We took a trip to the Houston, TX Micro Center and upgraded my brother's SERIOUSLY OUTDATED gaming PC while we were there! I built this rig over 6 years ago and it sports an old, low-frequency Xeon and R9 Fury X. My poor brother... let's help him out!

The hate on the RTX 4060 Ti is real. And I get it - every tech CZcamsr clobbered it. But Brandon wanted an efficient card with DLSS for some of the games he plays. The 4060 wasn't released as of time of filming. And those screaming "6700 XT!!!" need to understand that not everyone has a preference for AMD - even when perf./$ is clearly on its side. You'll see even more of it when season 2 of Gear Up airs. Personally, in an $800 budget, I'd have gone with a used RTX 3080 or thereabouts for around $400, but it obviously wasn't possible during this in-store challenge. I hope this clears things up a bit. Thanks for watching!
The 4060ti is as good or better than the 6700XT, around the same price and if you are upgrading from an old PC, there is nothing wrong with it. Same deal with the 7600 from AMD. People need to get over it honestly. If you have a 3060, yeah sure the 4060ti is dogwater for an upgrade.
gah at that 4060ti. You should of put in some extra and got a better card.
@@edwinwelch1946 Or he could have gotten a 4060ti and you can continue living your life lol
@@AxTROUSRxMISSLE I live my life just fine thank you. As a PC gamer myself with a higher end rig I just feel some parts could of been chosen better here
@@edwinwelch1946 I agree
This is how brothers work, my sons are exactly that way. My oldest cleans his gaming PC weekly, and keeps it spotless. My youngest keeps his on the ground, has cats, and doesn't worry about it until it needs a hair cut.
Let's just agree that our favorite is the one that cleans his weekly
I am impressed that he simply adapted to the unit he had for all those 8 years. Got a lot a usage out of the computer you built, you should be proud of him. Now, if you could teach him how to clean his computer once a year, he will achieve the pinnacle of Gaming Zen Mastery.
yeah I am constantly upgrading stuff. i built my first rig about 4yrs ago I went from a R5 3600, 16GB DDR4 3200, a $65 MATX motherboard and a refurbished GTX 1060 to what i have now a R9 5900X, RTX 3080, 32GB DDR4 3600, and i just upgraded my mobo yesterday to a MSI MEG B550 Unify-X. In that 4yrs I've had 3 different CPUs, 4 different GPUs, and 4 different motherboards. Luckily I've been able to sell all my old major components, for example i bought the RTX 3080 used on ebay a few months ago for $560 and sold my RTX 2070 Super one day after listing it for $225. It's time to upgrade my RAM now to 64GB I think.
Cringes in FX6600/HD7760. Yes, those still exists. Bought a Steam Deck to replace it.
Once a month it should be cleaned.
@@NonLegitNation2 Most of my past gpus have been used, and upgrading the pc is more fun than actually gaming sometimes lol. Also great that AM4 supported so many generations, and just so simple to drop in a new cpu and breathe even more life into it
@@Bdot888 exactly. That is the reason why I haven't upgraded to AM5 yet, because I don't want to have to buy a new CPU, mobo and RAM. I think I'll stick with my R9 5900X for atleast 2yrs, or until I find a good deal on a 5950X. Hopefully within 2yrs the price overall for AM5 components will drop some.
I would find a new brother since he hasn’t updated your computer 😮
That’s like cooking for the chef, that just doesn’t happen.
@@nextgen_intelligenceyes it fkn does, we love not having to cook lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@Cr0frog 🤣🤣🤣 but you know it isn’t as good!
Parts seen in this video.
CPU Ryzen 5 5600
GPU MSI 4060ti Ventus 3X
Motherboard Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC
Case Lian Li 205 M Mesh
SSD Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
Looks like he also has a ARGB hub and cable extension kit as well.
1TB, but yeah.
I know it was a typo but... 1GB for the SSD made me lol.
Win 2.0 would be jealous of that much space.
Yeah a 1 GB 980 Pro wouldn’t get very far.
The motherboard was a mediocre choice. Those DS3 boards almost always have garbage VRM components, and mostly without cooling.
wow 4060 ti is super overkill for a 5600, you want no bottleneck or at most slight GPU bottleneck, but 5600+ 4060 ti is definitely CPU bottleneck and not even that small.
Afaik best match for a 5600 is a 3060 ti, and 4060 ti is basically a 3070 ti, so cpu bottleneck.
You should take his old system, or what's left of it, and do a PCDC video on it, clean that beautiful case up
I'll tell him to hold on to it for me!
Perfect garage system blow-out and scrub/hose-down candidate back home! #Repurpose @GregSalazar
A PCDC on his old comp would be fun 😀
I would love to see a fresh build in that case.
Hey everyone, I'm curious after watching an upgrade vid like this: what to do w old stuff that just is at the end of its useful life?
Love how the build turned out, actually looks awesome with those cable extensions and the RAM
Agreed, better turnout than I thought it'd be!
The build looks great Greg but it looks like team red but it is not...
@@notrixamoris3318you can have a red pc without it being AMD, some people just like the colour?
@@jakeewart5769 good point...
Wow. If someone told me the specs of that PC without telling me the parts were open box, I'd have NEVER thought you could get those specs on an $800 budget. 🌋
Micro center perks I guess, here in mexico the regular 4060 is $520 USD equivalent alone, watching US pricing makes me jealous.
Love to see Josh back in a tech-tuber video 🎉 Awesome build video too!
Thanks for watching!
@@GregSalazar Well - thanks for bringing the cool content!
The Double Helix in the front of the case is still awesome to look at. It's amazing that the AIO is still functioning considering that it was a much maligned version that many people thought would break because of the glass tube coming off of the block.
We used several of those AIOs for years earlier on in the channel's life. Never had issues with the glass tubing. Most people weren't smacking them with hardware hahah.
@@GregSalazar Yep, I remember you recommended them and used them a bunch. Almost built with it myself a few times, but the people the PCs were being built for always chose a different AiO with more RGB.
Yeah they didn't really rehabilitate the build - they just replaced it.
Oh man, so good to see Josh! It's been quite some time and I was hoping he was doing alright. Great work on your bro's build Greg! You are totally right, there's just something about the black/red builds for gaming PC's, it just works so well. He also lucked out so well with that RAM. Good pairing. Keep up the excellent work you do!
Holy shit! Josh! Last time I saw him in a video Kyle was still called awesomesauce and Jay was in the desert sitting on a Fractal case. Good to see him doing well
I'm relatively new to the PC space (at least insofar as looking into builds), may I ask who Josh is? Not a familiar face to me. Also Jay on a Fractal case in the desert, what LMAO
@@Lyander25He used to work for Fractal Design, I've seen him in some ads with Jay.
@@looks-suspicious appreciate it!
@@looks-suspicious I still think of him in my head as Fractal Josh from the old Awesome Hardware streams haha
your brother lives in micro center? amazing.
He's so lucky.
Sweet build greg and well done! Congrats to your bro for the upgrade! 👌
Been a while since I've seen Fractal Josh. Good to see him
That's a solid build for a reasonable price. I almost forgot that could be done. Great work you two!
I definitely wasn't expecting to see you at the houston microcenter but it was cool to meet you! I like the cable extensions that you used.
Sweet build you managed to make for your brother. I wish I had had a Micro Center near me. I'm planning to upgrade to a new pc build using a 7800x3d later this year.
Thanks for watching!
Also still rocking a 2016 pc. The pain is real.
Omg bro seeing Josh in a tech vid again is legendary!!!
Poor Josh though having to suffer on the backseat like that. Crime against humanity...😅
I'm sure that was a nice upgrade! The only I would have done different would have been to spend the last $50 on an aftermarket cpu cooler...
Such a shame that we don't have Micro Center in Europe. Oh and that old case was superb, I would have loved to have had that. Unique.
Moat states in the US don't even have a Micro Center.
Greetings from Houston Greg! Glad to know you were in town! Love that MicroCenter, picked up my favorite Ifixit tools there! Love your channel and keep it up!
microcenter builds never gets old!
I got so excited seeing the background when you were talking to your brother when you were in a microcenter, I thought there was one I didn't know about here that was local... guess ill have to wait for the Miami one still... Microcenter FL needs you!
Great video. Awesome upgrades. Be sure to let us know how the new system works.
Seems like you had a good brothers time 🎉😊
Dang about 5 hours away , would had been awesome to meet you . Fun upload with your bro 🤘
These upgrade videos are fun, but it would be interesting if you were able to do some before/after benchmarks to see what improvements were had.
Well done! Love a good field build at Micro Center
How nice brotherly loved moment.
Michigan here... love how this video shows that the struggle is real when trying to upgrade a pc on a budget.
Great video! Love the new rig
Just built my friend a 7800X3D, RX7900 XTX Red Devil. So happy for you guys.
Keep the video going with the bro and review from him!
Its good to see Josh again!
Great video
So many sweet deals! Also the ram kit is a beast for an older build. It's like he perfectly chose what to go along with the ram
Cant beat building PC and making people happy.. good times. Thanks Greg.
His computer would have been a cool PCDC episode.
If I had more time I definitely would have filmed an episode 😅
The red fans from the old case would have looked good as 3 exhaust fans
Yea I agree that case looked pretty cool
I'd love to see his face when he loads his first game on that rig after riding that dinosaur for so long...🤯
Man that was so fun!!!!! I build PC for my sister and my brother but they are not as invilved as your brother !!! That was really fresh piece of content! ^^
Glad you enjoyed it!
All the employees at the Houston MicroCenter are super helpful. Never had a problem with anything I purchased from that store. It's too bad you didn't have enough money for a new power supply and memory so that the old computer could be cleaned up and used for a Linux OS, but he could still do that in the future.
Got to take care of your brother!! ❤
solid upgrade.
Good choice of case, nice build
Sorry Mr. Studios. I was busy doing subsistence. But now I can enjoy watching this great content you do
Watching this video, I was impressed with what he got for his money. Only thing that wasn't mentioned, was what cpu he got. One think I would've changed, was the cpu cooler. For someone that let's his pc get a dirty as he does, looks aren't everything too him. So I would've passed on the cable mods.
It took a bit of effort, it's a Ryzen 5600 non X.
I wish I knew you were in the area....would have loved top see you in person
That build is sick, the only thing that bothered me was that there was no exhaust fan, just some cheap black fan would have done the trick, or just take a fan from the old build.
Huge fan of your show man in in HTX!
That turned out looking great!
Thanks!
i love it!!! I wish me and my brother could be this close....
Iven the old ram the color matches the cables and the case fans lights cool rig.
Great upgrade, I'm sure the graphics will be much better for whatever games he plays.
Random Josh appearance. Love it
You should definitely cover the new Miami location when it opens up next year!
he’s in Houston rn I’m so exited may run into Greg can’t wait
My micro center!! Great store!!
Nice color of your Seiko 5 Sports Automatic watch Greg!
13:39 - Right when you put the cables down, my ps4 controller went to sleep and disconnected and windows played the "Device Disconnected" sound 😂😅😂
8 years old dust...RESPECT MY MAN
This reminds me of my dads 2005 PC. I cut the motherboard tray out, and made a DIY open frame out of wood. Add a sata ssd and now I can watch Formula 1 in peace. Awesome video Greg!
would be nice to see you doing a video on his old platform to see how it holds up
Dang Greg, I didn't know you were in my neck of the woods. I live about 10 minutes from that micro center. Killer job man. Got to keep on helping your family out then no matter what, no matter how bad to get on your nerves. Love the content man. Take it easy
JOSH!! and you have a new another Bother! 🎉 awesome!! i wanted to see his reaction playing games😅
I'm getting Resident Evil vibes from that case!!
Props on the Seiko 5 and the Seiko 5 GMT. Great watches in their price bracket.
Besides Bikes and PCs, I collect watches too.
I was there and i watched you build that pc! I wanted to take a pic but you looked busy 😂
I would like to see his reaction to the new setup.
I met him there! i was super happy to see him
I love that case I have one just missing the original aio for it
I really need to go to the one and only micro center in my state, that looks so cool and fun, PC doods dream
match stick man besides a muscle buster is what I kept thinking when ever they were both on screen.
I'm glad to see he went with AM4 so that the RAM could be reused.
Lga 1700 also has ddr4 boards .
I would have reused the case also .
I didn't see what CPU he got though
love my Air 100 case for my work pc, 10400 & 3060 combo. Mostly for CAD drafting and day trading
That setup seems really power efficient! I have never been to a Microcenter yet, but the Houston location is about 4 hours away from me. I could take a trip there and spend a whole day in Microcenter lol
the good ol' ds3h board. Ive had a few of those
Josh is like that dude that keeps popping up in pictures from years gone , even a painting with him in it somewhere
Was Fractal Josh just kicking it in the Micro Center when you showed up? Please come to AZ Micro Center!!!!!
Accord gang. I love my 10th gen. Truck in HUGE
i love and want that polo top, so clean
:-D
I love that I live 10 minutes away from that Micro Center.
That rig was old. Wish I lived closer to you or micro center. My gigabyte mobo is am3+ with ide and sata hhd supported. The build was in 2011. Your a nice brother.
@6:41 - Is that Fractal Josh? Cool! Haven't seen him since he left Fractal Design.
How the hell did you have such great RAM in that old thing? It must have cost a fortune when you first bought it. It took a long time for RAM that fast to come down in price. Absolutely nailed the build BTW. 4060Ti is perfect for what he needs, and very power efficient. You can’t go wrong.
Unfortunately, it's CL 17, so it'll fall back to CL 18 on Ryzen, which isn't that great... but still fine and usable.
I mean even the other components are Xeon and Fury X. It's basically TOTL when it was build
5:30 lots of Asus boards on that old shelf there. If I had a MC nearby, I would see if I could get a deal on an Asus Z790 board or maybe an X670e board and update the BIOS.
When you do the math and figure out what you exactly need is always pretty nice
it pays off to stay up late, new vid :)
OMG you're in my hometown! Microcenter is a dangerous place...for your wallet.
Dang should have kept the tower and put more into the comp.....still a nice tower. I really liked that tower!
My Microcenter has those RFID boxes so you can hold on to them in your cart until you check out. I like it.
Brother to the rescue
Great video. I wonder did he pull an all nighter when he got home.
BRO! I remember when you built this PC! That was forever ago!
i hope that micro center would come to finland
Awe man legit the week I left home you come and visit 😭
My case is so good with preventing dust that I barely need to clean it but I still do every few months. It amazes me how many people just don't clean lol. It's like your house, it needs cleaning! Some people just don't seem bothered by it lol. I finally got my friend to keep her PC off the flloor when I built her a new one!
I see a lot of people not believing he played for so long on that PC, and I'm not sure why. He had a 1060 starter rig (basically), but with much better RAM. There are a ton of these rigs out there, basically the majority of gamers are using something similar, and they are using them for a reason: They are dirt cheap to build, there are plenty of them floating around on Ebay for even cheaper, and they will literally play anything... just with pretty low settings when you start to move into modern titles.
