I actually use traktor for sketch ideas, then drop everything into Abelton and mix it again there so I don’t have to keep recording over and over. Using my DJ equipment is a good tool to come up with different ideas for mixes.

It's no difference than when you play live. Learn gain staging when you play, and all you need to do is to set the levels at 0 db in your recording software. Gain staging is when you use the channel EQ/Trim(Gain) to set the level for each track before playing it out, so that you always push the fader all the way up. Use your head phones to determine if the levels are correct by switching between the tracks, because the level meter will not always be correct, but make sure you don't go in the red. Depending on what mixer you use, going in the red could ruin your recording. Pioneer mixers usually have a few db head room even on all red leds, but other mixers don't.
If possible, use the ''Rec out'' on the mixer to your recording device, because that bypasses the main volume, and as long your gain staging on the faders are correct, the volume will stay constant in your recording even when you lower or rise the master volume. Or, if you like me are sending the master volume through a computers sound card to an amplifier, capturing the audio in the computer. Then you can still use the volume knob on the amplifier without affecting the recorded audio. Hope this helps and good luck with your recordings.

As long as it's not a promotional mix... no one cares. If it is, and you can not deliver the same in a live performance, you're f****'d. ...and skip that computer to avoid errors created by the computer. Stand alone units and well prepared music provides the best prerequisite to make a successful recording, if you have the skills to play for hours without major errors, like most DJ's need to that play in clubs or at events. If you're not ready for long recordings, do them anyway and use them to evaluate your own mixing. That way you'll progress a lot faster and will soon be able to make an hour or more of (near) perfect mixing. Minor errors that maybe only you notice because you know of them, will only add to the authenticity of the mix. If it's a studio mix where perfect is required, recording each player on separate tracks will make it easier to correct slightly off beat mixes and to tune the ins, outs and levels. But as said, ONLY for studio recordings where perfect is REQUIRED. This will then be considered as a studio mix, and not a DJ mix. Outside the DJ business no one cares, but within... this could make or break you if you're honest about it or not.
Is Adobe audition a free software?
GarageBand is easy for quick edits like this. All good if you’re just recording the audio... No good if you’re doing a video set.

To much work. do my mix live samples while I am playing. A clean mix avoid too many effects and samples. And edit when I done my mix. Bang bang bang
Mix tapes should represent how you sound as a DJ. If you can't play without errors, even for an hour, at home in perfect conditions, how are you suppose to do it for 4-5 hours in front of an audience and the sound bouncing of the walls? Practice until you can do it without editing, or don't do it at all. If you can't deliver the same experience live as on your mix tapes, you're done anyway.
this is the dumbest comment ever. mistakes are made in live djing all the time. When recording "editing" is a large part of completing a project. Imagine a band recording and not editing or rerecording parts in the studio and attempting to get it right in one take, the project would never be finished, yet they perform on stage for hours. In a live setting alot is missed by listeners all the time because the mistakes are made live. NO ONE WANTS A MIXTAPE WITH A BLATANT MISTAKE IN IT every time they listen to it. @@THERoryBreakerATL You need to learn the difference between a reference mixtape and one made for radio or official release. The one referred to here is when you market yourself towards getting gigs and the mixtape is something that will give a potential customer an idea of what they can expect from you when performing. Making a studio edited version will NOT represent you in any way. Minor mistakes are part of mixing live, but if you can't do it without making blatant mistakes, you need more practice. ...or you can do edited versions that sound perfect, as long as you present the mix as such. It's all about being honest about what you're doing and both versions obviously has it's place. All my mixes on my channel are done live in one take, with minor errors in all of them, but still a lot of people enjoy listening to them and I have no comments about ''not being able to enjoy the music because of all the blatant mistakes''. Now and then I also do mixes for radio shows and I still prefer to record them and send them unedited. I leave room for the presenter to add jingles as requested, that's all. Works for me, and anyone booking me will get the same level of mixing as they can hear on my mixtapes. Not worse, not better. As usual when someone burst out and complain about something, they have nothing to show for on their own channel, and you're no exception. Are you a DJ/promoter at all, on any level, to show that you have any knowledge in this area? I've got 35 year in the business as a DJ and promoter and it's my full time job. A requirement from me, to listen to anyone's mixtape, is that it's recorded live, given to me unedited. That tells me immediately if this DJ knows about gain staging, as well basic/advanced mixing and how to arrange a bunch of tracks. Somewhat also what kind of music this DJ are into, but only a real life gig will give the right preferences to make the right choice of tracks, so it's not as important as the above. This is not just an opinion, it's the way I conduct my work and how I filter out DJ's that are not ready for a gig where I'm involved with the bookings or giving recommendations to partners. Unless you already are known for your skills, next step will be to play for an hour in front of me, and if you can't deliver something very similar to your mixtape... bye bye.
