    My Dad brought a 36K mile 1963 E Type OTS home one evening in 1969. He paid $2400 for it. As a 14 year old junior gearhead I was over the moon and spent countless hours sitting in that car in our long driveway staring out over that incredible hood. At 16 I received permission to occasionally drive it with parental supervision. At 17 I was taking it out on Saturday nights and racing everybody in town. While not the quickest in the quarter mile, only the big block Corvette was as fast top speed. Many wonderful muscle cars could run in the 13’s but most topped out between 115-130 depending on gearing. Aero drag limited the high speed. Our Jag would do 115 in 3rd and once in 4th would just walk away on up to 150 without modification. Malcom Sayer was the aerodynamicist who designed the shape of the E Type with the aid of a wind tunnel. A former WW2 aircraft designer, he also helped design the winning C and World beating D types. The C2 Corvettes suffered from poor aero design and instability at speed. I have driven that 1963 E Type at 130 mph in a driving NW winter rainstorm. The brakes, 4 wheel Dunlop discs, were not quite up to the task, though better than the American muscle cars at speed. The Jag 4 wheel independent suspension worked very well, and full on powerslides were easily controllable unless it was wet. A snap spin at speed in an E Type is something you will never forget. As Jay mentioned, the rack and pinion steering gave remarkable feedback but transmitted a lot of niggling vibration and was not power assisted. Designed for bias ply tires, replacing them with radials resulted in more steering effort, especially at slow speed. All was forgiven above 40 mph. High speed stability was unmatched by any contemporary car that I have driven. We owned this car for 45 years. It was a daily driver for 7. The positraction rear end made it extremely slippery in the snow. I really loved the early non syncro first gear Moss gearbox. While the gear change couldn’t be rushed in a drag race, it felt extremely solid, had short throws, was quiet, and was a joy to operate. I was quickly able to master flawless double clutch downshifts into first while moving without grinding or damage, but this was rarely needed because of the huge low end torque. One just learned to roll the stop signs in second in town. We also had a 1969 E Type with the new Jaguar built full syncro gearbox as in the featured car. This was a popular upgrade back in the day but I didn’t feel it necessary for the 1963 car. I sold the Jag a few year ago and feel very blessed to not only have had it a big part of my life for decades, but a strong physical reminder of my Father, as it was his car. I never wrecked it, and mechanical repairs were limited to brakes, tires, exhaust system, one clutch, and tuneups. The triple SU carbs only gave trouble if you let the car sit for a year or more with ethanol gas. The new owner is performing a complete restoration and I hope he finds as much joy as we have with that remarkable car.

      Thanks for the wonderful recount! One of main reasons I come to Jays is exposure to vehicles I've never experienced myself. To learn of their workings and history, a genuine feel for the vehicle and people who own and build them. While I'm more a Springsteen american V8 gearhead, I just love the simple elegant beauty and design of the E Type. A brute without being a brute. Appreciate you taking the time to share your own history and thoughts on this wonderful piece of history. And even better you drove it as intended, learning and experiencing the car as a complete package, not just the beauty, as most examples in 2019 are never "driven" if you know what I mean........ Huge kudos for bringing us this build Jay, mechanical poetry that will get "driven" !!

    • @garthlundquist8316
      @garthlundquist8316 Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks for the appreciation Steve. My Father was also a gearhead, and encouraged me from a very early age to dive deep into all things mechanical. I bought, repaired, and sold 10 cars at a profit before I was 16. I didn’t lose money until I started wrecking them, but Father wisely told me: “ If you wreck it, you fix it”. I was sectioning Volkswagens at 12 and selling them. Sure got tired of repairing my 1961 MG Midget over and over. But it made me a better driver quickly. Back in the late 1960’s I could buy good running Jaguars, Porsches, and Mercedes for $1500 or less. I missed out on a very low mile Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing for $5000. My Mother blocked my purchase of an Aston Martin DB2 Drophead for $600 saying she didn’t have one at 16 so I wasn’t going to have one.. I did own hundreds of cool and unique cars and got to drive just about everything. A very fortunate childhood thanks to my Dad. He never bought a car for me, but showed me how to enjoy the hobby and make enough money to pay for college.

    I'll never forget the first time I drove an E-type. I was 18 and my first car after HS was a '63 Austin Healey 3000. The parts manager at the MG dealer where I bought it loaned me his '61 E-type when my car was in for service one day. I fell in love immediately! When he decided to sell it (because his dress shoes wouldn't fit under the dash!) he refused to sell it to me because I coudn't afford to maintain it properly.

    I love this car it brings back good memories. When I was a young kid, there was a guy in my neighborhood who owned an E-type, but unfortunately he never drove it. He would start it up from time to time, and I loved the sound of the engine. I always imagined what it would be like to go for a ride in it. There was also a guy I knew at church who restored an E-type with his father and he brought it to church one time and it was painted in the same paint scheme as the one on this episode. I've always been fascinated by this car and it's nice to see them tastefully restored and preserved for everyone to enjoy.

    The amount of trust these car owners put in Jay is so very much well deserved, some of the best reviews ever imho, I especially like watching him drool over a car for 20 minutes, then, "Can we take it for a drive?", and he gets to drive, wheee! My favorites are the ones when the owner/passenger/why says "We race this, give it some gas man!" [sic]
