LS camshaft bearings…. They’re fine until you look at them 👀
A little foreshadowing here?
Shrodingers bearings
Yeah, exactly. Ray, you don't replace those cam bearings, you could damage the journals on the new cam.
Every time I've seen anyone replace a cam, the bearings also get replaced.
I built 2 LS3s and didn’t have any issues.
Do those engines diesel with all that carbon on the top of the piston?
Appears that the current owner loves this car more than the last mechanic. Satisfying to watch this tear down.👍🏼
A 40 minute video that felt like a 40 second video. That's how immersed in Ray's video's you become. Have a great day everyone in Ray's Repairs world and an even better tomorrow.
No thats how little use you are to humanity.
Ray is so happy and upbeat during disassembly let’s see what he’s like during assembly!
Well… he loves his job so much he does to twice.. and maybe thrice if he forgets a bracket!😁😂
He probably doesn't enjoy assembly as much as he does the teardown. I will admit the dude has a great attitude during difficult jobs. I wouldn't have a good attitude.
Tip for doing this job is a roll of plastic sandwich bags, that you use to hold all the fasteners and small parts per assembly, and a small zip tie or a knot to attach bag to part. Also the bags are good to cover ports and pipes, keeping debris from entering. Do not have to be strong, or ziploc, the cheapest ones will do fine.
Been doing this for years, especially when it's something I know is gonna be apart for a while. Cheap ziplock bags and a roll of masking tape to label everything.
Legit Street Cars starting using single use aluminum muffin pans to keep them sorted lately. I think he saw it at a DeLorean shop or something, and the past few videos he's been really excited to share his find lol.
I always used zip locks, but I'm kind of sold on the muffin pans now. Not only does it keep bolts together, but you can keep them in order of disassembly, too!
It should be illegal for a Florida mechanic to remove an exhaust manifold bolts on TV. You might make them jealous in the rust belt.
😂😂
I bought a 760Li BMW from Florida. It's nothing to brag about. The salty air destroyed all the weather stripping seals
Might make them?! My ass is screaming through the phone! 😂
A dod junk gm engine jealous? Lol
I just did a set off shorty headers on my truck and I’m from NY took me almost 2 days to get everything off
When I had my Corvette shop we bought 4 shelf shelves, and added casters and braces so we could roll them around. When we took a car apart we would place the parts on the shelves/carts with a piece of tape saying what job they went to. We restored cars so some jobs could have 5 or 6 carts, but it kept parts together and off the floor with less losses and damage. We also used plastic cups to keep the bolts with the part they came off of, with a show car you can lose points for having the wrong bolt in the wrong place, so details are very important.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing 👍
I think Ray may need a bigger shop just for all the carts!😂
@@devinangola3458 We found that it actually took up less space using the carts, instead of it laying on the floor in a pile, it’s stacked up vertically taking up less space. Hopefully, Ray sees this and takes it into consideration, it made a big difference in our shops and I’m sure it will in his.
It's not the tear down that shows the muster of a mechanic, but the reassembly. Remembering what goes where and with what bolt/nut, that's when the real fun begins.
There's a lot of people saying it would be nice to watch this part or that one. Me, well let's just say, I WANT TO WATCH IT ALL. I love how Ray works because he makes everything look so easy, and makes me want to learn more as I grow the confidence to do some jobs on my own.
I want it all, and I want it now - Queen
Yes! I have never seen Eric remove a dip stick tube that easily on an LS 🤣
Ray uploads so regularly, what a hard working guy (and filmmaker, on top of it)
Google how much $$ you make making youtube videos! Scotty Kilmore has made over a million
@@kevink8481hey man, most of us are just along for the ride. I hope he is/does make a million… then he can go buy a better truck! Can’t just keep putting lipstick on a pig Ray!😂
Only a Florida Man can get away with wearing crocs during a LS teardown video.
Wearing Crocs is a small step over wearing flip flops
Not overly clever I wouldn’t have thought! I wouldn’t wear crocs ante=where let alone on film🤣🤣
@@johnlarkin549 Crocs are only good for teardowns when the engines are puking oil and antifreeze. No sense ruining a good pair of shoes.
@@DogAteMyPopcorn Well he’s certainly not ruining a good pair of shoes not that I know to many who wear a good pair of shoes to work as a mechanic, normally work boots they are like slippers once worn in. 😁
It's OK, Ray's wearing steel toed safety socks.😎😎
Some time back I asked Ray to do cam and lifters on an LS and here we are thanks !
It is almost like Ray knows what he is doing while watch this video.
Almost
@@RainmanRaysRepairs has seen a video on You Tube on how this is done!
@RainmanRaysRepairs why doesn't your customer spend the extra few hundred dollars & put new rod & main bearings, new rings, & polish the crank?
It just seems strange to tear it down that far, when new bearings & rings wouldn't really take that much longer to do, then he'd have a new engine
AFM/DOD delete is a must on these...!!!
It's the same story for ford and stellantis too.
If I kept my 2020 Z71 5.3 I would have dod deleted it. But I got a new Baby Duramax so no lifters now
My son is doing a cam swap on the same motor in his truck right now😮
I still use AFM on my 07, it makes a metallic clang noise when using light throttle in V4 but still works fine and gets 17+ mpg.
@@TheMW2informer Maybe you should try getting a AFM/DFM Disabler that plugs into OBD2 port that makes the engine stay in V8 mode full time?
I learned (reinforced by a spank and being sent to my room without desert for a few days) when I was around 5 or 6 that it is a LOT easier to take something apart than to put it back together correctly.
In my case, it was the kitchen wall phone and it had to be replaced.
-
After that, I was only allowed to take apart things that were already broken or had stopped working, but it channeled my inquisitiveness and led to a career of electronics repair.
Very impressive with the growth of your shop. Congrats
What a deal. Ray tearing down an LS to remove that junk AFM crap and also an Eric O vid on the same morning. That's starting your day the best way. Wish I had my 05 Silverado torn down and a nice little improvement cam and lifter set...no AFM model. Looks so easy how Ray tears it down in like record time (video editing but still). When I get the green I might have to have mine shipped down and done on video so I can see. Fascinating to me the ins and outs and how simple they look when broken down this clearly and straight forward. Now, can't wait to see the rebuild. That SS might just have gotten another 300k sitting in it after this. Cheers.
I couldn't believe the amount of work involved with the tear down and can't wait to watch the reassembly.
...After seeing the last broken engine tear downs...I was thinking it would be awesome to see Ray put one back together!...awesome work...going to be a good series of rebuild videos!...thanks for sharing...stay safe out there!!😎👍🤙👍🤙🇨🇦
Did he ever get that Subaru engine baK together?
I had my AFM/DOD disabled by the king of LS tuning (James Brewer). He did things to elongate the engine and transmission:
* Fuel map fixes for better performance
* Trans pressures/shift points to elongate the 4T65E-HD glass trans
* Removed the speed governor but put in an rpm limit of 6500 to protect the engine
* Cooling fans on almost continuously to protect engine and mostly transmission
AFM/DOD parts are still in the engine and can still fail, real fix is to get the LS4 King's DOD delete kit. I have a Lacrosse Super. The cars that run the LS4 are W-bodies (GMX230/231/365). Chevy Monte Carlo SS, Chevy Impala SS, Pontiac GXP (with shift paddles) and the Buick Lacrosse Super. Super is a sleeper and is actually the fastest of the 4, especially with a tune. Not as sporty as the rest.
When the trans gives up the ghost, I'll be doing the DOD delete thing, Triple Edge Performance transmission rebuild and put her back on the road for another 200k+ miles (214k on her now)
No matter how many engine tear down videos I have seen or engine tear downs I have done, I never get bored watching them or doing them. Something very cathartic about it I suppose. Only problem is that the video went by like a short. Oh well. Great job Ray. Cant wait to see it all being put back together.
Ray, wearing the crocs! What I have learned to like while working in the garage as well. Thank you again for putting out these videos. Making us home mechanics smarter and more confident!!
Steel-toed crocs, I'm sure...lol
@@cadesmith4278those exist? Never heard of those!
@@TitanreaperYT just kidding!
"I got a fever, and the prescription is MORE PRYBAR!" Put that on your merch.
I certainly do enjoy when you dissect things and of course I am interested in seeing the rest of this project seeing it through to the end and I look forward to the test drive when you're done
It always amazes me how much tear down is required when someone gets the idea to just "put a cam in it."
How the hell can you remember what goes where! Way too many bits and pieces for me to remember! I could never be a mechanic. I am a retired pathologist, give me organs and tissues to dissect and diagnose, anytime. I don’t have to put them back together. My hat goes off to good mechanics. I have experienced terrible mechanics and rarely excellent ones. For people like me who know nothing about mechanics get screwed by up sales, all the time. Thank you Ray, for your honest approach!🇨🇦
What I do is take pictures as I peel the parts layers by layers and use sandwchich bags and label them
Everything is on video.
I dare say there are a few people who wish a certain Boeing technician was as careful as Ray about keeping track of the fasteners he took out...
That is a staggering number of potential failure points in just the lubrication system alone.
I had a 2004 Sierra. Lost oil pressure locked up the engine. Come to find out it was that stupid o ring on the pickup thay broke. Awesome video sir
I know that, not too long ago, you did an “update” video and commented on how the number of projects you were working on were stressing you, and here is another! I hope you appreciate how much your customers value you as a mechanic, and that your business didn’t just end up as a lube and tire shop. For that, I congratulate you!!
Hi Ray. What a wonderful video. My grandpa told me to watch this and I'm amazed. He's here watching it too. You are a wonderful teacher. I've learned even more. Can't wait to see the installation of the new parts. Oh happy mothers day to your wife. Gota go grandpa wants his phone back. Thanks have a wonderful day. Leland
Happy Mother’s Day Ray and Lauren. Now time for the tear down and rebuild.🚀👨🏻⚕️
one great thing about videoing the disassembly is that if you happen to forget the location of something, you have it to refer too... I do this when I'm doing home repairs because I'm likely to forget something between the time I start the tear down and the time I get the parts to finish.
20:28 & 26:41 & 36:26
When Ray reaches retirement his collection of bolts he has collected all those years could exceed a ton!
Another great video as always Ray!
How about that Eric...?! I Love it...!!! Keep up your awesomeness Ray...!
82nd! Hope you’re having a great Sunday morning Ray,Lauren, and Dave, the new employee. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
My L76 (6.0 G8 GT) became a casualty of AFM/DOD after ~11 years of operation. At the time, I hadn't the place or time to work on it or have it worked on, so I ended up selling the car to a shop. I miss it often and wish I'd had the means, time, and place to have parked it and worked on it. Fun to see this video.
Love how Ray is wearing Crocs during engine surgery. Hmmm, Ray Croc(s) . . . Seems like I’ve heard that name before. Suddenly I’m craving a Big Mac!!😂. Keep up the great videos!!
I’m lovin it!🍔😁
AFM = Always Feeding Mechanics... Because of frequent breakdown issues! 😂😂😂
Dark stormy Mother’s Day in Texas.
Good day to skip restaurants and outside life in general.
Pounding an iced coffee with oat milk and chocolate bone broth.
Watching Ray do his thing.
Damn... sounds gross as hell...🤷♂️
So this engine was apart before. Very interesting. Thanks people for another great video
From the engine front cover in the next video, I thought that it had been.
Always love the rainman camera that takes us on a journey!😂😎
Enjoyed can't wait for the next one in this series
Ray, GREAT video. Looking forward to the reassembly 👍👍👍👍👍😺🫠🐺
I sure hope you're going to show more of this engine up grade.
Definitely looking forward to the reassembly video!
Thanks for another great video Ray. It’s a change to see you stripping down an engine fully. Can’t wait for the next video, watching it all go back together again. Cheers buddy and keep up the good work.
Innes
Now that was a fast tear down, just hope it goes back together just as easy! 😊✌
If ur going this far a part go all the way do pistons and bearings make a new engine!!!! If the pistons r good just the rings!!!! Bearings every where!!! Check the oil pump put new water pump!!! And new pulleys for no noise!!! Love ur work Ray make ur millions!!!!
My thoughts exactly. Might as well re-ring, all new bearings (especially cam bearings), and check the pistons and block for any cracks. Maybe hone the block 10-over.
Hey Ray, great video. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers!
Teardowns are awesome Ray!
Got to watch Ray every day!
That is definitely a fun job. One of the best I’ve done.
I don't normally care of the super long multi video format, but I loved this video and I am looking forward to the following ones. Good vid Ray.
it's torn down so far might as well send the block for machining, new pistons and rings.
At least new rings and bearings
Awesome video, looking forward to the series. Love a good engine pull, teardown, and rebuild with performance modifications. I have done a few Hemi's and also removed the MDS systems with the rebuild. I also have noticed that when removing the old head bolts that they do have a very distinct smell.
Sleeperdude recently released a video in the same vein, big difference tho is his took months of work and waiting to get to his released video lol. Just a neat coincidence to see something similar from different guys, both quite enjoyable in their own ways.
Just watched sleeperdude do this exact same job on his personal vehicle. Thank you for making this video. I enjoy learning about how these systems work.
I liked how you pulled this engine apart in macro assemblies.... it only makes sense and it makes reassembly so much easier.... P.S. I love watching you.... I love the steel toe'd safety crocks.... ; ) Doc.
Good video Ray, very informative.
Nice teardown Ray,
So a couple of things,
Can’t wait to see it finished but not only did we hang it on Eric but also managed to break a stud off🤦♂️(yes I know it was broken already)
Ya need to call Cody he’s got a great new tool for stud removal 👍👍,
Also safety crock Saturday????🤣🤣
Cheers
I like the Amsoil sticker coving on the oil jug. 🙂
great detailed engine teardown ray!
Wish them the best, Hope the parts are good quality, and not just a pretty box.
Good morning from Spartanburg South Carolina!
I'm about to do one on a 2013 yukon xl for one of my local police officers. When I'm done with this thing I'm hoping it is faster than his squad suv. He is having me put some power in this thing. Lol
Looser torque converter

Good morning Ray. You sound good today.
I’m already looking forward to the reassembly
I love engines tear down videos. Great job!
Welcoming back!
cutting so many corners, i love it. work smarter, not harder 😂
Nice to see the “safety” crocs today!
Great video 👊🏻👍🏻
LoL love the amsoil sticker on the oil jug!!!!!
LS engines are super easy and fun to work on. SO many different aftermarket options. The lobes on the afm cam are different in the location of affected cylinders.
Cant wait to see the end product! Youre great at this ray!!! Dare i say youre the GOAT??? Greatest of all time!!!😊
Drinking a beer and enjoying..all is zen at rainmans repairs!😎
Bolt gravity!😂
I have the DOD/AFM on my 2009 Silverado! I know it's a ticking time bomb at 148K. There are a couple of class action law suits because of these lifters. GM is still doing it and having the same exact problems! Lol!
And the 5.7 hemis are just as bad with their MDS system.
Hi Ray, thank you for the very educational video. I learned a lot on this one. Just one quick question will there be any horsepower and torque gains?
Hey Ray, it would be kind of cool to have Dave perform more sound effects to replicate different failures. 28:26 "This rear end is making awful noises" "Is it? What's it doin?" "WoWm WoWm WoWm WoWm"
You make things look so simple!!
oh and massive word of advise would be to do the trunion upgrade on the rocker arms while you have them off... you know how the factory needle bearings are and would hate to see all your work go down the crapper on a simple upgrade fix to prevent a future rebuild due to little needle bearings swimming around in the motor.... just a thoughtful heads up warning ... yep i got out of the LS4 life because of the constant issues they have but learned alot about them while i drove mine
Stock they are fine, it's only when you put a non factory spec value cam in and start reving it beyond the stock specs it is necessary.
@@shadowopsairman1583 yea nice try... those factory trunions are very prone to go bad even in stock form,,, not buying it as i have seen it many time happen,,, you run them if you want however since that motor is down that far its very good insurance to do the upgrade
If the control solenoids are no longer used how does it affect the engine management/computer? Does it set a code, is a reprogramming necessary. You mentioned the connecter when you removed the valley cover.
Yeah needs the tune altered to disable AFM. Its a single check box in HP tuners I believe.
LS4 (Jedi Mind Trick): "Ray - you must continue the rebuild..."
Ray: "I must continue the rebuild."
LS4: "Dave, you will reinstall me after the rebuild"
Dave: "I will reinstall you after the rebuild"
Good day to you all , very impressive job here . Motor dropping Dave has done it again ! Great job Dave ! I once rented a new chev truck that had that system of cylinder delete to make it a 468 . It was constantly switching on hills . The truck had 250 miles on it when I picked it up . I was the 2nd guy to drive it . They offered to sell me the truck for 38 grand , was a 2019 at that time 4x4 quad cab , had lots of options on it . Was wondering if installing rings and bearings would be a good thing on this engine ? Don’t know the miles on it .
A great and very interesting Video :)
Good video Eric.
Nice Teardown.:)
Good day Ray and hi to Dave
I wish i could formulate the words to adequately describe my hatred For GM for what they did to the LS platform with DOD. Those engines were bulletproof before they decided to appease the EPA by haphazardly slapping this system onto a proven platform. Oil burning, lifter collapsing, cam wiping, carbon fouling the list goes on. Anyway, thanks for doing what i will someday do to my truck when its no longer the Daily and i cant have it down for days at a time with the motor pulled
This is going to be a good video, video approved some assembly required end of transmission, click.
I really enjoy your videos, and none of them are pay per view.
That's a nice Monte Carlo someone has really taken care of it that red looks nice with that model .
Interesting teardown of the LS, and explanation of the AFM system. Assembly minus that system will be interesting. Will the electronics of the car have to be modified without the AFM?
We did get a small Lauren/WifeUnit cameo, and a little bit of Dave too. Thanks. 😊
Exhaust bolts, use pb blaster catalyst and spray the bolt and beyond the flange. I got all of mine out without breaking them.
Definitely look at the pushrods and rocker arms for wear spots
Check the rocker bridges for wear/damage, I replaced a set on an angine I acquired.
Use the factory GM Lifter Trays or BTR units, not chinesium Amazon units. Dod delete I believe requires blocking off the ports that the oil passes through to the VLOM. Sealant is only required at the 4 corners where the rear and front covers meet the oil pan. The cam seal plate I replace due to seal wear.
Always nice to see Lauren. Even the lower half. 😁
I'm literally doing this right now on my wife's 08 Chevy Silverado 5.3l. Wish you were in AZ. Totally over my skill level.
It is good to film the teardown so you can use the video when putting things back together 🙂
Nice display
