Funny that you'd say that. Your entire top 8 consists of episodes that I included in my own top 10, and that's likely the closest match between your list and mine in any of your ranking videos so far. You did rank those eight episodes quite differently within the list than I would have, but I'm not sure if I still want to stand behind my own rankings after hearing your arguments.

The whole bit with Skinner saying "girls might be predisposed to being bad at math" was a topical reference from the time. The then president of Harvard (the alma mater of many Simpsons writers) said something similar at a conference or something and it was a big controversy circa 2005

Classic symptom being the cause thinking. It actually was an important moment in history because it was the first time the Internet actually brought academic level research into a social science issue to the people. That is to say, people began to realize systemic causes from inequalities were the culprit and the average person started to question the built in system without having to go to college for social studies.

While I never usually say that I'm disappointed a video's opinion is different than mine, I really think that deserved a higher spot JUST for the Bob stuff than a mid-tier THOH episode. I find it particularly depressing on Bob's part because he finally left his life of crime and murderous intent behind him, getting a new chance at life, only for Lisa to get drunk and ruin everything for him. Only thing that bugs me about the episode is the American Dad "plagiarism of plagiarism" joke aged horribly. AD has proven itself to be far superior to Family Guy in every way and managed to become a crazy series in its own right.

Like, seeing them this chummy and close and seeing how much Bart loves his mom but is capable of leaving all he enjoys to get other's approval gives us a nice perspective of moments like that.

As an Italian dub watcher, I wanted to say that in Girls Just Want to Have Sums, they made a joke better than the original.
When the Skinner becomes Willie's assistant, the Italian dub slightly changed the conversation between him and Lisa:
    Skinner: "No girls allowed!"
    Lisa: "Principal Skinner?"
    Skinner: "It's groundskeeper Skinner now"
Willie: "Assistant groundskeeper, you piece of puke!"
Lisa: "Assistant groundskeeper *piece of puke* Skinner, don't you think it's wrong that I can't get the best math education because I'm a girl?"

One minor thing about Homers B plot in Marges son poisoning that I like is how worried he is about Marge. When he does wacky hijinks he usually doesn’t give her perspective a second thought so it’s nice to see him give up the hustle because he cares more about his wife

I appreciate that you're giving the post-Golden Age seasons a fair shake and not immediately dismissing them as "unwatchable" and whatnot. The "teen" seasons may not hold a candle to the Golden Age, but I think they've got more going for them than a lot of people on the Internet would lead you to believe. I'm very curious to hear your take on Season 18. This could just be nostalgia talking (S18 is when I started watching new episodes regularly), but I've always considered it one of the better seasons of its era.

    • @kinggizzard-livebary4153
      @kinggizzard-livebary4153 Před 9 měsíci +5

I think season 18 gets a bad wrap. Personally I think Boys of Bummer is a great episode when I first watched it I thought it was part of the golden age, and the things people dislike about it when I read peoples thoughts on the episode are the reasons I like it. I think it's great seeing the town almost psychotically go after Bart. There's an idea of "likability" when it comes to characters that I've always found a bit odd, I think it comes from American sitcoms, they want their characters to all be super nice under the surface. I think Jerkass homer is great, I actively enjoy homer being a jerkass, I'm not fond of him being a dumbass (dragging the computer along the road in his car in the computer wore menace shoes didn't make me laugh at all, but him treating his family like shit I found entertaining).
Season 18 also has the episode where Homer joins the army, it's got the 24 minutes episode, and the kent brockmann episode (which whilst it doesn't deliver on it's premise, has a great premise, if it had been written better I think it could have slotted into season 9 effortlessly) and the one where Fat Tony becomes Maggie's godfather.

I was glad to see that "We're on the Road to D'ohwhere" is at least at number 11. For me, and a lot of other German fans I assume, this episode holds a special place as it was the last one to feature Marge's original German voice actor before she passed away halfway through dubbing this season. For me, *that* was the point that the classic era of Simpsons really came to an end and the show never felt the same afterwards. I doesn't help that the episode has such a downer ending, with Bart missing, Marge in jail in Springfield, Homer in jail in Las Vegas and Lisa left to fend for herself and Maggie.

The series should have just ended there, if nothing else, but to show viewers that the writers are tired of doing this and have officially given up. Yeah, they could tack on "The Simpsons Movie" as the grand finale, but the last regular episode should have been either this one or that season nine episode where Homer becomes sanitation commissioner and floods the town with garbage (it's a fitting metaphor for how Homer's antics that turned the show to trash).

Kiss Kiss Bangalore is the best episode of the Simpsons after the Lingo Dead episode. It's the best episode of season 17 and the best episode of the show all between Lingo and the last season Treehouse of horror or Lisa the Boyscout. It is arguably the last classic episode of the Simpsons.
It had a classic plotline in MacGuyver, it had a classic burns plot, it had great subversive tones, it had a great take on outsourcing and was pro-union. There were a few bad choices that didn't land but far fewer than any other episode.
    Classic.

The disrespect to Road to D'oh-where is a dagger. A dagger through my heart! So many perfect jokes in that one. "I don't want Milhouse." "Quiet, or I'll kill you like I killed intellectual Homer." "Stupid horse, it's a DEER crossing." "I'll look for work in the morning." Every time I watch it I'm in stitches. "DEER crossing"... I'm laughing just typing it.
But thank you for the love of Richard Dean Anderson's hilarious performance. I recently stated watching Stargate SG-1 where he plays his character so stoically and dry, and it works great, but it gives me whole new context to view his unhinged line reads in Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore. "Girls Just Want to Have Sums" is such an interesting time capsule. I'm sure at the time it would have be perceived as vaguely progressive, however years later and under scrutiny the messaging is really rough. The stuff it parodies can be funny, but the conclusion it reaches feels poorly formed and sullies an otherwise funny episode. It's like they were unwilling to make a stance, and in doing so they inadvertently make one.

Ranking season 17 is interesting because of how diverse it is, with a good amount of good and bad episodes, imo. Once we get to season 18 there will be a big difference with more bad episodes than good. For now here's my ranking (I will only explain certain episode's placements and not all of them):
    1. "Regarding Margie" - I get why this one wasn't well received by fans, but honestly I enjoy this episode a lot. The idea of Marge not remembering Homer's likable traits definitely had the potential and for the most part I believe it was done well. The story was great as well. Also personal bias but I love a good amount of the martial episodes. However it's not at all perfect as I think the ending could've been executed better due to how Marge actually remembers Homer.
    2. "The Bonfire of the Manatees" - Another great marital episode which also involves my favorite animal the manatee. I love the manatee support shown in this episode and I also enjoy the beginning a lot. I think the part with Homer staying with his cousins was very pointless and could've easily been cut but otherwise a great episode imo.
    3. "The Italian Bob" - One of the more unique Sideshow Bob episodes that marks a new chapter for the character, and it's very solid.
    4. "Homer Simpson, This Is Your Wife" - Again, big fan of the marital episodes so of course this is high on my list. The Marge portion of the story is very interesting and one I enjoyed a lot. The Homer portion is also good but having a strict wife is way less interesting and not as funny.
    5. "Milhouse of Sand and Fog" - Good episode with regression of the status quo and another good marriage crisis that I personally think is good.
    6. "Marge's Son Poisoning" - B plot is not very good at all but the main story is actually relatable to me as I'm very close with my mom as well. I also enjoy the Bart and Marge relationship and it helps that they are two of my favorite characters.
    7. "Girls Just Want to Have Sums"
    8. "Treehouse of Horror XVI" - Alright ToH but the Mr. Burns segment was awful.
    9. "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story"
    10. "We're on the Road to D'ohwhere"
    11. "The Last of the Red Hat Mamas"
    12. "The Monkey Suit"
    13. "The Girl Who Slept Too Little"
    14. "Marge and Homer Turn a Couple Play" - The only marital episode of this season I didn't like as it was all bickering and it was forgettable.
    15. "Million Dollar Abie"
    16. "See Homer Run"
    17. "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore"
    18. "Bart Has Two Mommies" - The Marge and Ned stuff is actually one of the highlights of this episode for me. The story was bad and the b plot was at most a meh.
    19. "My Fair Laddy" - I'm not a fan of musicals or Groundskeeper Willie so this boring episode already lost points but then has one of the worst b plots the show has. Who else would make a story about pants? Seriously.
    20. "Homer's Paternity Coot"
    21. "Simpsons Christmas Stories" - I hate all of the three story episodes. I like consistency in the episode I'm watching and this isn't it. One of the only Christmas episodes I really despise since most Christmas episodes are really good (especially "Marge Be Not Proud," one of my favorite episodes).
    22. "The Wettest Stories Ever Told" - This three story episode is worse as it just as forgettable as all the other ones but more so. I literally don't remember this episode or "Simpsons Christmas Stories" as both bore me. Nothing good at all comes from this episode. It's also the episode that was the least viewed on premiere night season 17 btw.

I’ve always thought The Girl Who Slept Too Little was a fair bit better, feeling like a proto-Halloween of Horror in places. Well this was a great list to watch. I will admit that I haven't seen some of the episodes on this list, which is why I didn't know what to think of where they got placed. I still haven't seen Marge's Son Poisoning, See Homer Run, My Fair Laddy, or Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore. It was cool to see The Girl Who Slept Too Little and The Monkey Suit on the list, since I consider them pretty solid and watchable episodes, and wasn't sure what to expect from Treehouse of Horror 16, since I tend to not think about that one too much, except for the final segment with the characters turning into their Halloween costumes which I always found cool. I was surprised The Seemingly Never Ending Story wasn't at least top 3 since I really like that one, and I do not mind some of the plot beats, since I just really like the episode as a whole. Overall, still a great countdown to watch as always, and look forward to the Season 18 Retrospective and Top 10 Season 18 countdown. Great work as always dude.

Homer's Paternity Coot is underrated. Yes its obvious that the man isnt his father, but if you can look past that it has some interesting character writing for Grampa, deliberately lying by switching the DNA tests to give Homer a better father figure. I also really like the suspense with the treasure hunt. Every other attempt at suspense in Season 17 failed, but the one with Homer underwater and out of oxygen works well for me.

Both involve Homer and Bart going on a road trip and getting into random hijinks (and in a rarity, they don't have any conflict with each other), while Marge and Lisa stay home and do something exceedingly boring that yields some classic quotes. These are the episodes that gave us Senior Ding-Dong and a (possibly undead) Vincent Price. The third act of the A plot in both episodes kind of goes off the rails; in SCS they forgo actual football jokes for a plot about sneaking into the stadium and dealing with security and Rupert Murdoch; in MH, Homer and Bart's trucking adventure suddenly involves a conspiracy of truckers with self-driving trucks who don't want the secret to get out, lest they lose their jobs. Personally, I prefer Maximum Homerdrive just because the A plot is strictly focused on Homer and Bart, while Sunday Cruddy Sunday has half the men in town plus a new guest character (voiced by the always-funny Fred Willard). But what do you think? Are they actually not all that similar at all? Am I crazy for enjoying them so much? Is Vincent Price dead or what?

Can we talk about how off the references were in this season? And not just out of left field of El Kabong randomly popping up in "Springfield Blows" and Commander McBragg leading the count for Burns's and Richman's dual. Every so often, there's an old Simpsons episode where the commentary/satire is so specific to when it was written, you watch it and say "oh yeah, THAT happened." The Mayoral race being a parody of the California Governors race where AHnold and a bunch of increasingly goofy D-list celebrities threw their hats into the ring year after the fact. The Lion King musical also well after the musical made waves, including a weird reference to Spamalot (the streamers for blood bit which happened during the Black Knight segment). And I'm still wondering if the "girls and boys learn different" plot was based on anything. And also, I honestly didn't know the Pagliacci bit where Krusty sings "We are out of Rice Krispies" was an actual Rice Krispy commercial.

The order would be different, but my shortlist would be mostly the same. A cursory pass, highly subject to change with more thought, would look something like this:
    1. The Girl Who Slept Too Little
    2. Marge's Son Poisoning
    3. The Seemingly Never-Ending Story
    4. The Monkey Suit
    5. See Homer Run
    6. My Fair Laddy
    7. Milhouse of Sand and Fog
and then three out of We're on the Road to D'ohwhere, Million Dollar Abie, Regarding Margie, and Homer and Marge Turn a Couple Play to round out the top 10, in some order. Bart Has Two Mommies has standout moments but overall is lacking something for me. It'd probably be #12. As for Girls Just Want to Have Sums, it rests way too much on "haha aren't men and women different!?" humour which I can't relate to. "We've been Yentled!" is such a great line, though.

See Homer Run is one of my favorite simpsons episodes. Im definitely biased since it’s one I randomly had downloaded on my iPod touch as a kid, but I just love that episode so much. To me it feels very in line with classic simpsons, with so many funny scenes. I love Homer giving the safety assembly and causing a fire. The one liner with Smithers and the music teacher in the car always gets me, as does Nelson’s prank on Homer. I also love the stem cell research joke rainier wolfcastle makes. I agree that the episode sort of diverts with the running for mayor plot, but I personally think the Lisa and Homer moments are so good through the episode I really don’t mind. The idea of Lisa pushing homer to run for mayor is cute, and the way Homer and Lisa come together really reminded me of some older episodes.
Back in the 2000s, Apple released a collection of episodes called “Best of Homer” which has now been renamed to “Homer Knows Best.” I had that downloaded on my iPod touch as a kid, and it really shaped my view of the show for the future. This collection is all Homer and Lisa focused episodes, the ones where they get into their relationship. Episodes like Lisa’s substitute and see homer run. I think it’s a great collection that gives fans a lot of perspective on how important these two characters relationship is.

Even the best episodes of the season there are the effects of Flanderization in play. Skinner is only a momma's boy and Flanders is that crazy religious and overly protective to his sons. I don't mind the latter, because he has a in-universe reason to up it to eleven after his wife died.
My top picks would be #1 Girls just wanna have sums #2 Bart has two mommies and #3 Marge's sons poisoning.

I keep forgetting you want the Treehouse of Horror to be, well, horror. And Halloween-ey. That's fair, but I've long since just started thinking of it as "cool short stories" that can be horror, sci-fi, philosophical, whatever, and don't have to worry about realism or canonicity.
Did you mention in a previous video somewhere potentially continuing the Thanksgiving Horror, and the Treehouse of Horror, and then allowing them more freedom while keeping each respective episode more true to its theme? I wouldn't mind letting the Treehouse get more horror-focused if there was another outlet for the less-horror-based shorts.
