Was thinking the exact same thing. My father has severe arthritis, I have fibromyalgia. I mean, shoe horns aren't as prevalent as they USED to be, but they've existed for decades to help putting on "step-in" shoes easier...

My father could not wear a backless or older style slip on shoes. He almost always used a shoe horn, even when he was a young agile man (always had two meat feet). A high arch and instep meant he could not walk in backless or slipon shoes. He used a shoe horn to don almost all shoes, which also preserved the stiffness in the upright back of his shoes. After having a broken foot, less flexibility in that foot made the shoehorn usually a necessity. When he became a bit less agile, mostly due to age, he shifted to a longer handled shoe horn. My dad would sympathize with the specific didfficulties you face as an amputee, but he would wonder why you consider not being able to just step into any shoe and go a notable problem.

I've recently been dealing with the sudden loss of mobility and being able to do stupid things like put my socks and shoes on. I got some Kiziks about 2 months ago and I freaking love them! I've been using a long, telescoping shoehorn... and that's great when I'm at home... but I hated having to bring it along if I were going to a friend's house... or having to worry I wouldn't be able to get my shoes back on after a visit. Being able to slip on the Kiziks and go has been a game changer... I had to take two trips last month and not having to carry my shoehorn through TSA security just to put my shoes back on quelled my anxiety!

I have a genuine question for you, because I haven’t been able to get anyone to reply to me. The problem that she shows in this video confuses me. Because as an able-bodied person, I also tried to slip my shoes on the way she showed and I can’t do it either. If I try to cram my foot into my shoe without using my hands it just crushes the back just like hers. So I guess my question would be is this actually an amputee problem or does she just not understand how to put shoes on? I could understand if she didn’t have a bend in her knee why she might not be able to reach her shoes with her hands. But in this case, her amputation is below the knee so she can sit down normally and bend over or bend over standing up. Please help me understand why this is exclusively an amputee problem and not some thing that pretty much everyone has to deal with.

Jo, look for "Lock Laces" or s knock off product. They are elastic shoe laces in a range of sizes and colors. The trick is that once you get them adjusted, that's it. You can take any shoe and just stretch the back enough to slip in, and the eladtic HOLDS it that way. They have a slip catch, so you can also leave a few extra inches and just pull up/down the catch for a quick adjustment.
I haven't tied a lace, crushed a heel, or tripped on a lose shoelace once in about four years of using them. Amazon as usual.

You know. When I was a home nurse. I dealt with a ton of elderly people who struggled with their shoes. So the solution was this type of shoe that opened right up. And velcroed together at the top. It was super cool!

I am a bilateral amputee below the knee & I can relate so much to the lack of good options for shoes that are easy to put on, for those who don't know, a prosthetic foot is a rubbery material and is much more grippy to surfaces which makes putting shoes on more difficult than a real foot where it can slide in with ease

As other commenters have noted, there are many people who cannot just don a slipon or backless shoe and go, for a variety of reasons. And many people must or do rely on a shoehorn to assist in donning a shoe. I have used a piece of pasteboard as a substitute for a shoehorn and once found an index card to be an adequate aid.

Modify (add) a race car steering wheel coupler between the prostectic foot and shin. Providing a " quick disconnect " of the foot. Did this for a friend of mine who lost a leg in Afghanistan. He now has several different "feet" with different footwear for an easy switch. I know it sounds a little strange but it did simplify his life...

I have 2 pairs, one boot the other walmart sneakers. If it's spring or summer the sneaker is on the prosthetic, and if I'm not going to walk alot I'll just throw on the boot because it's easier to slip on. LOL. In the autumn and winter I use the boots only. Great video! Thanks for the tips!

German sandals might be comfy as well. In general, our style of sandal is a flipflop without the inbetween toe stuff (ew) and a second strap further back to stabilise. Most german outdoor sandals have something on the heel to make sure you can do funky things like run or climb in them. I personally have just bent the heel holder over on mine to use them as houseshoes. I don't even consider that they could slip of and I can put them on without bending the knee.

I have these shoes that are almost exactly like tennis shoes but they dont have the back piece and are fuzzy on the inside, they are super comfortable, they're not for doing any heavy work but a trip to the store, an outing, or just doing cleaning around the house they're the perfect shoes, I use them to go on walks too when I take my dogs out.
Idk if they'd work with prosthetics tho it could be something to look into to try cuz they really are nice

Someone needs to invent a prosthetic shoe, that would be your skin tone, fit over your prosthesis, and be malleable for your shoes. You'd put your shoe on the cover shoe, and then slip it on.
    Kizik needs to sponsor you.
