The first thing I noticed is THE SPACE. His phrasing on that second video is SO deliberate and communicative. It's not just like "look how many notes I can play." It's PHRASING, not just chops.
Also, I get why Adam asks if this is "it" for him. This is the area Domi, JD, etc. have a leg up, they are VERY VERY INNOVATIVE IN SOUND!
I saw Joey in LA do a show with a trio around 2015. Happened to be sat next to his bench. Beyond real-deal. That "Countdown" recording is all anyone needs to hear to understand how "out" this guy is. Equally as impressive is that he's been able to build a career without the common musician influencer tropes of hamming it up for the camera. Certified badass.

A good “You’ll Hear It”! Thanks, guys. For me, this does bring it back to seeing Joey doing “Giant Steps” or “Countdown” at age 12/13. What impacted me the most was the dimensionality, the lad’s spirit, the interaction and sense of communication in the ensemble. Yes, the chops and musical sophistication were massive, but the soul was so obviously present. In some way, I really don’t need to see virtuosity to get off, and it’s nice when soul and virtuosity come together at that young age. The vibe of talent is also another menu item. That was all there when Joey burst forth on the scene. From there it’s anybody’s guess. For me, that was the sufficiency and the inspiration.
I like Joey and how he always just been into the music and Joey and he parents haven't tried to overhype him. They just let him do what he wants and it happens to be great.

You gotta do ‘Justin Lee Schultz’. He has such feel and taste , deffo the most naturally gifted and interesting jazz piano prodigy I’ve ever heard.
And like every other instrument
justin needs to learn to phrase since most of the time he just spits out words

One guy that I from the beginning was kinda impressed by, but then thought "is it really that good", and finally just have embraced is Yohan Kim. It would be very interesting to listen to you reacting to his music. Not as jazzy maybe as the other guys, but I find him amazing.
Joey Alexander is ten times the line player and composer that Domi is. Do people actually think that Domi has more chops than him? Yeah she plays fast, but I have watched all of the Domi/JD videos out there, and I feel like all her improvised lines all sound kind of the same. She also has this one move where she runs up the keyboard with her right hand and then plays a fast tremolo, and I swear she does it in every video. It's like she's racing to play as many notes as possible. It's either that, or she's good at playing transcriptions I guess? I don't know how you compare her to Joey Alexander, whom I've seen twice live, and he's played the keys off the piano both times.

The thing about Joey is that at that age his playing sounds like he's lived a lifetime and had his heart broken....just so much emotion.....where did it come from all that soul...its just God given...and that's that
what is most out of this world is that Joey here with 13 is basically the bandleader with Larry and Ulysses and is able to do arrangements on the spot with improvisation

I love Joey. When playing with the flow, you'll be playing whatever that is guiding you at that PRESENT MOMENT (because there is ONLY ever be the present moment). It's about ENJOY-ing ' the blissful 'BEing-ness' and only be in the present moment. Joey will continue to evolve and florish.
Joey. Wishing you all the best. Stay true to your true self. Don't ever let fame pull you down. Fame does not bring PERMANENT inner happiness.

I love Joey - discovered via a comment 8 years ago from the keys guy from brilliant Aussie group The Consouls - and I also found Yohan Kim shortly after. Basically s Korean Joey who learned a few other instruments and sings. Like Cory Henry, Yohan started at about 3 playing church aongs. Joey playing a solo Sonrisa at age 9 is a standout for me.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Kiefer. I think that's a fairly current incredibly talented musician that avoids the pitfalls of most other popular contemporary players. He plays beautifully but it never feels like someone is shooting notes at you from a machine gun like some of these other guys.
I love his compositions! He's really created a unique voice for himself.
His solos are soulful

I remember seeing Joey when he was about 10 when he turned up to a stride session at the Fat Cat. We were all totally gobsmacked 😮
Would love it if you'd react to the the OG IG keyboardists turn producers as well! I'd consider Rob Araujo, Anomalie, Kiefer to be the original trifecta who used IG first
A few years ago I saw Joey live. After 5 minutes, I forgot how young he was. His thinking and creativity is amazing. The question is will he become the next Chick or Herbie?
Guys, it was nice to hear some from Joey. He's a great musician. I've followed him for years and I think what made him special was not just his skill, or his feel but his exuberance. When he was young he would play and have a huge smile on his face. As he's matured as a teenager he's gotten more "serious" and he now plays more originals. The only thing is that his compositions are mostly mood pieces that normally shift modally or vamp between a few chords. His earlier compositions like Sunday Waltz or Bali were more tuneful and melodic. His earlier jazz covers were great as well like his version of Moments Notice. I miss his earlier stuff but I'm still a fan. I wonder if he changed because he felt a pressure to "mature as an artist" or "find his own voice". For me at least...Joey is at his best when his playing is infectious and joyful...and makes you smile. Even though I don't get that from some of his more recent work, I know he's capable of that and I'm content to wait and see what's ahead for him. His 20s could be very fruitful. I hope so!
You have absolutely hit the nail on the head. At 19, Joey is possibly now trying to find a distinctive direction for his career and so is playing his own stuff mainly and the standards much less. In a way, he recently seems to be playing more for the other musicians than for the audience. That's a shame because he can play the standards better than anyone and manages to find a unique interpretation every time and one which nevertheless has a wide appeal. He is the opposite of stereotypical. For instance, check out his solo on "Ask Me Now", played in Copenhagen with sax player Gabor Bola. Two and a half minutes of creative genius achieved while dealing with one of the most difficult of chord charts. And the playing is technically perfect. He was 11 years old at the time! Well, I hope he gets back in touch with his true audience sooner rather than later.
The playful and joyful child Joey was an absolute delight (there's such freedom in the playing) and the way he interprets standards has always been wonderfully surprising but I'm thinking that we are now seeing him 'moving on' to explore a different side of his talent. He will, no doubt, play standards again but just a HH had so many different phases, Joey will have the same over hopefully what will be a long and continuing illustrious career.

Nice job with Joey. Like others I've seen him grow on CZcams, but it's nice to see artist like him compose. That's what jazz really needs.
Does it really need that? Feels like every one in Jazz composed by default because of the nature of jazz.
If you follow Joey you get to hear his spontaneous daily/weekly improvisations that are more like a classical composition done in a Chopin like improv way
You should check Anomalie he has an interesting approach similar to JD Beck but more towards the electro side still with jazz sprinkles
George Gershwin was friendly with Fats Waller and admired him as a pianist and composer.
How about Terrance Shider? He's got some pretty amazing videos on CZcams. Mainly playful interpretations of pop tunes, but I think I've seen him put his twist on some jazz standards, too, and have always come away amazed or at least seriously impressed.
I'd recommend Anomalie, very hip sound.
You should have a listen to Holger Marjamaa. His solo on One Finger Snap is pure ecstasy

I'm addressing comments re: Joey's progression from a 12 yr old to a 19 yr old.
Honestly he is still just a kid, albeit a verrrry talented kid, and he hasn't experienced much life. I'm not talking about the fact that he has traveled out of the country and has played on some of the biggest stages with some major artists, I'm talking about life like being in love then having your heart shattered or serious life altering setbacks. (I hope none of that happens to him but...) Also, becoming a father or falling in love with an amazing partner. I think he just needs to live a bit longer, have more experiences and THEN he can have more to pull from and you'll hear an even more passionate and individualistic sound from Joey.

As somebody already commented I never thought of Joey as significant because of his age ... I just heard a great creative pianist .
I'm actually curious about how his Countdown was structured. I'm still unable to figure out how he goes from completely free to structured in that song.

Maybe it's not being discussed because nobody can quite figure it out... it's like Miles 60s band ..."time / No time."
I'm also amused by the discussion about where he is "seeded" as if it's a tennis competition.
Last I heard Joey didn't really have a classical foundation and isn't very fluent in terms of literacy.
So when you're listening to him you're listening to a guy who's taught himself and you're listening to a wholly other kind of artist . He didn't go to Berklee and he didn't go to Juilliard.
He went to Joey . Everything he's playing is an expression of his unique soul. At least that's the narrative that forms in my head as I listen to him.
He doesn't care what we think and he's gonna follow his own path.
You know, he's deeply spiritual. He's talked about how his playing and his abilities are a gift from God and he respects that and is in tune with that.
Jazz singer Gregory Porter says the same thing . He's inspired and animated by his connection to his spiritual center and that's what you're hearing.
The head scratcher for me are the comments along the lines of "we've heard other people do this."
I've never heard anybody do Joey except Joey.
I think wynton was basically saying improvisation is an adult thing only. That kids rely on adults too much to ever do on the spot improvisation and just "do as they're told"
However, I think the issue goes deeper than that. It stems from societies misconception of what a biological child is. Once you're in puberty, you're nothing like a pre-pubescent.
What Joey is doing in the first clip is definitely improvisation (unless you put you straw hat on and say an adult wrote an arrangement that he is playing note for note

I really appreciate Joey A, so don't take this the wrong way. Does anyone else get distracted by his fingers not being round. It looks like he wasn't trained early on and got a bad habit. Does it really matter? His sound is good
It does not matter for certain music. It does matter if you want to play certain kinds of classical music. Outside of that, it does not really much as long as you can get your sound out.
