Did Tories steal Labour policies - and is May election likely?

  • Will we have a May General election? Will there be massive Conservative defeat in any Election that we do have this year? And what’s the economy got to do with it?
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Here to answer those questions are Former Chancellor who gave us the infamous mini-budget of 2022, Kwasi Kwarteng, and the former Labour Party leader and Mother of the House, Harriet Harman. They join Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Channel 4 News’ Political Editor, Gary Gibbon to discuss Jeremy Hunt’s Budget announcement yesterday, income tax cuts, and why, in their view, the Conservatives are starting to look a lot like the Labour party.
Produced by Alice Wagstaffe, Silvia Maresca and Shaheen Sattar.

Interesting watch, Kwarteng seems more down to earth here and surely if anyone knows what it’s like prepping and delivering a budget it’s him. Either way, it’s quite clear from the tone of the conversation that everyone knows it’ll be a clear Labour win whenever the election is called.

The only thing I would add to your own post is that Kwarsi will be very much in touch with the current mood with the vast majority of the Conservatives and as he is leaving politics at the next election is not afraid to openly discuss issues.

The Conservatives won the last election on a landslide and gradually adopted the policies of the defeated party. I have never been a fan of Harriet Harman but I have to agree that if people want a left wing Tory party why not vote for a real left wing party ie Labour. Conversely, I have voted Conservative for years because I don’t want Labour policies so if the Tories are using Labour type policies, which they are, then I’m not going to vote Conservative. The Tories have managed to alienate not only ex Labour voters that voted for them but also life long Conservative voters. Quite an achievement really!

That is exactly what I told my Tory MP a couple of years ago. I am conservative but the party isn't. The party can't take real conservatives for granted by trying to become more Labour than the Labour party, thinking to keep both sides of support. I was angry and my MP seemed to be high on something, blissfully unaware. Now, he won't respond at all to any communication I send.

We need skilled carers. Why doesn’t anyone think of training up school leavers, mums/homemakers/older workers who have been made redundant who want to return to work to do it in exchange for education/skills training vouchers that can be used further down the line? Many single mothers would love to get further qualifications but can’t afford to do it but would happily work in the care sector for five years in exchange for the fees to do it (in addition to being paid a decent wage of course!)Many women have also been stuck at home caring for elderly relatives so were unable to work for long periods of time but as soon as their elderly relative no longer needs them they would love to return to the workforce but want a career so they can finally have a life! The government is so out of touch. We don’t only need university educated workers but much more skilled workers with good qualifications and adequate mentoring and apprenticeships - that’s what they need to concentrate on for growing the economy. Small businesses would appreciate less VAT ( as would the rest of the population!) and the rich can well afford to pay higher capital gains. We need to tax giant corporations more too.
