I didn’t know George before 1990 when he came to SDSU Jazz ensemble and sat next to me during a rehearsal. We got done with chart and he gave me and old sigh and a “tisk, tisk.” I said “can you play it better old man?” He smiled and said “blind, without a chart and playing your trombone!” I handed him my trombone and he closed his eyes, of course he played the chart perfectly. Loved George and his antics! Super friendly, full of love for music, his wife and family.
Whoa. That's amazing that you got to meet him. I just started playing bass trombone, so I hopped to see some good examples when I stumbled across this.

Just listen to it and play it! There is nothing on any George Roberts recordings that are difficult to play. Compared to the great orchestral trombonists soloist repertoire, his stuff is grade school level.

The Band was by Count Basie.

The arrangement was Riddle. All pros love playing Riddle arrangements. He was a bone player in the Tommy Dorsey band which only hired crack players.
