I just wrote a comment (elsewhere), about Leonard Cohen and the fact that he had cancer, so this is real synchronicity! I think Leonard's letting me know that he read my comment! LOL! Sorry for your loss.
These the original lyrics are the best version of this song. The rewritten version is GOOD, it's just a shame that no one sings the original lyrics. Because in my opinion, the original lyrics are what makes this song GREAT.
Just heard this for the first time and omfg. Whyyyyy did they change it?! I mean, I do agree the shifted lyrics can still be relatable, but THIS right HERE! 🔥
Mr. Cohen, we thank you for all the gifts you gave us that helped us to look inside ourselves... And I pray that you have finally found what you have always been looking for...
It’s so bizarre I just discovered this version to my surprise the original version. I have a naturally super deep voice and it’s hard to find songs that I can sing. Ive always heard this song sung in much higher pitched singers and brings me great joy this song was originally written for someone with a deep voice. I always sung this song and people thought I was singing it wrong. Well turns out I’ve been singing it in the original format unknowingly to me

Read the words in Psalm 51 where the repentant King David, who had before taken Bathsheba in adultery and killed her husband Uriah. Uriah had been an extremely loyal servant soldier in the army. David had him killed to hide his own sinful act. If there is a hallelujah to lift up to God it is for his forgiveness of King David. Also, it is instructive that David did not escape punishment, but the sword never left his house. Death and destruction were the signature of his family and his household in the wake of his sin. “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation.”
King David crying out to the Lord after he fell to sin of a beautiful woman and had her husband killed in battle to have her for himself. He was broken in spirit he had sinned great before God maker of heaven and esrth. He repented. After all this great sin, God still calls King David [a man after His own heart because King David truly sought the Lord and worshiped Him alone.] GREAT IS THE LORD ALMIGHTY. He sent Christ to set sinners free , that none should perish but have eternal life by the ransom He paid with His holy blood for all that accept this free gift. For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3: 16. Everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. He is holy.God made a way for all if they receive His gift of salvation, and seek Him with their whole heart. Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery to her accusers " He who is without sin cast the first stone. " Jesus then turned to the woman [ to be stoned to death , and said " where are your accusers?" ] ( they all dropped their stones and left one by one.) He then spoke to her " Go and sin no more."
I don't belive that Jesus said "go and sin no more " ! All is wrong presented all this years by males that is sinful to have sex with whom you like! Only you must not doing it with married man . Ha ha ha ha And today is more better ! Only you must wait to finish his divorce !
Thank you for posting the lyrics of this wonderful song. Unfortunately, you have left out my favorite verse "remember when I moved in you, the holy dove was movin' too, and every breath we drew was Hallelujah"
Yes, he did say that. He also said that he doesn't mind, or care, who does his songs (which is great because everybody wants royalties), just do it justice. I've done much reading and research about him, not only is he amazing but he's very interesting, too. What an amazing life he led, and an amazing man is he! I believe as long as we keep his songs alive (music and lyrics) he will never be 'gone'. Thank you Mr. Cohen. HALLELUJAH (praise God)!!
Delilah cut Samson's hair, and he sinned too, but thank goodness the Lord died for sinners and forgives us when we still love Him and yes we will meet Him in heaven
Yes. Biblical stories portraying how even the most faithful men fell prey to sexual sin, and God still loved, used and blessed them. And He can do the same for us, if we remain faithful and free from blasphemy. Hallelujah!
I've been saying this for so long! When I was a teen listening to this I was like "hmm, this actually sounds less innocent, more sexual...?" But was confused because this has been played at memorials and enlightening moments so I figured I must be wrong 😂 but in recent years I've held firm that is a sexual song of the tortures of love/lust and tell everyone and they think I'm crazy, I'm like have ya'll actually sat down and looked at the lyrics?! "Tied you to a kitchen chair, broke your throne, cut your hair, and from your lips she drew the hallelujah" That is basically sounding a lot like bondage, humiliation, and the eventual submission to lust. And that's after he sings about watching a beautiful woman bathing in the moonlight lol so..
I think it means that agter David sinned, he lost so much. The sword would never left his House from then. Sin breaks not only your throne, but also your relarionship with the Lord. Fron then on it would be a broken halleluja. Once baffeled with God, expressing his love in perfect song and halleluja, ended up a broken man, with a broken hart and a broken Halleluja. Thanks to God in Christ who came for the broken. Now we can keep on singing halleluja, now and for ever more!
It could also be talking about Samson and Deborah. As the story goes, God blessed Samson to be extraordinarily strong, but only if he never cut his hair. Samson lead Israel in fighting against the Philistines for decades, but his lover Deborah took a bribe to cut Samson’s hair and handed him over to be imprisoned and killed by the Philistines. “She broke your throne, she cut your hair”
I love the tune, but the words are naff and the guy (who I presume is LC) isn't always singing in tune! He's confusing the story of David and Bathsheba with Samson and Delilah - strange lyrics!
It's not a religious song so he's not trying to be biblically accurate. It's an allegorical song about sexual frustration. That's what makes it so freaking funny when people use it in inappropriate situations.
@@Thth-xo7cn I think this song is sarcasm about great religious people ! For their shameful behaviour ! That is why he changed the religion ! Thinking there is a better one ! Like Cat Stivens did !
