Malls are/were really a barometer of what is happening in our society! The stores, the movie theatres, the restaurants! I could go on and on!

People are realizing that spending money that you don’t have is dumb.
Not everyone. The girls next door get multiple deliveries from UPS, mail service packages, FedEx and Amazon. How do I know?. My dog alerts on them all!.
Living on credit is a typical American thing to do. I lived in Europe and also in the US. In Europe people only buy what they can pay cash, except real estate where people have mortgages. Also in the US there are companies who have 5-15 locations in one city. You don’t see that in other countries. I think time is catching up with the US.
Not my neighbors, they recently financed (leased?) a Tesla while whining about paying $4,100/mo to rent next door while living 4 working adults to a 3 bedroom townhouse. None of these people have decent jobs from what I gathered, the macho latin guy is a pest control worker.
Just a few financial stupid people are realizing this.
I buy from Amazon almost every other week and never had debt.
No, they are just spending money online.
These days, ANY mall I go to is a mere shadow of what the mall experience used to be. I think back to the holiday seasons of 2004/2005, and several of the malls were so jam packed, you struggled to find even one parking space. Sometimes you'd circle through the entire perimeter of the mall, for up to ten minutes, trying to grab a spot as someone else was leaving.
Inside the malls, every inch of floor space was full of people, restaurants had lines, jewelry stores were packed, perfume counters in departments stores were slammed. When you consider what retail once was, it's pretty clear that it's now on life support.
This is happening in many other countries. America is not alone.
Yes, it's time for the big reset 😢
The internet killed the shopping malls.
You could say it’s also killing society. Nobody meets people the old way anymore. They all meet on social sites. Sad.
Socialism sucked away all the wealth that people used to have to spend at the malls. The internet could never have done that.
And video killed the radio star?

Let’s face it, online shopping and Amazon have ended retail stores. Like automobiles ended the buggy whip industry, Amazon has ended shopping centers and malls.
This is 100% correct. Malls have been declining for years as a venue for shopping. This is just a cycle in retial, and is NOTan indictment of our economy. And, neither is soft sales in the 1st quarter of the year, as this is also a cyclic event that happens frequently. This video is misleading.

How can i reach her, if you don't mind me asking?
Well her name is 'ABBY JOSEPH COHEN SERVICES'. Just research the name. You'd find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.
Same situation around here in Massachusetts. There's a large mall nearby with a lot of empty stores and very few people walking around.
Great video as always!!! Did you see Walgreens WBA numbers today with announced massive store closing? It’s just getting started.
I had 4 stores in my local malls and closed them all last year… no business during the week, no flexibility, no employees wanting to work
People want to work if you offer OK working conditions and reasonable pay.
Hard if you struggle but its not the eomployees fault
No wonder people don’t want to work
These places have bottom of the bottom wages. All that work for shit pay? No thanks! Let it rot!
In Argentina they got a new president. He cut down on Govt spending, in 3 months they now have zero on inflation on food.
First time in 30yrs. You want the US to do better? You have a chance in Nov. Its not difficult to turn around inflation
How exactly is either candidate going to turn around inflation?
@@karenkoe7096 Do you know that every dollar in your pocket is actually a Reserve Note or borrowed from the Private Central Bank. This caused inflation ... our financial system must change. Vote Red Hats in Nov.
I pass. There are some things I like in my candidates over inflation, which politicians has no real power to reduce. I just buy what I need. I blame the greedy corporate kingpins for inflation, not politicians.
Greedy corporate executives are responsible for inflation. I will not vote for some crazy politician because they promise to bring down inflation, which they have absolutely no power to do. I simply buy what I need and live below my means and I do just fine.
I pass on voting for a president like the dude in Argentina. I prefer to vote for a nice boring qualified politician. Thanks.
@@karenkoe7096 Trump will support capitalism not communism/socialism. The latter leads to unproductive bureaucratic economies with high inflation and debt. Leftist policies are cancer socially or economically.
I had the same shock when I went to Lakeside mall in Michigan where 60% of Lakeside was shut down. Food court only has 2 Restaurant in it And it's the same story with 3 of the other malls right around the area all shut down
The death of the mall is partially due to the horrible economy we are experiencing. Necesity is the way to go and live now and NOT WANTS.
I put a hard stop to eating out for my family. My 15 yo son decided to follow my lead meal prepping.
Same. Both my teens love to cook. And it’s so much better for the health!
The reasons that malls are failing; To many of the same type of stores from one mall to another, crime, online shopping and location.
I agree whenever I go to the mall I’m in and out cuz I go for what I need and I’m done there’s no need to go to the other 12 clothing stores when one of them is good quality and well priced.
As far as my mall goes I’m seeing it move in the direction of more restaurants. I remember like 6 in the food court and like 2 outside of the mall building itself now there’s like 14 in the food court and maybe another 6 or 7 throughout the mall and I think 5 outside of the building in the lot
It’s because everyone is at work and no one wants overpriced crap
Stop lying. Crime is down.
It's the fall of the US empire. Since 2020 people have awoken from the American dream which was an illusion.

what Michael is leaving out is Rockford IL has had the highest unemployment in IL for decades. it is/has been a mess for years
I was there three weeks ago. I used to live in the area. It is crazy how much that whole area has changed in the last 5 years. So many boarded up businesses and homes.
I walked into a drugstore and I looked at items I was interested in getting. Then went online and found out in every instance I could get it cheaper and delivered to my house😮 why would anybody go to a mall or store?🤔
Not to mention having to drive there and waste your gas and put miles on your car.
The items online are most likely stolen are repackaged.
Once we can only get things online, the prices will be high and availability low. This is planned control of how much and what they want us to consume.

You're close to an Amazon distribution center the size of an airfield. Go out there and explain why the mall isn't full.
I don;t agree with this idea, people used to like going shopping, wandering around looking at stuff and eating out. I hate ordering online especially for clothes but then I don't do it. People have completely stopped spending money in my opinion and the private equity firms that own these malls are raising rents to make up for loses which means they're going bust. This is worse than 2008 in my opinion, I just cannot see how the Gov can bail out all the failing banks again but if they do then there will be even more inflation and higher rates to come.
The mall from my childhood was torn down and is now an Amazon distribution center 😕
@@JagdgeschwaderX Lots of stores in the mall just sell junk from China so might as well buy from the source. Same stuff for less, way more convenient, and you don't have to deal with crowds.

@@saltykrautGreat puppy mill. Glad it’s closed.
I remember malls being energetic and full of activities, the last time I went to one everyone was staring at their phones shuffling around like zombies lol definitely not a solid customer base❤️
As a kid in the 80’s, I practically lived in the mall! Sad to think that Amazon, where I bought my college textbooks is now where most of us do our shopping. Maybe stores like Target or grocery stores could be anchors at a mall which might pull people in. But I have no idea if the commercial cost of that is feasible.
Back in the 80's and 90's, even years before I guess, malls were super packed with people. Nowadays malls are being used as exercise tracks for the elderly with small pockets of people walking around.
Nail salons, Claire's, JC Penny, and a majority of Jewelery stores tend to stay until the mall closes down.

Many of these once popular restaurants have shot themselves in the foot by serving lower quality food, employing workers with questionable qualifications, such as the cook and wait staff, and still raised their prices…..So now, many are closing their doors and wondering “What the heck happened?”….Hello!!
They HAD to. Prices skyrocketed and they had to make reductions. Portions, quality, it's a disaster.
Seems like the customers shot themselves in the foot from years of not cooking at home and living within means. Probably a lot of debt as well.
I agree. The restaurant experience is no longer enjoyable. The food is not as good as it once way. They are squeezing you into such a small space that the server has a hard time getting you your food. I don’t mind paying a little more for a nice time but if the atmosphere and food is no better than what I could do at home, Why do it ? Then I’m suppose to leave a nice tip on top of that.
@@blackworldtraveler3711 I totally disagree with your opinion….Yes, no one is “forced” to dine in at restaurant, but, any establishment that chooses to make money off of the public, MUST provide a quality product and service…if it can’t; then get out of town!!

Sad to see them go!
I met my ex at the mall. And when were first married, we would cruise the mall on a Saturday night because it was cheaper than going to the movies. Those were good times. The peanut butter sandwich days.
Been avoiding marriage and single mothers since high school. Live in Oklahoma and Florida.
My girlfriend met on a Dubai/Paris flight in 2001 and been together ever since. She’s Italian and our first date was a packed lunch and morning hike along Amalfi Coast. It was a cheap activity.
Haven’t been to a mall in over 20 years.
We are only buying the basics right now - food, clothing, shelter. We haven’t had a decent vacation in 5 years.
Same with us, no big vacation in 5 years.

Todays arcades suck. Bright lights, sparse games. Remember back in the Golden Age when you'd walk in and it was so dark you could barely see, very cold, games lining the walls and all over, the table top games, and the smell of running electronics. Those were the days.
We have cut back dramatically on our restaurant nights . The one thing that really stands out for me is the cost of beer and drinks since 2017 . In 2017 a beer would cost $2.50. Today that same beer cost anywhere from $4.00 to $8.00. As a consequence we just don’t go out every night of the weekend anymore . We’ve cut it to Saturday only. Why pay $8.00 dollars for a Coors Light when I can buy it all day at Krogers for $1.00. How can anyone justify that mark up and who is dumb enough to pay it ?
During Covid we really retrained ourselves to eat/cook at home....now we actually prefer it. Saves a lot of money too.

In Australia it’s a divided society - you have 30% (mainly boomers) who have seen massive growth in house prices, shares etc, and the other 70% is struggling. The trouble is, the 30% is travelling, buying luxury items and shopping like nuts - therefore driving up inflation for the average person. This can’t last.
Who needs malls? Amazon, Wayfair, and Doordash. Boom! Shopping done online. Lifestyle has changed again. When I was younger we had mom and pop stores lining the mainstreet, People moved indoors to malls to escape weather. Then the COV happened and people want to be outdoors again.
My family moved to central Florida just two years ago, having lived in Rockford/Cherry Valley for most of our lives. Our home was five minutes away from Cherryvale Mall. A decline in mall traffic and an increase in store closings has been a consistent theme over the years. In addition to rising costs for both the stores and the consumers, the mall has experienced several shootings, theft, and burglary in recent years.
That said, Tilted is a lot of fun. The first floor has a bar with with food and beverages, plus bowling and laser tag.
