The show.was absolutely dispicable. The punchline to every joke was nothing more than "haha, some people are nerdy like this" and "haha, these people know these nerdy things about math."
I caught an episode a friend was watching, and they were playing a trivia game, and the answer was "rhombic hexacontahedron", and I knew it immediately, and said it out loud when they did. And the punchline was that they knew it. How hilarious and ridiculous it is that people know this. Fuck th big bang theory writers. They made this impressive effort to learn the things I care about and made a punchline out of the fact that people like me care about it.

I never watched the Big Bang Theory. The reason is that I'd see it on at someone's house, and catch little moments and clips here and there. And no matter how many times I caught it on TV, I always got deja vu, since the jokes always seemed to be different variations of the same premise:
Non-Nerd: "Hey nerd, do you like mainstream thing number 271?"
Nerd: "No, actually I think you'll find that mainstream thing number 271 is actually mathematically impossible and my OCD/autism/anxiety finds it to be deeply unpleasant"
    (Canned audience laughter)
Nerd #2: "I think you'll find that you're confusing mainstream thing number 271 for mainstream thing number 172 because you are a nerd."
    (Louder canned audience laughter)
Nerd: "Well you would say that, since you like nerdy thing number 585 rather than nerdy thing number 428"
    (Side-splitting audience laughter)
    ...
But I've never like written a rant about that, since it would be unfair. I would need to watch the show properly to give it a fair shake and a real chance. But it seems from other people that it's a pretty fair assessment of the show.

Sorry to hear that story about your school life. Just want you to know that the moment you said "the school did nothing but tortured me" but you "eventually learn everything on your own" is so touchy for me.
Because i've been through my high school under a same situation with some difference. My senior high school was also a nightmare, with picky class"mates" and non-supportive teachers. So i have been always obssessed to learn every interesting subjects untill now, to hide from their shadows and to proof myself, despite i'm 30 now already.
And i also don't like the show TBBT by their way of making fun of "nerd speaking nerdy stuff". Instead, i realize myself always had "second order laughters" by watching the show: I laughed at the canned laughters instead of at the jokes/scenes. Because to me, it's so amusing that someone would think it'd funny to, e.g. "verify the difference of distributions using chi-square test" in a casino. But i do think the TBBT show did one thing right: it exposes the crualty under the social symbolic architecture, instead of covering the conflicts under hypothetical "mutual understanding": if the problem is not resolved, how much understanding does it cost to recover a piece of wund? A poisonous show covers the needle with curtain, a hurtful, but good, show tells the truth, while a even better media work encourages one to take action in the real life to make the small vicinity around us better.

I had a similar experience with the show.
I have Autism and O.C.D., and I've always been compared to Sheldon, even by my own family. And I really enjoyed the show, because I really liked Sheldon. Until, one day, I was watching clips from the show on CZcams, and started reading the comments. I realized that many people actually hated Sheldon and all people like him. That is, they hated people like me. And that made notice how every character in the show are abusive towards Sheldon, too, and how the show exaggerated Sheldon's behavior and made him abusive. Even the way they wrote his relationship with Amy, it made anxious about how I behave around people, specially people I care about.
_The Big Bang Theory_ is an extremely bigoted show. I hate it. But it was fundamental for me to understand how society sees me. It was extremely cathartic. I wonder if that was intentional (it probably wasn't). I think everyone should watch it, and then be told "This is how society sees us, we need to fight against that.". I still love Sheldon, not because he is an accurate depiction of me, but because, when it comes to how society treats us, we're in the same boat.

If there's one thing I'm glad about the internet for (and it's many things really, but shh) it's that it's given so much more access to the tools and visibility that neurodivergent people in particular needed to get the art that was in their heads into the hearts and minds of other people. Representation for ND folks has gotten so much better over the past decade or so as a result.
Our stories finally get to be told by us rather than by others looking in and that's so, so important.
Thanks for the added perspective on this one, buddy.

I can empathize with your story as another geek who suffered bullying. But I would never take a comedy to heart especially a sitcom.
All my favourite sitcoms & comedies are about assholes. I find it hard to the funny in sitcoms where the characters learn & grow. I just don't find sentimentality or goodness to be particularly funny.
It's that gen X/Millennial nihilistic style of humour. Seinfeld was my favourite sitcom growing up & now it is "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" that is my favourite. A show that was originally going to be titled "Jerks" 😅.

I never liked it and wouldn't watch it and made fun of those that did because on tv, the geniuses nerds with their insecurities, train of thoughts and need habits were funny and almost cool where as in real life, the same people that found Sheldon cool would find those like him in their lives like me something to bully.
Fortunately for me, I hit a growing spurt right after starting college at 16 that the bullies didn't see and once graduated with bachelor's in psychology at 19 and decided to join military then ended up in the special forces as a medic before I returned home. My high school reunion was awesome. They got fat, I got 2 degrees and medic lic and was a trained killer/healer. No one bullies me or my friends anymore. I kept my nerdy friends now 45 years, since kindergarten. But I got sidetracked tooting my own horn. I apologize.
Your bullies didn't make you weaker or push you away from your destined life. They made you stronger by focusing more on your studies and they pushed you into 1 of the hardest, most prestigious careers in the world where you now teach others one of the hardest subjects in the world and you do it in a humorous, entertaining way. You not only overcome a language barrier but use it to separate yourself and providing the spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. While our bullies struggle toi find happiness in their predestined lives, we have overcome obstacles that we couldn't have dreamed of doing before the bullies hurt us. Our bullies are not the antagonists in our story, they are the protagonists to our orign story. When the world thought we were down for the count, we were just merely catching our 2nd wind.

Yeah... I've only seen a couple of episodes, and felt that they were a lot more into poking fun at nerds than laughing with them. So I didn't watch it. My brother loves it though--but I don't think he's so much of a nerd as me, so just sees it as a funny show. Just a shame a show would masquerade as being about the nerdy characters when really it's from a separate bully's point of view who sees them as just weirdos.

It's a general misconception. Sitcoms are made (just as the most of any other productions) to generate the income. That's all ;-)
This episode, if it would have ended the way you described it would be too unrealistic IMO. The truth is, people don't change much. It's because restructuring the brain requires an enormous effort. All of our past, written in our brain structures, determines our behavior. Without any awareness or exploration of the way we behave the way we do, it is almost impossible to change the way we think and behave (exceptions: traumatic experiences or a sudden and drastic change of the social environment).
Getting back to TBBT - all of the characters changed somehow but not extremely. I see it as a good thing. Truth is, "Nerds" are laughed at in this series, but also are people with a basic knowledge deficiency (Zac, Penny), disabilities (Kripke, Stuart), etc. Your perception of the show is subjective, the story you tell to yourself is in your head and it's based on your experience. You may even relive the trauma while seeing those kinds of scenes. You can change this too but it also requires effort.

Penny grows up and is successful in business. Leonard learens to accommodate Penny, and she, him. Likewise Sheldon finds his better half, Amy, is not a semi-circle, but the Yin to his Yang.
Even Wolowitz settles down with Bernadette. Sticking to real life, Raj stands alone.
That's six out of seven who grow, change, get better., Not bad at all.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The episode you hate is still a fine display of human weakness. The bully is only decent when drunk and no longer insecure. Sheldon and Leonard are too decent, without more mature perspective and reservation.
This is comedy, which Aristotle said is based on the ludicrous. And it is comedy, not tragedy, that has the pessimistic view of life.

    • @HighlyEntropicMind
      @HighlyEntropicMind  Před rokem +3

I respectfully disagree, they don't really grow
Wolowitz replaced his mom with Bernardette, the show makes this abundantly clear. He didn't change, he just found another mom
Leonard liked Penny only because she was attractive, there never was any other reason. He always saw Penny as a price to win. This attitude never changed, not even when he won the prize
Penny settles for Leonard because he's a safe option, but not because she's passionate about him. She failed in acting, and she failed in love, and she settled in both for the best deal she could find
Sheldon learned to be a bit more tolerant of others, but his romantic partner is someone who is exactly like him, except female... Is that really so far away from his comfort zone?
In my opinion, the only couple in the show with any chemistry was Sheldon and Penny, and if the writers had had any courage they would have gone for it, and it would have been amazing
Sheldon would have really needed to learn to accept other people, and Penny would have learned that success, emotional and professional, can take unexpected shapes. Maybe she could have been casted in a new scifi show, one of those that become cult classics, and she would have to go to a ton of conventions, with Sheldon...
Think about it and tell me if you honestly think that wouldn't have been better than how they ended up

As to Penny. from the first meeting, she was meant for Leonard. That's equally clear for "Shamy."
Sheldon and Amy are the same species, cross-fertile, male and female. ,Amy is yin to Sheldon's yang. We knew they were destined from the time she asked him to spank her. Likewise the complementary disciplines: psychology is inside to out, physics is outside to in. Perfect.
