So what's the advantage of small area games? Is it maneuverability in tight spaces?

By decreasing the space available, you increase the overall resistance that an individual encounters. You also make the feedback loop more immediate - mistakes don't take as long to develop. Every player is always involved in every play rather than just the one fast kid that can separate from the pack at an early age. That player will encounter more defensive pressure and the other kids will both feel and actually be more involved at all points. It increase the number of touches per person per session. Also, small area games refers to games that are modified to encourage certain behaviors - like requiring a certain number of passes to encourage playmaking or taking the puck behind the net after a turnover to create a breakout-like situation more often. You can also play around with the orientation of the playing surface and objects (nets, cones, etc) and designate certain roles to certain players - for example playing a half court style game with a designated "Gretzky" behind the net that the team must pass to after a turnover in order to encourage getting open for passes and use of vertical space down low. Finally they also allow the game to be the teacher - a skill isn't really a skill unless you can use it a game context. If you only ever pass in pre-arranged stationary passing lanes or according to a scripted drill, you won't be able to reliably perform that same motion in the highly variable context of a game. By learning and practicing more often in a game like situation, you are more likely to be able to use that skill in a "real" situation. (And, as a coach, they also allow effective ice utilization.)
