      Drew's absolute bomber status should be acknowledged specifically for power, and control of the hyzer angle. He really is "leaning" into these buzz/leopard3 hyzer flips-he gets more carry and late flip than anyone else in the game on these lines. That same power/hyzer control lets him, more famously, demolish drivers long distances too.

    This is my third year spectating at Ledgestone, kudos to the multitudes of workers and volunteers that make this the best event of the year. In the past I’ve religiously followed lead and chase cards with the multitides of fans and requisite crowd control. This summer I decided to follow the earlier cards to get a closer look at what it’s like to play a tournament at this level and on this course. I must admit the access to players and their shot preparations was surprisingly intimate and educational. Of course all types of personalities abound, but I was caught off guard by the encouraging comments and fun banter in between players, caddies and volunteers. This sport is grounded in humble beginnings and player egos took a backseat to simply enjoying the round with friends or soon to be close acquaintances on the card. Without exception, fans were appreciated and even chatted with from time to time. Great shots were appreciated vocally as were the unlucky tree hits bemoaned among card-mates. The beauty of the game can be experienced by watching any pro player, but watching those middle/lower tier players, un filmed, unspectated, unheralded rounds with their amazing or abysmal shots is, for me, the heart of disc golf; and why it’s growth will continue for generations.

    • @wendigo121
      @wendigo121 Před 3 lety +6

      Not to take for granted disc golf as community and a sport overall, I`d like to say that there are a lots of other sports, individual or team, where, in fairly big/really big events, there are always these lower pools, groups, cards, etc, which contain a lot of people, that are not affraid of participating in big events and understanding their placement in these events, and therefore, they are open-minded, free talkin, and overall enjoying, just being there.
      The point is, I don`t think, that the attitude at lower cards is what will give the biggest impact in the exact sports growth (disc golf in this situation) - it`s the widespread of leaderboard players, when 10-15-20, or even more players compete for top3 finish, it`s the media, that shows this fierce competition, it`s the pro - professional athlete attitude form these top players, that make`s kids want to emit your McBeth`s, Ricky`s and Calvins, etc, and parents approving this course of future for their offsprings. That grows sport more than just your awerage Joe`s being nice dudes.
      I know, some part of this copies P.Ullibaries interview in R1, but I agree with him - sue me :)

I'm sure we'll see more negative personalities on the future, but as long as the creme de la creme is as positive and as inpirational as they continue to be, disc golf is going to be the coolest sport around.
      Sure, Mcbeth had kind of a meltdown, but he's still relatively calm and collected, not lashing out, not giving off negativity, and that's impressive when you're comming off a double bogey and throw two straight OBs.

      I know people don't like comparing disc golf to ball golf. But let's face it, there is a lot more money, and viewership in that sport, so I don't think it's wrong to take parallels, and perhaps learn some things. The masters isn't the masters because the course is easy. The players don't have 'fun' playing the US Open. Both those tournaments are an incredible accomplishment to win, because the courses are designed to punish the players' bad shots. There are plenty of golf courses out there where pros could regularly shoot 12 or 13 under, but they don't host pro tournaments at them. I really hope that one day we can get to the point where par in disc golf isn't a bad score at 80% of tournaments. This was a blast to watch. As long as there is a line, that the player knows that if they hit it, the disc will be safe, I think that's good. Obviously we don't want top players closing their eyes, throwing the disc and hoping for lucky kicks, but I think given what we saw here, if the player executes their shot they will be rewarded.

    I think the different reception of #12 (par 6, but all-time great hole) and #14 (higher stroke average, looks miserable to play) shows a valuable design principle. The 90-degree turn with dense rough all around is just too cheap and punishing of an element, it doesn't leave room for compensating with good scrambling like a more gently curving and open (but still difficult) design on 12. Hole 12 does feel like the whole adventure to Mordor, but it's an accomplishment worth the journey, while 14 just looks like it leaves people blaming themselves for tiny errors punished harshly.

    • @chrispreperato5562
      @chrispreperato5562 Před 3 lety +2

      Hole 14 should be playing as a Par 4 (or easier Par 5), forced short tee shot to the corner and then from there trying to make that magical tunnel shot. Reward touch and accuracy...instead of what it does now, which is not really punish a bad tee shot because 99% of the field is laying up to the corner on their 2nd shot anyway

    Fantastic, as always. You know what would take Jomez's coverage to the next level? A little graphic showing what shot players are on for a given hole. On longer holes, like hole 12, I often lose track - "is he throwing 4, or 5? Or was that 6, cause of OB?..." Heck, even the commentators get it wrong sometimes. Either way, thanks a ton!

    Talking about Paul McBeth on hole 15 being on tilt, what wasnt shown in this coverage was how many times and how HARD he punched either the ground or his disc. I am honestly concerned how well he is able to throw today.

    • @terrycrews1584
      @terrycrews1584 Před 3 lety +9

      I think he is having a hard time hitting some of the putts that he normally would and thats eating him from the inside. Thats probably whats causing him to lose concentration on these shots and he just cant get rid of the feeling, honestly he has been disc golfing a lot recently and needs a break.

    • @luv2hnt1973
      @luv2hnt1973 Před 3 lety +11

      He needs to hit something, he sure can’t hit the fairway. I’m a huge McBeast fan but to best in the world his shot selection puzzles me some times. Dude has a monster forehand and chooses to throw turnover backhands when his forehand would work much better. Flame away lol

    • @eleven9286
      @eleven9286 Před 3 lety +10

      @@luv2hnt1973 often times Pro's will choose to throw turnover backhand instead of forehand when they need to penetrate even further to the right. You can't skip a forehand as far down a sharp dogleg right nearly as far as you can get a nice turnover to glide down it.

      Bro the round was 6 hours and it was getting dark on the worst course ever. I mean be honest. If this course was local to me I would never play it. You would do nothing but curse trees and be ate up by bugs. I would be doing more than punching a disc. I would just go home.

    • @infinimetrical
      @infinimetrical Před 3 lety +8

      I had some moments of confusion. I could sense impatience within his actions. The tree smacks, OBs, and missed putts definitely add up when there is a high expectation on the self, and it's definitely hard to let go when in a high stakes game. However, there is still a lot to learn. All of the punching does no good, that had busted Eagle's hand with that method of release. I wish him peace, and much success.

      That would be quite decent result here, if you mean 150+ shots. That is something like 75-80 over par. 5 strokes over part per hole. I think probably about 30% of the people who plays disc golf would get that result. Almost all truly recreational players or people who plays to hang out with friends and drink beer while playing. They would probably throw +150 (150 over par).
