I can't believe it, I found out from your comment, every now and then I look for them to listen to them, I like the timbre of Mary Weiss' voice and that they talk and make comments in the middle of the song
Their vocal blend, their charisma and mastery of the stage, and Shadow Morton's visionary writing and production. Every year, this music just gets more compelling. Thanks for posting it 16 years ago!!
She's gorgeous for sure - but the whole group was amazing: two sets of sisters, one set being identical twins, all atractive and talented, how unique is that!?
"Dirty Fingernails, OH BOY !!! WHAT A PRIZE!!!" Some of the most unforgettable lyrics in Rock & Roll !! The Shangri-Las were the "bad girls," of the girl group era!!! I just love it!!! Thanks for the video!!!
This, the third of The Shangri-Las 11 hits, ws the follow-up to "Leader Of the Pack." Released around Christmas 1964, "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" peaked at #18 on Billboard's Hot 100 pop charts early in 1965. Lead singer Mary Weiss and her sister Betty were half the group; twins Mary Ann and Marge Ganser were the other half. Mary Ann died in 1971 of encephalitis and Marge in 1996 of breast cancer. Mary Ann and Betty sill live in the NYC area. They're lovely people; I've interviewed them.
@Robert Schnitzer - Betty was definitely the classic straight up beauty, but Mary was the cute one and her charisma and ability to act the songs she sang with such strength and conviction, plus that singularly perfect teen angst in her voice; Mary was destined to be leader of that particular pack. But hey, why choose? As a group, they were a knockout!
I LOVE THE SHANGRI-LAS!!!! These girls are the best! If I was alive back then I'd want to be their best friend, they are the definitive cool ass chick.
@Humboldt Bear Are you referring to the opening line, "When I say I'm in love...Luv? There was a song called Cat and Mouse that came out maybe 10 years ago, that borrowed that very same opening. 😊
This Shivaree clip is rare in that the Shangs had the whole team on the field that day--you don't often see all four of them. And Gene Weed was sure having fun, cattin' with those girls.
I, like many, have focused on Mary, mostly because the cameras did, but on this one and a couple of other shows with this song, I got to see the choreography they do at 0.30. It's really cool. A lot of work went into the dance steps they did for their act. They need to be in the Rock Hall of Fame next year!
I like Mary too! At least she and her sister Betty are still alive. I saw Mary perform around the 1980"s or 1990's @ the Madison Square Garden Paramount Theater, and she and her Group The Shangri-Las still sounds great! It was just Mary singing lead, with her daughter and one new member. But they still sound great! I'm glad that Mary is still alive and active. And I hope her sister, Betty is doing fine! RIP the Ganser twins, George "Shadow" Morton, Ellie Greenwich, etc. I miss you all! I hope Leiber & Stoller.from Redbird Records are still alive and well. Ellie, I'm sorry your marriage to Jeff Barry didn't last. I miss you all & Redbird Records in general! Between you all. you wrote some great songs that touched many people's lives. At least Carol king and Gerry Goffin although no longer married, are still alive. And I also miss Redbird Records! There were good things about the 1960"s and some bad. But the "Music" today is all a bunch of crap and trash, to put it politely. Is it any wonder I listen to radio stations, like WCBS-FM or Lite FM. I don't like hip hop or Rap "Music". Except for Groups like Boys-2-Men, New Edition, and Envogue, Debarge, Alica Keys, Sade (Remember them?!) Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, Cecilia Deon, if there are any talented performers out there other than those I previously mentioned, it's a secret to me! The groups and performers today would do well to watch these old videos. Not just to see what they have missed. but to gain inspiration from them!
This group were not big in England for some reason but their songs are good and Mary is as cute as they come. Also their songs get better as they mature. Only, 'Leader of the Pack,' was top ten here. But there are other tracks we missed out on here too.
On this day in 1965 {April 21st} the Shangri-Las performed "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Four months earlier on December 26th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #18 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... Between 1964 and 1966 the group had eleven Top 100 records, with them of them reaching the Top 10 and one peaking at #1 {"Leader of the Pack" for 1 week in 1964}... R.I.P. Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}...
Constantly reminded of how gorgeously sexy and professional these girls were. And how much fun it is to watch them perform! Thanks so much for sharing this video, Dazza B.
Love the bongos in this little jamette! The lead singer is so unaffected and cute. Brilliant pop from a long gone era, but your kids will jump around the living room to it anyway!
so I walk right up to him, give him a great big kiss...mmm-wah! .... ...possibly the best video on the planet... these girls really rock those rubber overalls....and the go go boots
I liked Mary Weiss, too! And her sister Betty and the two Ganser Sisters/twins. I'm only sorry the two Ganser sisters are deceased. But at least Mary is still alive and actively performing and I hope that she's doing fine! As I said, Iiked all the members!😀🙃😁
Great description here. I remember watching this episode. I was 6 years old. So into the music. I can remember having such a crush on Mary and thinking how tuff she looked. They were it. These chicks had the cool of cool. Later in my 20's I would go see Jimmy O'Neil on some shows he hosted. Shindig holds some fond memories and The Shangri-Las were it. Meet Shadow Morton too. He wrote their songs and more. Mary is so sexy singing it...thx 4 posting.
Mary's solo album was so good. It was great hearing her backed by a true rock and roll band. The arrangements on the Shangri-las songs were a bit too corny. Too bad Mary quit again soon after that album. It was successful. That was over 10 years ago. Her live shows were fantastic.
Great observation...apparently they were 'good bad but not evil' looking, right? They are still stand-out talent and as relevant today as way back then.
Betty did not perform regularly with the group until 1966 since she "preferred to avoid the rigors of touring". That's what it says on the Wikipedia site. Betty should have performed regularly with the group from the beginning because visually it looks better if she included in the performances since the two Weiss sisters look similar and twins also look similar to each other.
RIP Mary Weiss... and that's called sad
I can't believe it, I found out from your comment, every now and then I look for them to listen to them, I like the timbre of Mary Weiss' voice and that they talk and make comments in the middle of the song
Mary was simply " Adorable " XD

One of the best ever girl groups. My favourite of theirs is 'Remember, Walking in the Sand'
Forget Leader of the Pack or Walking in the Sand, This is the best Shangi-Las song.
R.I.P Mary Weiss 1948-2024
55 years later and I have such a crush on Mary Weiss.
She's gorgeous for sure - but the whole group was amazing: two sets of sisters, one set being identical twins, all atractive and talented, how unique is that!?
You're not alone, bro!
Me too and I am 73
@@buddymeyer6988 She's still around, so it's still not too late! 😊

Mary Ann Ganser died of a drug overdose.
Love the way Mary sounds.
Love the way Betty looks. oh yeah!
I am a millenial but I loved the sixties music like the music of the shangrillas
All these yrs my crush on Mary has smouldered on. So great to hear and See her. Their songs never went by unnoticed and enjoyed. God Bless em all.
I love Mary Weiss. Its hard to beleive she's almost 60 now. I saw her in 1964 in concert.
God, they were fantastic!
It's always so great to see them perform as a four piece.
No deep messages in these great songs, but they celebrated youth, young love and an innocence of an era we will never see again.
Original teenagelust an awakening, yet it had an innocence that doesn't exist today
The fabulous Shangri-Las!
Great
Love how Mary dances
Yeah! She's hot
Whoa I'm 16 again....love it!!!
Wow. Betty Weiss is really something.
I'm with you Paul DePace.
Yeah. Mary is so hot
Having listened and seen them here I think I prefer Betty over Mary. But, Mary is hot also!

Betty should have been a model. Check out the ET special they were on in the 80's. Betty was still a looker 20 years after this.
I LOVE THE SHANGRI-LAS!!!! These girls are the best! If I was alive back then I'd want to be their best friend, they are the definitive cool ass chick.
I remember the song well and still like it a lot.
"What color are his eyes? I don't know, he's always wearing shades." Awesome!
I like how the New York accent comes out when they ask Mary: "Is he a good dance-sa"? 😊

The Shangs & The Ronettes - the best !

they are probably whining about the tracking numbers in the upper right hand corner. (Like it is a big deal).
