Oh man I love dungeon decks, watching Mat pop off was just magical.
The background commanders are heavily slept on imo.
Dungeon decks can really rock the house down. I've had Varis (Silverymoon Ranger) mono-green featuring decent elf support and Ellywick Tumblestrum (not exactly elf ball, but Ezuri puts in work), but I recently sleeved up Safana (Calimport Cutthroat)//Guild Artisan, and it supercharges the treasures, especially with Xorn and Revel in Riches.

As a Kathril player, playing buried alive and NOT giving him every single keyword with those three hurt me. With some more experience with the commander or deck tuning, I could definitely see a win coming from that turn alone. Also, as far as your closing statement about reanimation in the deck? Its a nice subtheme, but as you said with the dungeon deck, building around your gimmick tends to be better.
Brutal to finally cast Kathril only to get taken out. That Dungeon deck is nice.
Wow, that Safana is probably the best dungeon deck i've seen so far!
Bringing Kathril out and not being able to attack right away, being a complete waste... this is why I hate the fact that Ikoria never created haste counters.
That's why when I built Kathril I had all sorts of ways to grant haste/flash him on someone's end step. Savage Summoning is pretty sweet for that.
@@lout-p8372 yaaa, haste is not one of the keywords Kathril can get from its etb trigger. ..sorry.
There's lots of ways to give him Kathril but ya, missed opportunity.

Love seeing kathril. One of my buddies runs it and it can be nasty. Try Helm of the host in the deck if you haven't got it, makes it a huge problem if it has lifelink and indestructible
I don´t like they way my dungeons of death precon (Sefris of the hidden ways) turned out to be as its mostly chasing ventures and playing high cmc creatures from my graveyard with sefris triggers. Most of the big creatures I have don´t have a common theme so its mostly random big stuff and there is no common theme. The safana initiative looks so fun and it costs about 15 euros to convert the dungeons of death into a safana deck so im happy it worked so well here.
I've been working on a Safana deck for a while so I'm excited to get some ideas!

I built a dungeon deck this week with Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker and it has some absolutely ridiculous turns doubling (or even tripling) the room effects, especially with mass blinks. Built the deck on a budget of $50 and it's just crazy fun and hits way above it's weight class. Of all the dungeons, the initiative/undercity are especially good. There's a reason white plume adventurer recently got banned in Legacy!

I did the same I just built her yesterday and my God cloning the Angel dude who ventures off every non token creatures etb is insane the deck just refuses to stop making value lol
@@dess8815 Radiant Solar goes HARD. Just gotta mind that if you finish the undercity and the next trigger is a "venture into the dungeon" and not a "take the initiative" you'll have to go into one of the AFR dungeons. I tend to use tomb of annihilation as a group slug at that point and it's a quick dungeon allowing me to get back to the undercity fast.
@@iPhoneeditor your kinder than me I just dive into mad mage for even more value and another chance to hit a clone or flicker spell or a creature with initiative so that I can keep that value train rolling by the way do you run brago in your deck I find he's a monster when he gets a single trigger off
@@dess8815 yep! I have a couple of mass flickers including his ability. It's nuts when he hits. Might give the mad mage dungeon more of a go and see how I like it.
As someone who built Rilsa Rael not too long ago this video makes me happy. Had a win the other day where I cast a kicked Rite of Replication on Tomb of Horrors Adventurer and then followed that up by casting Phantasmal Image as my second spell. So many dungeon triggers. It consistently performs above its weight class considering how cheap most of the deck is. The ability to swap out the commander for Safana is just icing on the cake.

Thought of that as soon as I saw this game and now I'm the proud owner of a budgeted version of Matt's list.
I built Kathril, but ended up taking him apart. Still haven't found my Abzan commander, I'm hoping Thitrog will fit that bill.
I'm on a similar boat after retiring my Karador. I've been considering Ixhel.
My Kathril build is a beast. Not super high powered, but it can definitely slap
@@Canadian33 Mine either durdled and did jack shit or I got Super Ultra Mega Kathril and just bodied the rest of the table.
My Tayam, luminous Enigma 3 mana or less deck is my absolute favourite abzan deck ever. Yall should try him out.

That baffled me as well!
Both my rogue dungeon deck led by Rilsa Rael (mostly initiative actually) and my Sefris deck are quite strong actually, and they play completely differerent from each other.
Sefris = dungeon focus + Graveyard
Rilsa / Safana (I can switch) = initiative + aggro
Those dungeons are, in my eyes, free value. And once you finished one, the next few dungeons will be easier for some reason. With Sefris i have managed to run one dungeon 4 time in one turn. And that without Acerak + rooftopstorm. With the latter not being in the deck.
Also, Kathril is amazing. One of my stronger deck simply due to the amount of graveyard tutors. One BBog and it's over though.

Why is Matt’s dungeon delver card pulsating with the blue in the lower right of its art? Is that a reflection of a light on the foil or something?
How did he play dungeoneer pack that turn? Dungeon descent ETB tapped unless he has the alchemy version. 😅 only other land he had was Dimir aqueduct 🤔
I had this deck for like months and I just realised it entered tapped, might remove it from my deck juste because of that, thanks for pointing that out. Also my mistake. (Imagine it's a rogue's passage lmao)
@@thetemp7858 😅idt it was malicious and honestly it’s such a niche card in real time I probably wouldn’t of thought twice but ik there was a reason I hated the card if it came untapped I think it’d be a staple in a lot of decks.. awesome deck none the less

Oh lord this makes me almost wanna go this form for dungeons instead of sefris but I love my sefris dungeon engines.
I got both Sefris and Rilsa Rael (sometimes I swap for the background due in the Video)
Sefirs and Rilsa play completely different.
My 2 cents: Play dimir rogue tribal with initiative, so not focus too hard on the other dungeons like you do with Sefris
Also, it's super budget friendly to play dimir inititive.

Wouldn't Kathril have also had haste?
Haste was left out of the keyword counter party, and Kathril doesn't list haste as an ability it can get a counter from.

I'm sorry, but on turn 9 when you casted buried alive, you could have picked any 3 creatures you wanted and you didn't pick one with haste?
Kathril can’t have haste
Akroma, Angel of Wrath, had haste. However, haste counters are not a thing, so Kathril can't have it by itself.
Seems like you have too much ramp in your Kathril. You weren't doing a whole lot...
