  • Starting the 3.0L Mercruiser engine for the first time in seven months. The engine had been winterized last fall so we have to overcome a bunch of fogging oil in the carburetor and cylinders possibly fouling the spark plugs.

This was a few years ago when I first got it and didn't really know how to start it. Now I give it a few pumps and then leave the accelerator up a little and it starts right up. It does run on 3 cylinders for the first 30 seconds or so when it's cold but then #4 kicks in and it smooths right out. It's almost time to get it running for season again.

I was very puzzled at first because it didn't seem that was easy to start at all. In fact that seemed extremely difficult to start. But then between my actually reading the description, and your saying how they had fogged the engine and carb, it made sense.
Once started, it seems to run nice and smooth!

Hello sir thanks for the video. We’re do you get parts for your boat I have a 1985 Four Winns 190 Horizon, thanks for your help.

For regular maintenance parts places like West Marine or Overton's will have stuff like oil and filters as well as stuff like replacement switches. You can also check with Marina's/boat dealers that are close to you for maintenance items you may need. For Four Winns specific parts I really don't know as these boats are really old by now and parts may no longer be available but usually you can find something aftermarket that will work. Hope that at least gives you some places to look.

Mine was smoking due to having been winterized. They fog the cylinders and carb with oil so when it is first started all this oil has to burn off. It cleared up after 5-10 minutes. Also the engine exhaust comes out through the center of the propeller so that is normal to see some smoke there.

I haven't had the pleasure of needing to replace mine yet so I have no idea how it comes out.
