  • I'm planning to do an analysis on this match as I thought it was really fun to watch. It helped to analyze more efficiently after I edited out all the walking in between points, and thought it would be pretty cool to just upload that first :)
The video was originally recorded by the youtube channel Badminton Universe, so please check them out! :D

Yes, it is more entertaining to watch at this angle but no it should not be their standard as it does not show the whole court accurately.

Ok, Momota has been ranked #1 for a while now, and I've been watching him. I noticed that he plays differently depending on who he's against. Sometimes he plays at a high pace and sometimes he's more patient. I think his greatest strength is spot-on strategy for each encounter and patience. He's got very good defense but not on par with Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan or even Chen Long when they were at their peak, at least not yet. I notice Momoto does a small but non-zero amount of footwork mistakes that force him to rush to the shuttle. He still gets there because he's freaking Kento Momota and he's in incredible physical condition, but I think that's one key difference with for example peak Lee Chong Wei or Lin Dan. Very hard to find an instance of them off their footing, even when they get surprised by a trick shot. It makes me appreciate why they're living legends.

Yeah, watching the world championships this year, I couldn’t help but think that the level right now isn’t quite as high as it was before. But I might just be totally biased. If momota played Lin Dan or Lee Chong Wei back in the day, he probably would have stepped up to the challenge

@@BadmintonwithJeffrey Well he's world #1 for a reason, and certainly the hardest player to win against on the circuit today. But I agree with your sentiment of today's level not being quite as high as a few years ago. But it also means anything can happen.

Romain Gauthier Back in 2011 or 2012 and times before that, we’ve not only got the legends, but also many other great players. Nowadays, momota is the kind, and to be honest there are only Shiyuqi and ginting who can give momota a challenge, and maybe antonsen as well.

Hats off to momota but kidambi also played a very mature game by keeping the shuttle low, cross and simple in the long rallies which is the only key to winning momota. For example-Tokyo exit of momota agains kwang-hee and the rivalry of ginting-momota is only because these players majorly play on drives and keep the shuttle low and do not allow momota the space and freedom to move the shuttle at various positions in court.
